Whoa! Sorry for ruffling any feathers here. I think I ought to clarify; I’m not against films that make people think, those are good too. I admit though that my favorite movies are lighthearted and make me laugh at least once if not more, but I still admire movies that simply make a point, whether it makes you smile or makes you think. I’m not downgrading the heart in Pixar’s films, just they make you think in very different ways and have different ways of saying it. I was thinking mostly how, when Brave came out, it was #1 in the American box office. By the next week though, it was knocked down to #3 by Ted and Magic Mike, both adult movies (and I don’t enjoy those kinds of films whatsoever). Of course, I realize that those probably weren’t tops with critics either that I know of. I mean, fact is, I don’t read a lot of reviews; my “reviews” on Pixar film are pretty much entirely me spazzing over how awesome they are. I’m not a critical person, so it does bug me that some of Pixar’s films haven’t been getting the credit they deserve. But partly that’s because I’m biased and I don’t see the flaws that critics often see. And some criticism is just people being in-your-face or just to be “different” (don’t worry, I’m not thinking of anyone here) I know this all sounds insanely scattered, but that’s more of what I meant. Hope I made that clear…
I think that’s perfectly fine. That’s basically how I understood it from you the first time. I mostly stick to animated films as well, and I do like live-action films like Star Wars. Just not ones that are, like you said, “adult” as in “edgy” and that kind of crude humor. I don’t like movies like that either despite people in my life who tried to get me to watch them for fun (and I have seen a few films/shows, not completely with bad things but still overall not very good, partly indecent content for me. I was not happy with myself for giving in like that and I haven’t done it since). That’s probably why I like animated movies most of the time, because I can stay away from that overly adult stuff.
By the way, I don’t disagree with anything you said and I really see where you’re coming from ObsessedWithPixar. I’m pretty much the same way, for sure since the beginning of this year, but I don’t think you upset anyone and I think everyone understands now.
Don’t worry. I never felt offended.
I’m used to disagree about film without getting unnerved. I teach about it at university and as you might guess, discussions ensue frequently, but it’s all very polite and nobody feels offended. I sure it was that way here
Anybody has listened to track previews of the score?
^Ok, good to know guys. I’m glad we’re all on the same page here. OWP resumes counting the minutes until MU comes out next week
just downloaded the soundtrack. nothing really to big. a decent, jazzy soundtrack by randy newman. he uses a lot of themes/cues from the original monsters inc soundtrack and puts them together, like what he did with the toy story 3 soundtrack. im excited for this movie!
Well, yes, that’s the kind of thing I was expecting.
I hope to get it soon.
Oh, thanks!
But don’t worry, I just found out that we’ll get it this afternoon. Can’t wait to listen to it!
Do they still sell the new Pixar CDs for retail? I know Up and Toy Story 3 were digital downloads or something, but I have not been able to find the Brave CD. Will that or Monsters University be sold in stores?
I think this time it will.
Anyway, we received it today. I for one think I haven’t warmed to it yet.
There were very few passages from the original film, just about five that I can remember right now. I suppose most of the reprises aren’t in the commercial soundtrack, though, just like Toy Story 3 featured mostly the original material.
In all, possibly among the weakest Newman efforts, but my opinion might change after listening to it again (which I won’t until after the film’s release, because knowing the score always spoils me something from the film).
LQ, I’m pretty sure that the last two soundtracks for Brave and Cars 2 are CDs. And even so, there are a couple of legit physical copies of Up and TS3 (they were issued to very few and aren’t that cheap). I myself hope that MU will have a physical soundtrack… call me old-fashioned, but I prefer my soundtracks on CDs, so they don’t mix in with my normal iTunes stuff.
I only have soundtracks, so I don’t have anything to mix them with! CDs are great, but they take too much physical space.
And you are right, Cars 2 and Brave both had physical releases also.
I’m really anxious about this film all of a sudden. I was formerly just excited but now I’m a bit worried. Although I do disagree with reviewers often, checking on the Tomatometer and seeing 14 positives stacked against 5 negatives reminds me all too much of what happened last year with Brave and the year before with Cars 2. Although I ended up enjoying both films, I still want to see this movie prove Pixar can excel at their craft again, but the negative reviews are saying everything I feared…
Don’t get obsessed too much on them. The film comes out on Friday and I’m sure they’ll be a ton more reviews by them, mostly positive hopefully.
It’s so annoying how Pixar’s past achievements are now working against them when it comes to reviews. And I don’t understand rottentomatoes. There are reviews that have a negative tone to them, but they end up getting a red tomatoe, and reviews with an overall positive tone ends up with a green splat next to it. I just checked out Despicable Me 2, and in the reviews it says that although not a original or charming as the original…blah blah something positive, and it gets a solid tomatoe. It’s at 100% right now. I’ve seen similar things about MU, and its a green tomatoe. I don’t get it.
Being successful is very ungrateful (specially when you’re borderline perfect, as Pixar used to be for so long). Everybody expects you to come with exactly the same perfection every time, which of course can’t happen forever.
Anyway, I think they’ll rise again and that this film is a small step towards that.
My review. pixarplanet.com/blog/review-mons … e-umbrella
As long as you don’t go in expecting a heartbreaking masterpiece, you’ll definitely find something to like in this movie. The emotions are there, but they’re more subdued than usual for Pixar. It’s mainly a comedy, and thankfully most of the jokes clicked for me. I like it better than the first film in a lot of respects, but it doesn’t have quite the same originality and emotional spark. Still a really fun movie though!
And I can’t get the music from The Blue Umbrella out of my head.
I’ve always preferred listening to what the cast & crew have to say about the movie. I’ve never once heard anyone on the cast & crew say Monsters U is an absolute masterpiece that will bring you to tears. I’ve mainly just heard them talk about how it’s funny and entertaining and enjoyable, so that’s what I’ll be expecting.
Just thinking about the premise, I wasn’t really expecting a tearjerker to begin with… if people’s complaints stem from it not being the most creative Pixar film or the most emotional then I’ll probably still dig it.
Well, considering that I’ve cried at every Pixar film one way or another and called each one a masterpiece, I have a good feeling about MU. I definitely see it as being a lighthearted film more so than a bring-you-to-your-knees tearjerker, as say, compared to the dramatic and emotional plotline of Brave, (not saying that Brave doesn’t still make me smile) but that’s OK; Pixar excels at both making audiences laugh and cry and I’m still extremely excited. Now, if I can hurry up and get over this head cold before opening weekend, everything will be perfect!
