Central Cars 2 Discussion (Part 2)

Which… is somewhat unfortunate. Criticism is an important factor for any art form, and you can’t just turn your back and ignore it or fail to take it into consideration. Especially in this case, being a commercial art form that very much depends on the viewer’s opinions of it.

It’s the first film to to mostly bad reviews so he’s not used to it. I still hope he dosen’t expect much awards.

Well, Lasseter needs to learn that he just can’t make a film for just himself seeing how Cars was his personal film. Besides, I don’t know if that many people wanted a sequel to Cars. I enjoyed the first movie but I didn’t necessairly wanted a sequel.

I do think he is in a little bit of denial. We were all shocked when the film got bad reviews too.

I wasn’t too surprised with Cars 2’s bad reviews. I knew that judging by the commercials and trailers that it wasn’t going to be that good. Although I didn’t hate Cars 2, it’s just an average enjoyable movie.

Jonah: That’s basically my thoughts on it too.

I mean, I get his whole thing about making movies for the fans, not the critics, but they’re people too, watching the same movie nonetheless. You got to take what they say just as much as you take what other moviegoers say.

I agree with Jonah on that we were all suprised. Initial reviews were pretty good from what I remember, it just went downhill on release. I hope John realises the films errors and moves Pixar on. Even Walt Disney made some not-so-fantastic films.

Pixar has had mostly high expectations from the past, so anything in the ‘average’ pile would look awful. Personally though if this movie disappointed me, well, it wouldn’t in fact be the first time I was -personally- disappointed in a pixar film. (After all, I’m not a huge fan of Up beyond the heart wrenching first ten minutes, though it’s extremely popular and well praised in general).

In any case, I -may- be getting to finally watch this film for the first time (I was too busy to get to it when it was in theatres, it was either it or KFP2 and in the end KFP2 was so fantastic I stand by that choice for now). In any case I bought both KFP2 and Cars 2 on DVD. TECHNICALLY however I bought Cars 2 because my cousins two sons adore the heck of the first so it’s for them, especially for the elder of the pair. If however, they already are getting it as a present/have it, I guess then it will become mine and I’ll watch it for myself. (I texted my cousin and asked him and have yet to get a reply- but he is probably working anyway).

If it’s still a valid gift option I intend however to rent Cars 2 if I can for pretty soon anyway though!

I don’t know much people who wanted a Cars 2. I do know some who want an Incredibles 2. We were happy to see a Toy Story 3 because their wasen’t one in 11 years and people wanted to know where the toys went after Andy grew up. It prabably also involed nostalgia. Cars wasen’t old enough for nostalgia yet.

Well it depends on the person- and I just got a text from my cousin- looks like their mum got the dvd for them. So guess it’s mine now! Let’s break this sucker out!

In any case I hope they enjoy it. And I do. Obviously.

But in any case in general you have a point, I don’t think somehow the dvd sales for cars 2 will be fantastic- not everyone who saw it in theatres will buy it after all for any movie, but I think cars 2 will have even less than average in comparison to theatre figures.

Anyway, I’m going to go watch this now.

Tell us what you think please^^.

Interesting to know is that Cars 2 is the first Pixar film to miss the 200M mark domestically. It made about 190M here which is the highest out of any animated film this year.

I have written a horrifically long review on Cars 2 after seeing it: I am sorry if I bore you, I’ve split it up a little in spoiler boxes for ease of the reading experience. The third section is just incredibly random thoughts I had as I watched, it’s really the first two parts which take up the meat of the review.

I read your review and it was great! It pretty much summed up most of my thoughts for Cars 2. Still, it’s the first Pixar film that disappointed me.

What would a cae have if it has bad vision? I guess that thing Professor Z wore?

Really great review! I pretty much agree with everything you said, so great job with the review. I also don’t think it was too long.

Glad you liked it guys! And with regards vision, well, cars can get things fixed like windscreens- they could probably get something like glass contacts if they wanted and there was some problem there.

In the end though a monacle for a villian… it’s just a cliche. And not one I personally like outside of jokes. It’s fine if it’s a part of the JOKE (like it’s poked fun at, made out to be ridiculous and cliche as it really is even if it’s a cliche the writer likes themselves). But if you expect me to take it or the character 100% seriously as a threat then no. It lessens the intimidating impact they may have had to me. They’re a joke now, and you might as well roll with that joke then pretend they can be taken seriously at all (or lose the monacle entirely.)

It is a kids movie and it’s an odd gripe but it just seems kind of lazy and unimaginative otherwise. Which is ridiculous given the amount of detail and work animators put in elsewhere to recreate fanous cities in the Cars world- work that is something they certainly should be proud of.

I do understand where you’re coming from ^^.

Like I said before, I thought Cars 2 was very preachy. They could of easily got rid of the “Big Oil” message.

^ I was thrown off by that message too. Like you expect it to turn out as “let’s promote alternative energy!” but instead it comes off as “don’t pursue alternative/enviromentally friendly things, you’ll only make a hassle for yourself, just stick with the normal and continue on with life.” I like to leave the theatre with some morals and such to consider, not the glaringly obvious kind but things to keep in mind. I got those feelings from Cars, but Cars 2 left me wondering. “Always be yourself” seems like a lame moral to draw from Cars 2, not that it is a bad moral, but it could have been presented much better. o_0
