*~Class of 2009~*

How many on this site are going to be graduating this year?? I know I am!!

We can get together here and talk about our after-school plans and fun things we’ll do before the year is over. And if there is already another page like this, hopefully a mod can direct me there. :stuck_out_tongue:

I happen to be graduating at 16, so I’m not moving out or going to college or any of that right after I get out of school (I’m homeschooled). I really don’t want to go to college as of now, but I have plenty of time to think over that. In the meantime, I’m going to get a job this summer before/after my birthday and save up money to buy a MacBook (and BlackBerry)- I’ll be starting video editing and DVD burning for people in my area. Once I have the money all saved up, I’ll also purchase Photoshop, because I am a huge fan of computer graphics and photo editing.

My parents are letting me “take advantage” of them after I get done school, meaning I can stay here at home as long as I need until I want to get my own place. (I can’t imagine that day… it’s going to be soooo sad!!! ) In that time I’ll be able to save up my money and such.

Downfall about graduating early: I don’t know anyone in the public school who is graduating this year, so I’m not going to “march with my class” or anything, which is actually kind of sad for me to think about. :frowning: but its okay. My parents will get me a tassle from the school and a diploma and all that… it’s going to be pretty sweet.

I’d like to hear what you guys are planning to do. Let’s make this our best year yet!

Homeschooled… Cool! Hope you have a great graduation year. Being 16, you will lots of time to explore what you want to do before even thinking about if you would want to go to college or university eventually - (and if you do, for what).

Anyway, have fun with your writing and video editing in the coming year.

I guess I am, though ‘graduation’ might be defined a little differently over here. I graduated from High School two years ago this summer, and have been at Sixth Form (where you get the qualifications needed to go to university) since. I’m graduating from Sixth Form this summer, but still continuing to do an extra qualification or two, so that when I apply to university this September/October, I’ll be a strong applicant.

Most of my friends, on the other hand, will actually be attending university this September, so I’m sort of a year late because of my ‘gap year’. When I do attend university, it will be for three years starting September 2010, and I’ll hopefully be studying Experimental Psychology at Oxford (if my exams go well, but we’ll see). And then after that comes official graduation, i.e. the whole tassle and diploma thing, though by that time, I’ll probably be about 21 or 22 years old.

Kind of blabbered on there, sorry about that. It’s when you’re in the midst of exams that you try and think of the future the most, since that’s what you’re aiming for, I guess.

red- Sounds like you’ve got a good year planned out! And congratulations on graduating this year. And graduating early is sort of a good thing in a way-it means that you’ll have even more time to think about what you do want to do.

Yes, I am also happy that I have lots of time to think about college and stuff. I’ve personally never really wanted to go to college, but if I decide to get big-time into the video editing, I might want to take it a little farther, and a college would help me to do that. But before I throw my little young self into this crazy world, I have plenty of time to adapt to living and working in it when I get a job. (I’m not “sheltered” from the world… don’t get me wrong. I hate the stereotype many people put on “homeschooled kids”. )

Being homeschooled was a huge blessing for me. I’ve never been to public school once in my life, and maybe that’s a good thing because knowing me, I might have gotten totally wrapped up in all the weird stuff that happens in the public schools… :unamused:

lizardgirl: I am so excited for you! Oxford is a big-name college, and it takes real work to get in. I’m proud of you for applying yourself, and I would also love to be a psychologist as well… I LOVED learning psychology this year!!

The reason why I can graduate early is because last year, I decided to work on a whole bunch of “Extra credits” (like civics, state of Maine study, drivers ed, etc… and my civics book was basically American History - which is required to graduate - but I still had to work on an “official” Am.History book this year because the other one didn’t “qualify.” ggrrrr) so I had those all out of the way. This year, though, I have to do 2 Language Arts classes to get all four credits for Language Arts/American Literature. It’s a bit heavy as far as workload goes, but I can take it at my own pace and it helps me absorb what I learn.

In my freshman and sophomore years, I took biology and marine biology and loved it. I have always loved science, though. My LEAST favorite subject would have to be math… I have always struggled with it and I still do. :frowning:

Wow… now I’m the one rambling!!

I’ll let someone else share now…

Haha. Same here. Which is why I’m taking the highest level math class that my school offers. Go figure.

I am also a part of the Class of 09. I’m graduating in June, and going to college, if I can get a fire lit under my bum to finish these stupid applications. This year has been ridiculous, with four AP classes and water polo and swim and college apps. I plan to go to college and double major in marine biology and Spanish, then go to medical school. Med school is partially my reason for taking AP Calculus BC this year. If I pass the AP test, then I never have to take another math class again, and I know the high school class, while it is far more demanding that the college class, it is also a much better learnig environment for me. I will be so happy when AP’s are over. At the moment, I’m on track to become a National AP Scholar, which means that I will have taken 8 or more AP tests with an average score of 4 or higher, and at least a 4 on eight tests.

So anyway. Hopefully all goes well. As my graduation present, my parents are buying me a car, a laptop, and letting me go to Germany with my friends. Yay for Class of 09!

I just thought… An interesting question would be, how many here on the forum are being homeschooled currently, or were homeschooled? I think there are a few at least…

If you’re interested in video editing, have you tried Final Cut Express? It’s a very popular editing software in the industry. I have it, but haven’t really worked with it that much yet…

And, if you’re thinking of getting a MacBook, you can get it pre-installed for an extra $199, since Final Cut is Apple’s software.

apple.com/finalcutexpress/

-C-3PO

Funny you should mention that, C-3PO… I am actually planning on budgeting FinalCut Studio (which is the big-time program that Hollywood uses… :stuck_out_tongue:) into my purchase, but Photoshop will definitely come first. FinalCut is crazy expensive, but it has all the tools I’ll ever need, and there’s always an upgrade you can buy when the software gets outdated. That program is the one that you can’t get pre-installed. You have to buy it separately. :unamused: (No wonder… it’s so expensive!!!)

I’m VERY happy that the new MacBooks all come with 4GB of RAM automatically installed. You used to have to add that on, but now it comes included with the price. yayy!

And yes: if there are any homeschoolers on the site, you should come here and talk about your experience. (Maybe I’ll have to start another thread…) Homeschoolers unite!!

I would love Final Cut Studio 2. But, it’s too expensive for me right now, so I just have Final Cut Express.

Final Cut Studio 2 is amazing though, and it is worth the price since it includes:

Final Cut Pro 6 for video and film editing
Motion 3 for graphics and animation in 3D
Soundtrack Pro 2 for professional audio post-production
Color for professional color grading and finishing
Compressor 3 and DVD Studio Pro 4 for digital delivery virtually anywhere — a disc, the web, Apple TV, iPod, or cell phone

It’s rated 4.5 / 5 stars, so it’s obviously very good. This is the package that I would love someday…

That would be cool… I was homeschooled as well, by the way.

-C-3PO

Haha, it is too expensive for me, too! You wanna talk about saving your money…!

Were you homeschooled all your life, or did you start in public school and finish homeschooled (or vice versa)? It’s been a very interesting experience for me. Some people are actually surprised at how smart I am (not to brag of course, I don’t want to come off like that at all!!!) and how easily I get along with people, because like I said earlier, there’s this stereotype that people have of homeschoolers, and they somehow think that we’re “socially challenged” and are “sheltered” from the world. Have you had people think like that about you or ask you questions like that? And I’m not saying all people advance this stereotype; I’m just referring to people “in general.” :stuck_out_tongue:

Lemme know what you think.

I was basically homeschooled K-12. I never went to a formal school, so I was able to learn at my own pace, and focus on what I was interested in. And yes, there are some people who have asked me questions like the ones you mentioned, but in some ways, I think I was more interested in learning since I wasn’t stuck in school all day.

Not being in school, I learned a lot through outside experiences, like going to places like zoos and museums to supplement what I was learning at the time. (More often than regular school field trips). I also have had the time to specialize in certain subjects, (on top of the main ones), and people are often surprised by how much information I retain on things I am interested in.

As for being sheltered, especially when I was younger I was quite often involved in outside activities, so I really don’t think I would have been any more or less social being in school.

Thought I’d revive this thread a bit.

My mom asked me a couple months ago about my graduation “ceremony”, which will probably be held privately at my church or something like that. Anyways, she was asking me a bunch of stuff, like what’s your class color, class song, etc. I have a couple things picked, but I thought maybe someone would be interested in helping me out a bit in picking some other things.

So far, this is what I have:

Class color - Purple/plum

Class quote - I’m having a hard time with this one. I’ve though about maybe picking an Einstein quote or a quote from some president’s inauguration or farewell address or something. Then I thought of one I penned: “You will never reach for the stars with your eyes on the ground.”

Class song - Toss ups between:
The Call - Regina Spektor
Little Wonders - Rob Thomas
Forever Young - Rod Stewart
Find Yourself - Brad Paisley

Any suggestions regarding these? I’m also thinking about making a small yearbook. It would just be pictures of me and my friends and family, but it would still be something to remember my graduating year.

little chef

To everyone graduating this year, I personally congratulate you. Graduation is a big stepping stone in one’s life, end end of one stage of school and the start of another stage in life.

Very interesting to read about how different people are graduating from different points in their education life. I’m almost at the peak (unless I take a Masters or Second Degree) of my academic education. I graduate with a Bachelor’s Degree from my ‘ivory tower’ end of this year. I’m not gonna give away my university or the course name (sorry, I like to keep my identity private), but it’s digital arts-related, and I hope to get a job as a journalist or animator. And I’m only 20 this year! Yeah, these are exciting times.

This is the big one, I have to do a porfolio, and I’m not sure if I’m up for it. So yeah, you can say I’m pretty stoked and scared at the same time.

Thought I would share some updates.

So my graduation ceremony is officially going to be on June 27, which I mentioned in the “What good things are happening in your life” thread. It is going to be held at my church, and my pastors are going to be a part of the ceremony as well.

I have to get together some pictures for a slideshow that I’ll be showing sometime during the ceremony, and I know know know that I’m going to cry when I watch it. My class song is Forever Young by Rod Stewart, and the lyrics to that song couldn’t be more perfect for my graduation. <3 I’ve invited all the people who have meant so much to me over the years, and just seeing them there is probably going to make me cry too. Gosh, I’m going to be a basket-case that day…! Just thinking about the whole thing makes me wanna cry…!

My class colors are officially red and white, and Mom ordered my cap, gown and tassle a couple days ago. I’ll be able to wear my red Chuck Taylors with it, so that makes me extremely happy!

Most of the people whom I’ve invited are going to be able to come, except for my youth leaders… they’ll be in New York that weekend for a baby shower. D: Thankfully my former youth pastors are going to be there and will speak at some point during the ceremony.

I’ll probably have someone taking pictures, and I really wish that I could post them up here after the ceremony, but I’d like to keep my identity safe and therefore probably will not. The only place you’ll see them is on Facebook - that’s the only place my mom will let me post up pics of myself.

So, yeah! I am so excited, and I can’t wait to get things wrapped up (schoolwork-wise) and can’t wait for the 27th to get here.

Wish you all could come! Wouldn’t that be awesome… to have all your friends from Pixar Planet attend your graduation?!! Dang, that would be like, the best thing that could ever happen to me… (keep on dreaming, little chef… keep on dreaming… :unamused:)
