Like I said CarsLuver, Pixar was more dignified with its marketing campaigns before Toy Story 3. The constant updates by way of character turntables might excite the die-hard fans, but it comes off as poor form to me when every other studio does this more subtly and professionally.
Again, KFP2 is posting its updates on Facebook, the DWAnimation Twitter page, and on its official Youtube channel. It doesn’t push all its secondary videos onto Apple Trailer, instead keeping only its teaser, superbowl spot, and first trailer there. What Pixar is doing is its ‘bumping’ its thread by sending out its turntable videos to various film criticism and movie sites to garner more publicity and attention. If I’m mistaken in my ‘media release’ theory, that still doesn’t discount the fact that they churn a new character turntable every few days for the sites to pick up on and post on their pages.
Although this is expressly the sole purpose of marketing, this is very uncharacteristic of a studio which puts its trust and confidence in its final product, instead of flogging it to death every week. That should be left to the fans like you and me, who will plug it for them anyway.
What Pixar could’ve done is leave three videos on Apple Trailer, run its ChromeLeaks viral campaign (which I think is very clever), and post any secondary footage such as the multitude of turntable videos on its Youtube channel only. And even then, they shouldn’t release more than say, ten, because chances are, hardly half of these characters will have anything more than a few minutes of cameo before they make way for other sideline characters.
Finding Nemo didn’t plug every single minor character in its marketing campaign, as did The Incredibles. And they had huge lists of extras. So I’m struggling to comprehend why Pixar is revealing its entire cast prematurely at the expense of good taste. I know I can always avoid watching the turntable videos or ignore this campaign altogether, but I think it deserves some valid criticism from a well-meaning fan.
