You know, thinking about it, I kinda find it interesting that they almost had Mater attracted to a Porche, because Iāve had this theory for a bit that at some point long before the first movie, Mater might have had feelings for Sally, but she shot him down or he got over it or whatever. It just makes sense to me.
Oh man, I didnāt expect to like Holley that much, but now Iām as enamoured with her as I was with Sally when I watched the first movie! <3
Interesting observation on the Jaguar callback to the first movie, Netbug! Wiki listed her as a Jaguar XJR-15, although there has been many speculations on IMCDB, a movie car-identification website.
I personally thought she was a Scorpion HX awhile back. The truth is probably somewhere in between; sheās most likely an amalgation of a few models much like how Lightning and Mater are not really based on any real-life models.
Oh yeah, Mater and Holley. Really cute couple, they sort of remind me of Maxwell Smart and Agent 99. I really wished they had more scenes together, and even one or two quiet interludes like what Lightning and Sally had in the first movie. I can just imagineā¦ Holley, tears in her eyes, pleading with Mater not to risk his life as a secret agent, that such a good and honest tow-truck doesnāt deserve to die, even if itās to save the world, and he just looks at her tenderly and saysā¦ umā¦ heyā¦ I smell a great one-shot coming!

I got them from trailers, featurettes, and various clips Disney has shared with the internet. Itās amazing how much footage there really is available digging around Rotten Tomatoes/Fandango/Disneyās official Youtube accounts!
And yeah, I get the feeling sheās a sort-of-Jaguar but a Pixar original, like how Lightning is a sort of Chorvette-race-carā¦thing.
Also, speaking of couple comparisons, am I the only one who sees a bit of WALL-E and EVE in these two?
I mean
Materās a rusty old machine and has a job that is considered rather low on the totem pole. He is friendly, kinda clumsy, and very emotionally driven.
Holleyās a sleek new machine and has a special job that is highly classified. She is a bit uptight, intelligent, and a stickler for protocol/by the book (Thereās not much of her stickler/by the book in the film, but interviews/bios bring up a few times that she is fresh out of the academy and is used to simulated combat, and itās given some spotlight in the video gamesā¦ In a really cute way, I might note. Mater and Holley bickering! XD)
He is immediately smitten by her. She is not as impressed. He ends up getting sucked into her world.
I canāt be the only one who sees it! XD
Also also, Holley has quickly become one of my favorite characters too. Sheās adorable. I think she might be my favorite Cars character now, even.
Iām not the only one who thought of this! I definitely think way before Lightning came along, Mater had something for Sally but I think it was only a little crush that passed after time. I think Sallyās too nice to shoot him down, we never know, she probably did go on a ādateā with him just to make him happy.

And I totally agree on the Wall-E and Eve comparison! Now that I see it, itās so obvious! Although Holley isnāt my favorite Cars character and I do like Sally more, sheās definitely up there in my top five. It must be the accentā¦ shakes fist curse those British accents, they get me every time.

Actually, a fanfic writer speculated on this a few years ago - Fooled Around and Fell in Love. Itās one of my favourite fanfics simply for the opening chapter, which wouldāve been a complete one-shot in itself. Although I never got round to finishing it, this post reminded me that I should! Itās only 4 chapters, really.
I actually thought of touching on this conflict between Sallyās past with Mater and her present with Lightning in my Cars/24 crossover fanfic, which has been on indefinite hiatus for a few years (Yes, I actually thought of a spy fanfic before the sequel was announced!).
Thanks guys, Iām definitely going to try sit down and write this one-shot in the coming days. I actually have three in mind, all of scenes which I wish wouldāve been included in the movie, that wouldāve made the story so much stronger in lieu of all the confusing side-plots and unnecessary exposition.
I just got done with the first chapter, and I have to say, I love it so far. Had there not been another Cars movie, I actually pictured things going somewhat like that. Haha, everyone is so true to character and everything; itās fantastic!
You made so many good points in that post, TDIT.I actually did read this fanfic a while ago. I donāt think I ever finished it on account of me thinking it was too weird, but that was years ago. I think Iām going finish it this time, itās an awesome story. But me being the total Lightning and Sally canon shipper, I have some reserves about it. [spoil]Lightning cheating[/spoil], I can honestly see that happening (with him being a celebrity and all) but I just canāt see Sally and Mater in a total full-on relationship. I just think Mater had an innocent crush on her or thought she was really pretty or something, and she only liked him as a really good friend. By the way, a Cars/24 crossover fanfic? That has to be awesome! Are you going to continue it?
Ugh, donāt tell me this is one of those āCharacter A does something uncharacteristic to cause breakup with Character B so Characters B and C can be a coupleā things.
I canāt stand that starting point in a plot TBH. It always feels forced to me and feels like it is bashing whoever unlucky Character A turns out to be. Iāll still give it a chance and read it sometime, but I canāt promise Iāll appreciate it as much as you guys seem to have. 
I know,I hate thatā¦it dosenāt even make any senseā¦stories like that are only made to bash the original characterā¦ 
Netbug & CarsLuver: Well, I can only say that you should read that fanfic first to make an informed comment. But yeah, I can understand how some fanfic writers try to push their own OCs into a romantic relationship and break up canon pairings just for some fancy wish-fulfillment. I donāt like that sort of thing, because it feels gratuitous to me.
The only kinds of fan-pairings I appreciate are those whereby the relationship is unconfirmed (like Po and Tigress, or Marlin and Dory), or a fan-pairing of an OC with a single character (Like Pedro, or Nico, from Rio), or a breakup between two unofficial canon pairings (like Lightning and Sally). On that last point, at the end of Cars, there was a hint that they wanted to kiss, but it wasnāt fulfilled in an official sense, so everythingās still open-ended. Of course, now that the sequel has been released and we see [spoil]Lightning and Sally dating at the Wheel Well[/spoil], we can safely assume they are āgoing steadyā. But this fanfic was written before the second movie was released (and therefore takes place before the second movieās events), so it is entirely possible and even plausible.
See, Iām looking at it totally differently. I felt like they were a couple at the end of the first film whether they kissed or not. shrugs
Of course, Iām open to a well written fan-pairing fic either way, so that part doesnāt really affect my attitude towards such a story. Iām just not big on that plot I mentioned before.

Honestly, Iāve said this before, but I see Mater much like a friend who Sally protects dearly, but who is like a brother to her, not a boyfriend. Like Monique and Ed from Good Burger. Now, itās just an analogy. Cars is better than Good Burger. Donāt shoot. But Monique is into Dexter, and they date in the movie. However, Moā fiercely defends Ed from Dexterās conniving ways. The scene where, in Good Burger, [spoil]Moā approaches Dexter for ripping Ed off for money[/spoil] very much reminds me of when Sally, in Cars, asks Lightning if he meant what he said to Mater about āgetting a ride in one of them fancy helicopters.ā Case in point: Sally cares for Mater, and protects him from those who would take advantage of him, but isnāt in love with him. That is left to Holley. <3 Sally loves Lightning only, IMO.
I agree with TDIT. I, also, felt the same way about Lightning and Sallyās relationship having loose ties at the end of the first movie. Whether they kissed or not, it wouldnāt be automatically obvious that they were a couple. I mean, itās like people, isnāt it?
I am! And me not being a big MaterXHolley fan, I love it.
