I had a sudden urge this past week to go out and purchase some DVDs of the classic
Disney cartoons, featuring such characters as Chip and Dale, Donald Duck, and Goofy.
These cartoons are
fantastic. Not only do they bring back great childhood memories, but they’re some of the most well animated
shorts, not to mention great for reference. They’re funny, without being too
silly, and still enjoyable after all these years of not being able to watch them.
The funniest cartoons
are Donald’s by far, but Goofy ranks as my favorite classic Disney character. The best part of my classics
collection so far is Volume 1 of The Chronological Donald (1934-1941) from the Walt Disney Treasures series.
Volume 2 has yet to be located in my area.

Yeah, the classics are awesome. I’ve seen a few on
YouTube but of course, that is only a small number of the bunch. You can also buy them on iTunes but at $1.99 for
a 7 minute clip it isn’t really worth it… just because with that money you could buy a 50 minute episode of
Lost. But anyways, the really really early ones are rather violent. Lol. Like Steamboat- Mickey’s like swinging
a cat and plucking pig tails… lol.
I like the erm… Clock Cleaners?? one. Yeah. I don’t remember what
any of them were called.

It’s interesting you should bring that up.
Leonard Maltin discusses this in the intro of Volume 1 of The Chronological Donald. Since he worded everything
so well, I’ll just quote him:
"Parents began to object whenever Mickey did anything rude or crude.
Let’s face it. In his early cartoons, Mickey was not a model of exemplary behavior.
Donald was an
innovative character because he was not only allowed to lose his temper, it was his
dominant personality trait. So people expected it and enjoyed it, too. He provided such a contrast to Mickey
and good-natured Goofy that he became the studio’s #1 scene stealer."

Yeah Donald always had a certain greatness for the screen about him. Heh. But in the beginning
Mickey really does seem like a normal kid… one who makes trouble from time to time. It’s rather different from
today’s Mickey who is made to be an example of being good.
You should mseen them frame by frame… it
really is amazing stuff
I hate how they’ve updated the characters by drawing them with thicker lines and making them ‘neater’. The
old cartoons have more spirit and are much more enjoyable.
I don’t mind them
being “neater” . . . but I do cringe occasionally when I see a 3-D Mickey (Anyone remember that his
ears NEVER move . . . just side to side!?)
It never bothered me whenever they updated the look
of any characters, but I do agree with you about the quality of the cartoons. While
the ones shown on House of Mouse are funny, they can’t compare to the
classics.

Lol. I agree that the 3D ones are
rather frightening. It’s hard to get characters an audience is so used to being flat to suddenly become all
poppy-out-y
I love the Walt Disney Treasures! I’ve watched almost all of the classic cartoon ones.
My favorite is Goofy cartoons.
About the computer generated Mickey Mouse–The Mickey Mouse Club House
children’s TV show on Playhouse Disney features a computer animated Mickey Mouse whose ears move side to side,
not fixated on his head. While I agree that it’s an improvement, I don’t think the overall look of the show
looks complete. I’ll stick with the classic Mickey Mouse look any day.
Yeah, I remember the first time I saw 3D Mickey, and
it was just, like, wrong…It wasn’t the Mickey that we all know and love, it was evil monster Mickey wanting to
kill all children!
Well, not exactly, but you get what I mean.
