I just got back from this. I have to say, it was just plain fantastic and very Pixar quality and I can’t imagine any fans of the studio not liking it. There’s just so much to love here.
I’ll make it clear that I loved both Cars 2 and Brave. Pixar has never really disappointed me. But I came away from both wondering when the next time I’d come from a Pixar movie getting that thrill my favorite works of theirs gave me. This was that next time!
All the new characters were fantastic, I warmed up to them immediately. The team dynamic going on with Oozma Kappa was a ton of fun. And needless to say, the animation/rendering were top-notch—and contrasting it with MI, really shows how far along the studio’s come. The color palette had a really nostalgic feeling to it and the location design was incredibly scenic.
At least for the most part, it moved along at a solid pace. Maybe there’s more of certain parts I’d have liked to have seen, but I’m overall very satisfied. Not to mention it took some twists I was not expecting as it reached its climax. [spoil]From Sulley cheating to the whole scene of them in the human world, trying to scare away the human cops… I was on the edge of my seat. Just bravo to the whole ending.[/spoil] And on top of that, it perfectly segued itself into MI!
[spoil]Maybe my only vague disappointment was that we couldn’t see more of how Randall turned against Mike and Sulley, or rather, at what point he decided he didn’t want to be a part of them given how pivotal of an antagonist he became in MI. Still, the early scenes with him as an almost completely different character were really charming, helping Mike study.[/spoil]
Oh and [spoil]Waternoose’s cameo at the end!! And Roz!![/spoil] All the nods the sequel were great. They got big laughs out of everyone in the theater.
I know a lot of people think it wasn’t very necessary to make a prequel to MI in the first place, but going by that logic, there wasn’t much of a need to do the Toy Story sequels then either. Both Monsters Inc. and Toy Story have, in my opinion, the most creative and uniquely “Pixar” universes to them, and that’s why the Toy Story sequels are so great—they build up on that amazing universe, while keeping the characters strong and introducing new ones. Even if MU was almost at disadvantage for being a prequel because we would have to undo progress, I’ve gotta say, it accomplishes everything a prequel should. It developed the lead characters fantastically and makes their sense of purpose in the sequel even stronger than it already was.
This movie, I feel, deeply rekindled my passion for Pixar and reminded me of just how brilliantly fun their work is. I’m really happy with it. Definitely see it!!
