WHAT? How did toy story 3 disappoint you?
Really? I was the same way to! When I was younger I loved the movies. When I was in middle school I stopped liking them because I had that “hand drawn is the only true animation” nonsense in my mind.
Eventually I grew older and realized, as John Lasseter says, it’s not the way it’s animated, but Story is King. ![]()
Chill down, mate, it’s nothing to be shocked about.
You can read my posts throughout the forum (like the ‘Your Toy Story 3 Reviews’, ‘Academy Awards 2011’ and ‘Toy Story 3 for Best Picture’ threads), but in a nutshell, I thought the soundtrack was unremarkable (in comparison to other films like HTTYD and LOTG), the ending was melodramatic, and the plot was a repeat of Toy Story 2, but with a different antagonist.
It is still one of Pixar’s best, but when viewed in light of more high-adventure fare like Wall-E and Up, it was sort of underwhelming to me personally.
Yeah, that’s why I respect Hawaiian Shirt Man (The nickname I have for Mr Lasseter in my head). There’ll always be a place for hand-drawn animation in my heart that computer-animation can’t quite replace, but I’ve accepted that it is not the medium in which you tell the story that matters, but that you tell the story with your heart.
Anyway, I’m sure I’ve missed out on a lot of Cars updates by now, but hopefully that means I’ll have spoiled myself less! ![]()
Personally I believe the plot for Cars 2 is a little risky, it seems to come off a little too flashy for me. However, I’m sure Pixar will pull it off
If you would like to read the full article about my thoughts on Cars 2, as well as the plot here’s the link: http://thedreamofpixar.wordpress.com/2011/02/26/cars-2-plot-too-flashy/
I love your nickname for him, and your avatar
. Both mediums are great. The Nightmare Before Christmas wouldn’t be the same if it was traditionally animated. The Princess and the Frog wouldn’t be the same CG, and WALL-E wouldn’t be the same if it was stop-motion animated. They’re all great methods, it would be a shame to get rid of all of them!
Yeah, great avatar. But I thought profanity wasn’t allowed on the forums ![]()
Cars represents fully what Pixar can do. Toy Story, Finding Nemo, and all the others are nice, but they are set in our world, either partly or wholly. Wall-E is set in the future but is still our world.
Cars is another universe altogether. Sure, it’s based on our world, but Pixar has to figure out what Cars can do that resembles what humans do and what they can’t.
I think it is safe to say that there is no limitation to what Pixar can do with this. Our first evidence of this was when they show that the cars watch the same Pixar movies that we watch, only with cars playing the characters we know. And now we know that cars in the Pixar world have to use the facilities from time to time. We also knew that they sleep in giant road cones.
Incidentally, I wonder what Pixar cars would think of our world. However, Pixar has done a great job of keeping that from happening. Please, any Pixar execs who might be reading this post, DO NOT USE THIS AS AN IDEA FOR CARS 3. It would be a bad movie if you did.
Well, no it wouldn’t be a bad movie. But the Cars world is for Pixar what Harry Potter is for J.K. Rowling. Though they can write and produce other franchises well enough…it is through those that they show their full creative potential.
In fact, I think Cars is the only Pixar movie currently out that can have a multitude of sequels without any of them sucking. I mean, a Cars 6 and a Cars 7 could still be entertaining.
Oh God no, I thought Cars 2 is a little too far-fetched, let alone a Cars 6. There’s a very very fine line between creating a new universe and parodying the existing one (in a lame way). I thought the first Cars was doing great in terms of opening the possibilities in this new universe, but when it comes to the credit (i.e. other Pixar movies in Cars world), it just shows how easy it is to get bored of seeing things in parody.
That’s what I’m worried about in Cars 2, because I certainly didn’t feel entertained by the different parodied worlds created in Cars Toon - Mater’s Tales.
I was searching cars 2, and came along a movie critic who has been able to see an early screening cut of cars 2, and did a review of it. from what she says, it seems that most of the original characters in the first cars are hardly in it.
Thanks Endrizzi but please try to keep it in one post in the future. ![]()
Professor Z is quite an interesting character
Well, we still don’t know his plan.
I can already tell that I’ll like Tomber!
I’m glad we don’t know his plan. I’m so glad they aren’t drowning us in Cars 2 stuff like they did with Toy Story 3. That was so obnoxious.
It was hard to keep up with too.
Awesome! It’s a longer version of the TV spot. I still can’t get over how good the first scene looks!
It looks like the real footage of the ocean, not animated. Pixar = animation Gods.
So I guess if history is anything to go by, this is it for trailers, they’re not gonna release anymore until the movie comes out. I’m pretty torn between feeling disappointed about the supposed lack of any character development in the movie (which is something Pixar is REALLY REALLY good at), and feeling so pumped for all the roller-coaster rides in this spy genre. Pixar knows how to sketch an adventure, they really do.
Roll on June 24!
Now I understand Bryko’s recent Tweets… ![]()
Well, I’m somewhat disappointed that they’re still showing scenes from Tokyo, although there were a couple of glimpses of the new locales towards the end of the trailer.
I really, really love the opening. The music reminds me of The Vantage Point theme. Pixar really had the spy-atmosphere going there.
And then it went downhill from there. There’s sort of an unwritten rule for trailer editing that you shouldn’t use more than three songs (because a trailer is like a mini-movie, it has three acts). They kept piling on the song changes and tagline cards that I found it hard to keep track of the ‘throughline’, the theme. Is it Mater and Lightning going around the world? Is it about Professor Z’s plot to take over the world? Who am I supposed to be rooting for? What’s the essence of the movie, the takeaway message?
It’s all over the place, and sorry to the fans, but I think it’s one of Pixar’s worst trailers. Note that I said trailer, and not movie. I can’t judge the movie. I haven’t seen it.
I did love Flynn’s parting quote, though:
“Friendships can be difficult in our line of work, Mater.”
Well, here we have these wonderful posters:
