Cars Race

No, not the kind of event where ‘the fastest car wins’. I mean ‘race’ as in ethnicity. I wondered about this aloud in the Discussion thread, and when I was toying around with my ‘24/Cars’ crossover and various fanfiction plotlines in development, this topic frequently pops to mind when I’m deciding my characters’ brand and model. I figured we could use a separate thread to discuss about the possibilities.

This is sort of a companion thread to the ‘Cars gender’ thread.

Do you reckon the cars in the Cars world have a concept of race or ethnicity? I mentioned before that Cars (and possibly Cars 2) is one of the more multicultural films of the Pixar canon. Which raises the question of how can you ‘tell’ a car’s race and nationality, especially when they don’t have distinguishing facial features or hair/skin tone like humans?

It might seem obvious at first to listen to his/her voice. Some, like Luigi, have regional accents or dialects that might reveal their origin. Ramone uses slang like “holmes” and “man”, which tells the audience he’s Latino.

You can also observe their behaviour and mannerisms. Flo shakes her body side-to-side and is very boisterous, reminscent of her background as a Motown showgirl. Strangely, although she is ‘coded’ as African-American, she is technically not an ‘African’ car so much as a car often used by African-Americans. Same with Ramone, who is not a "Mexican’ car per se, but a lowrider, commonly associated with Hispanic and Black culture.

A car’s appearance or paintwork could be another possible indicator. Wingo, who has Japanese characters on his side, always came off as Asian to me. Lightning has blue eyes, so unless he’s wearing contacts (which also raises another interesting question about car eyewear), he’s most likely Caucasian.

And of course, the biggest sign is their car models. Sally is presumably a Caucasian, probably Germanic in origin. The Miatas could possibly be Japanese-American fangirls.

These are just my observations and inferences. With Cars 2, we should have more clues as to whether this is a hard-and-fast concept that the creators have intrinsically and purposefully included, or whether it is more malleable.

This also raises more conundrums, as I mentioned in the other thread. What about captive or parallel imports? Would a Ford Falcon be an Australian or American (It is manufactured Down Under, but sold in the U.S.)? How about a Humvee (which is now owned by China)? The Toyota Corolla is the most common car brand in Singapore, but there’s no ‘Singaporean’-manufactured car. How would a Singaporean be represented in the Cars world? Would a trio of Holden, Vauxhall and Opel Astras be long-lost Australian, British, and American relatives respectively?

Carla, the Brazilian competitor in Cars 2, is representative of the design of Interlagos race cars in Brazil. But she is not innately a Brazilian car model (Pixar has yet to confirm her brand and marquee).

So far Pixar has been pretty consistent in its depiction of car culture, with some creative license (Oh wow, two puns in one sentence…). What are your opinions?

Wow! This is some deep in-sight! I like it though. I never thought of that but I get what you are asking. I agree with all the facts you have stated about the characters and their “race” or origin. It is really hard to tell, I think you mostly have to go based off the voice and certain features associated with them. Like if you watch Tokyo Mater have you ever noticed how much different those cars are? They are typically tiny and bright colours with more design and sorta anime style eyes. Well that’s just my opinion. Other ones are harder to tell apart like in the new movie if I was shown Holley I wouldn’t have a clue where she could be from. Great topic! :stuck_out_tongue:

I think we’re going to be getting a lot more details and insight about this topic with Cars 2 due to its international setting.

I don’t really think cars have a race based on color or features. They could easily change their colors or even their exterior much easier than humans can. However one thing I noticed is that in Tokyo Mater, the Japanese car Mater tows back has slanted eyes, so that could disprove my theory.

I think nationality is more important to them than race. That being what nation they come from. Like Luigi is an Italian and Carla is Brazilian.

Thanks, and welcome to the forums! Yeah, when I first saw her, I thought she was Asian from her car design, until I heard her Brit accent. :stuck_out_tongue:

I also noticed how the cars in Japan have anime eyes (or as EJE pointed out, slanted or almond-shaped ones like the old gentleman that Mater towed out of the desert in Tokyo Mater).

It also raises another question I’ve always wondered about. Are cars fixed in their models? As human beings, we can go for plastic surgery, tattoos, a little sunbathing or skin-whitening creams, and maybe even facial reconstruction (I believe they have now reached a point where you can transfer faces Face/Off style).

But we are still trapped within the bodies we are born with. Are cars in the Cars world capable of changing to different classes? Can a car born a hatchback wish to become a semi truck when it grows up?

I’ve always thought of it as all cars are born the same way (like a stock or factory model) according to their parents. ie A Mack and a Mercedes truck might have an offspring of unnamed model with a combination of its parents characteristics. Once it becomes an adult, it decides what model it wants to be within its class/type, much like how we choose our vocation or career after college. So it might decide to become a Freightliner, or maybe a Peterbilt.

Then you have to wonder; is there a caste system for cars? Is a vehicle born a delivery van doomed to become a van forever, or can it ‘become’ a sports car if it has enough money to buy the parts to transform itself into one? Or does it live with the shell of a Ford Transit forever? If it ‘trains’ hard enough, can it go as fast as maybe a mid-range sedan? Likewise, can a born supercar become as slow as a bus if it doesn’t keep itself fit? Was Lightning McQueen ‘lucky’ to be born a race-car, or did he become one, either through wealth or sheer perseverance?

I’m deviating a little here. Perhaps I should set up another thread to talk about car transformations. But obviously this sets up the possibility of a car not merely switching nationalities (much like how human beings go ‘native’ in their adopted countries), but also ethnicity. :stuck_out_tongue:

I think that’s an interesting idea. I like the idea of Cars choosing what they become when they’re older, the same way we choose careers (There is actually a book about humans being totally remodeled once they are of age but that’s another topic)

One piece of evidence against that argument is that Cars seem to evolve based on their age. Like Lizzie is a Model T, Doc is a car from the 50s and the younger Lightning appears to be in his 20s. It’s like Cars evolve or something.

As for the Japanese slanted/anime eyes, I noticed the new Cars character released from Japan (I think his name is ‘Shu’ ) Does not have slanted or anime eyes, but is clearly Japanese in his paint job.

I’m curious…it is obvious that cars CAN have offspring and I’m not gonna go into the details of asking HOW, but when they do, how does the child grow up? Like they obviously start out smaller than regular cars but how do they become adult sized? Do they like go in for body changes or something?

I always thought of it in terms of the theory posited by Blue Sky’s Robots. Rodney Copperbottom (the protagonist) grows up by changing into new parts (some of them hand-me-downs) every birthday until he is an adult.

So I suppose the cars have specific milestones where they go in for a tune-up and refitted bodywork. Then you have to wonder: Who does the refitting? Do they self-install? Do their parents do it for them? Does a doctor do it for them? Where do the parts come from?

:stuck_out_tongue:

I was kind of thinking about this yesterday, I think it’s very possible that racism could be a major theme of Cars 2. The World Grand Prix being essentially the Olympics of the cars world, uniting all of the cultures of the world, would be a great setting to take advantage of that. Plus, apparently [spoil]Grem and Acer were mocked for their car “race” throughout their lives, which led them to become evil.[/spoil] I think it would be a really interesting theme for Pixar to use, as they’ve never done anything like that before and it would definitely increase my interest in Cars 2.

Great idea, Bryko. It would indeed be very courageous and daring of Pixar if they attempted such a topic.

I’m wondering whether Dr. Z’s plans might be something along the lines of the Munich olympics - taking the contestants hostage and demanding something in exchange for their release.

The stakes will be high… will secret-agent-superspies Finn and Mater have what it takes to prevent a global catastrophe?

OK, that’s exactly what I was thinking too. About that movie and everything too! Anyways…as for saving the world…of course they will! It’s MATER!!!
