Same here. I love the spy genre and, as I said weeks ago, when they mentioned the film would have a Hitchcockian feel, my excitement went off the charts.
And now, with Michael Caine on it, I can’t wait to see more.

Yeah. I seriously can’t wait for it to come out.
As well as Pooh and Kung Fu Panda 2…next year’s animated sequels are going to leave me broke. XD
(Has seen the trailer, not read all the comments).
My own reaction is mixed.
Shockingly I… quite liked Mater in it. (Odd since he kind of bugged me a lot in points in the first movie). I think that while it certainly will take away one of the charms of the first movie in a way (the small town set up) it could be seen as an addition or expansion of that idea through Mater- he’s a small town vehicle now having to deal with the big world and big world problems- almost the reverse of Lightening McQueen’s own story who had to be brought down to earth, Mater could be expanding his horizons.
(Maybe? I’m just guessing here. In my view you need to look at both the big picture as well as the little things in combination- maybe Mater finding the small things important could help in some way to whatever the ‘mission’ is… or something. In a team you need people to think of things from a variety of angles and ways and perhaps while he’s not always the smartest tow-truck on the parking lot he can offer this to the ‘spies’ or whatever.)
I’m still rather bamboozled by the fact that I quite liked what I saw of Mater in this, he seems more endearing than annoying in the trailer so I have high hopes in that area.
I’m still unsure of the whole spy set up as of yet (I’m not really sure what to think about it, it’s neither positive or negative yet- it could be AWFUL of course, it could very easily be awful, and it’s definitly not the most original set up- but then what is?) But it could work out okay. I’ll certainly give it a shot in theatres.
Plus, actually being able to see more of the world they’re in might mean I’m finally able to take that suspension of disbelief I found so hard to grasp in the first movie- to a degree at least.
Eh, could be fun.
Ooh, I never thought of it like that!
That’s one awesome interpretation. Most people (I don’t have that problem, personally) fear it will change the spirit of the original, but this explanation makes perfect sense. Thanks!
Thanks guys
I also think it’s possible Mater may become blinded by the ‘big lights’ of the city if you will in some respects- he might even forget what’s important or become to entrenched in perhaps how some of the spies think, but things will probably all work out in the end.
Though like I said- this is just my personal opinion- but you probably need both in almost all walks of life- the ability to see the big picture but also to care about the other things too that you would possibly over look otherwise. Sometimes both affect the other in a variety of ways anyway.
I’m kind of thinking from we’ve seen in the trailers it’s very likely that Lightening is NOT the main character. Instead he’s a very important character, the best friend, but the honour of being the main character has been passed on to Mater it seems. This is unusual for Pixar- at least in terms of Toy Story the main character was always Woody in some respects (he just edged ahead of Buzz I suppose you could say).
Making a different character the main character in a sequel is unusual, but hey I guess if they can make it work it’s fine.
Though I do wonder- if say Lightening could only take one person with him on this thing- why didn’t he take Sally? Why Mater?
There’s probably an invented reason in-universe. In terms of the writers desires its probably due to it having more of a chance to be humourous/ make Mater the main character.
Mater is McQueen’s new pit crew chief.
I personally think that Paul Newman can never be replaced. Plus the major reason why Blake Clark took over the role of Slink in TS3 was because Blake was best friends with Jim Varney, thus making the transition a lot easier for Pixar. They could always hire Corey Burton (who voiced doc in the video games) but I think it would be best if Doc Wouldn’t return. I just think Newman can be replaced like that.
Well, I read somewhere they found out Blake was friends with Varney after they cast him.
I’m glad they didn’t replace Paul. That’d just be wrong.
MG, I like your ideas about the plot. Personally, I want to see this movie, whether the given info looks good or not(it does so far.)
On the Sally instead of Mater thing, Mater is working with Lightning now, and business comes before pleasure.
I love your interpretation, mentalguru! As I’ve said in another thread, it’s like Rush Hour 1 and 2! Or maybe more closely, Crocodile Dundee 1 and 2.
It be pretty darn cool if mater took over as the main character we need something fresh for a cars movie mater being the new main character could be just what we need but if mater is not the main character im still sure the movie will be good.
I would have to disagree,Mater is just not main character material…
I found Dinoco in the the trailer.
Look at 0:47 and it’s just above Mater’s head. The japanese car is drinking it on the big screen.
Nice observent eyes you got!
Hey, good find.
When I see it, I’m going to try and keep a look-out for the Pizza Planet truck.
Well, I just read that the awesome [spoil]Jason Isaacs[/spoil] is the voice of the plane, so I’m happy.
This is giving me the same impression I’ve had from the start: Cars 2 is the mass-market kid-friendly toy-selling film that’s going to bankroll the next round of “brilliant but how do we sell this?” Ratatouille/Wall-E/Up films. It’s visually stunning, and should be fun, but if I were a rival animation studio with a potential Oscar contender (think “HTTYD”), this is the Pixar film I’d want to go up against. And, honestly, I hope they don’t try to make this too emotional/dark/challenging. I think the best way to make it “work” is to make it as big and insane (in a good way) as possible: racing! explosions! spies! wackiness! Make it a fun thrill ride and don’t worry if it’s not a life-altering experience.
Wow! I didn’t notice; thanks for posting this.
Karly05: I agree. That’s my problem with TS3. Way too serious.
After some initial , I’ve come to like the “seriousness” of TS3 - but I just can’t see that approach working for Cars.
Yeah, epecially with as lighthearted as the original was.
