Do you celebrate Christmas?
Not in the strictest sense, since none of my family members are Christians. We used to when my siblings and I were kids, my dad would play Christmas jingles in our car and we would set up a Christmas tree, send greeting cards and hampers to friends, stuff like that. I have never eaten a traditional Christmas meal or remember receiving Christmas gifts (although I may have when I was little, I’m not sure). Nowadays, we send out e-mails at most to our friends and go somewhere nice for a family outing on Christmas.
What do you like and dislike Christmas?
I love the decorations along Orchard Road (Singapore’s main shopping district) and the various Christmas book, movies and song tie-ins. The general atmosphere of celebration and good cheer. The things I dislike are the crowds, and the commercialization of what once used to be a festival about the spirit of goodwill and peace. There are many forms of “giving” that does not have to involve material presents. It could be time spent with loved ones, or a kind greeting to a stranger. Why leave it to one day of the year to be nice to everyone?
Favourite Christmas foods?
I don’t eat much Christmas food, but I like turkey, cookies, chocolate, and pudding anytime of the year. I dislike candy canes and eggnog, though. Yule log sounds good though.
And fav Christmas activities?
Taking pictures with my family along Orchard Road. Visiting long-lost friends in Malaysia and Singapore. Shopping and getting Christmas discounts. Watching Christmas movies and shows on TV.
How will you celebrate Christmas this year?
I don’t know what my family has planned… maybe we’ll go out and do something fun like watch a movie or go sightseeing or something. Or we could just stay at home and laze around. Depends, they’re kinda laissez-faire about it.
What are your fav Christmas carols/songs?
Let it Snow (end credits of Die Hard)
I’m dreaming of a white christmas (the lazy drawl is hynotic)
Rudolf the Red-nosed reindeer (for the good moral message)
And your fav Christmas movies?
Die Hard
Nightmare Before Christmas
Joyeaux Noel
My parents don’t believe in giving gifts for Christmas since “we don’t celebrate it” and to save the money,
so I may not receive this in the near future, but anyway, I hope to get:
Any one Wall-E related merchandise (I saw a $10 poster and a mousepad of indeterminate value at a film merch store)
The most they’ll do is give us a few bucks to spend on pirated DVDs or games in those shady illegal stores in Penang, so I guess that’s my Xmas gift then… in that case I think I’ll be getting Fallout 3 and a racing title… pretty pathetic, but hey, they’re my old folks, you gotta appreciate the kind gesture.
