I’m annoyed that I have to wait until next month for it to come out here, hopefully it’ll be worth the wait.
I’ve been keeping a weary eye on the Tomatometer score, and now it’s up to 79%! rottentomatoes.com/m/monsters_university/
I hope it continues to rise.
One thing I’m noticing, at least amongst summaries for the negative reviews, is that many seem discontent with the premise of the movie entirely in the form of “it didn’t really need to exist”. And of course I don’t think the movie was absolutely necessary to be made considering what a complete movie the original was, but the fact that that’s where a lot of critics are drawing their criticism from puts more of my worries at rest.
^ dont worry about it…im sure itll be in the mid 80s. anyways who cares what the critics think. all the negative reviews are basically the same.
up to 83% now, sit back and relax, popcorn anyone?
Seeing the advanced screening tonight!
heheh, and it’s gone up a percent since then
I’m not worried anymore.
Just got back from seeing it a 2nd time earlier tonight… laughed just as hard lol.BD Definitely appreciated the animation and rendering that much more. The Blue Umbrella was amazingly beautiful as well!
Saw this unexpectedly today! I’m seeing it again tomorrow with my parents.
So, I think it’s cute, and surprisingly more emotional and less of a comedy than I thought it would be, but that’s fine. Overall, I like it. I think it’s good, [spoil]on par with Toy Story 3 for me. (I think I like Monsters, Inc. better, though. ) but I really need a second viewing to confirm my opinion on that.[/spoil] It’s worth watching, I know people will love it.
Well, I’m afraid I gotta wait another month ‘til it hits cinemas here, and Hulu’s constant commercials about it aren’t helping much either. (Okay, yes, they are relevant to my interests, thank you, but it seems pretty cruel. :c …Oh well, I can’t blame them.) I’d watch it online, but bad quality. Also I wanna see it in Dutch, because I’m like 99% sure it’ll have the same voice actors from the original Dutch Monsters, Inc. Maybe I can even watch it in the same cinema I watched the original, many years ago, haa. I’m probably gonna cry again. :’)
But ONE MORE MONTH ARGH.
Why do you hate the Netherlands so much, Disney. It’s bad enough we don’t even have your wonderful stores over here. ;_;
I am so jealous of you people who got to see it last night. If only I lived in a big city.
But, i’m not jwealous anymore, because today I get to see it! Woohoo!!!
I live in a college town in Virginia, not even a big city by any means, but to my surprise, the local theatre sneaked 1 early show on Thursday. I just got off a plane from a business trip, and my wife dragged me to the theatre right away. I think this is the most fun I had at a Pixar showing since WALL-E. MU is just incredibly funny and thoughtful, I don’t even understand why it got some backlash as it did.
I’m so excited hearing your guys’ opinions! I don’t get to see it today, but I might in the next few days which only builds my anticipation more.
I saw it last night at a midnight premiere; and honestly, I hate to say this is the first time I’ve ever seen a Pixar film walking away with apathy…
I just feel like Pixar is going deeper into this hole of generic animation that really does not stand out from what other studios would do. Pixar movies tend to have a moment or two somewhere in its plot that surprises me - plots that take unexpected turns to the better - Monsters University took no risks whatsoever. Everything that was expected is what happened, and that’s part why it’s not leaving me a lasting impression, I guess. I really hope the next original Pixar films will have redeemable qualities for what makes Pixar better than the rest.
The Blue Umbrella, was pretty dang cool, though.
ya but with prequels you dont really wanna take big risks.
Just got back from seeing it! My opinion could change the next time I see it, but for now I think it’s fantastic!
This movie made me so emotional and warm and fuzzy inside.
Disney did a nice job tricking us with the trailers into thinking that Mike and Sully were roommates from the get go. When I saw Randal I actually clawed backwards in the chair like “NOPE NOPE NOPE.” XD
Mike… Mike’s entire arc. I originally went to college as an animation major and supremely blew it. I’d been so sure going in and left feeling too tired to want to dream again, just like Mike did. Realizing he wasn’t who he thought he was and realizing that was okay and that there was more than one way to skin a cat than he’d thought… It makes me want to get back up and try harder.
It was extremely refreshing in a world that seems to take college as a given and pressures kids from middle school for SAT exams to see a film that said “College is not the only way to be somebody in life.” IMO, University has one of the most important messages in the history of the Pixar franchise.
Is there some sort of prequel rule book out there that inclines they should be safe and stray away from taking risks? If we’re agreeing that Monsters University was a safe effort from Pixar because it is a prequel, then yes that’s why it bugs some people.
A sad bias I see from a common usual Pixar fan is when they debunk critics for downplaying a Pixar feature without actually taking into consideration what a lot of them have to say. Is Monsters University safe, and is that why some people are downgrading it? Should that be an issue? Well I leave a Pixar fanboy, such as myself, the question: did we grow up falling in love with the studio based off of Monsters University and Cars 2, or did we fall in love with them based off of the amazing movies they made before it? I think we have every right to be true to our guts and admit that Pixar has been a slouch lately, but I can only bet a lot of us just have a hard time admitting it because it’s Pixar and we can’t accept our precious doing any wrong. I just hope the next string of Pixar originals will bring the studio back to form.
But what if that’s not what my gut is saying? I personally liked Cars 2 even though it wasn’t as emotionally heavy as other Pixar films, and I really like MU because it hits close to home and is really sweet.
I think the problem is actually the opposite of people being more lenient because it’s Pixar. People tend to be way more harsh on Pixar than any other animation studio.
well, in my opinion, the fact that this is a prequel is OK with me that pixar didnt do anything to big and played it safe. all that big stuff is saved for its predecessor. Thats how you have to look at it. If this had been a sequel then yes I would be hoping they’d take risks…
I saw this a second time and I have a correction to make. I love it! It’s really good, possibly as good as the first. If the first one is better, it’s only by a tad. I understood the jokes better and was generally very funny. Maybe it’s because my whole family was there this time, but regardless, I loved it.
