Character Study: Syndrome vs. Sylar (from "Heroes"

I’ve just recently become a fan of NBC’s new series

Heroes, and I can’t help but think of some uncanny resemblences between these two

villians. Both share the common interest of the idea of becoming super, one through technology, the other from

the very slight amount of ability that he has to “see how things work.” Both have thrived on rejection

to get where they want to be. Both seem to use their powers for personal gain. Both have essentially destroyed

those with supernatural abilities. And lastly, both take on a psudonymn that begins with “S”. The only

real difference between the two is that Syndrome’s “personal gain” would’ve been respect and

attention, whereas Sylar’s “personal gain” is to collect the abilities for himself.

Any

thoughts?

Oh! Me likes this thread! This is like a comparison of

my favorite movie AND favorite TV show!

I shall reserve comment for the moment to hear other opinions but

meanwhile rest assured that I’m formulating my own thoughts on the matter! =)

I have never seen the Show

Heroes, but I fins it intresting how someone like Syndrome could be very, very

similar to a character in a real TV series.

Sylar, I think is perhaps more rooted in evil than

Syndrome is. Syndrome’s a bit more comical whereas Sylar is plain, old, “kill the prey” type

deal.

side note- 10th Wonder podcast is the best Heroes podcast out there.
(also, there’s online

streaming video of full Heroes episodes on NMC’s site, as well as an interactive graphic novel that supplements

the story line(s) of the TV series.)

Syndrome’s kinda like that. It’s just that when he

kills peoples, he likes to amuse himself with it. That’s why he releases the Omnidroid to WTFpwn them.

Anything’s more fun with giant robots.

I don’t watch Heroes, so I have no comparison.

gburc58209: hey, that is okay. Don’t worry about i. I seen a little, but I too am kinda clueless about heroes. But also, welcome to Pixar PLanet!

I watched the first few episodes of the show Heroes. I did not try comparing it with The Incredibles though.
And welcome to Pixar Planet, gburc58209. You may have seen me on IMDb Cars forums. (But I am not there very often)

LOLOL!!! 8D That’s so right! Anything’s more fun with giant robots! 8D

Also, come to think of it, Bowler Hat Guy’s character arc in Meet the Robinsons is exactly the same as Syndrome’s except leading to almost Bizzaro World results.
Both turned to villainy as a result of childhood trauma they blamed on friends/heroes, though Buddy used that festering and boiling hatred to his advantage to create weapons, gain wealth, and kill supers while Goob just went pathetically emo while living his life in a condemned orphanage.
Then there’s the Omnidroid and Doris. Both multilegged robots with a single glowing eye, and an AI leading them to attack their very creator/pathetic ally and in Doris’ case, conquer the world.
I could go on and on about this, even bringing some stuff from the MTR game, but I’m too lazy too for now.

Well, the Walt Disney Company is all out of imagination except for the new John Lasseter, the director of MTR. Before John Lasseter came over, they were stealing other people’s ideas all the time, and I don’t think that John Lasseter would steal Pixar’s ideas. It’s confusing. Maybe it’s just a coincidence?

John Lasseter didn’t direct MTR, only exec produced it in the middle of things. Steve Anderson (who also voiced BHG) directed the movie. It probably is coincidence, but at the same time, there’s a few other small Incredibles/MTR similarities that make me surprised that there’s been no fandom attempt to create a crossover.
