Hi Bradandez here. I wanted to start a thread
on the Comic section in the newspaper.
I’m the comic cartoonist for my school paper.
But any way what is your favorite comic?
Your the cartoonist for your school? Well, that’s pretty schweet.
Anything you can post here?
I like Pearls Before Swine by Stephan Pastis.
Garfield, for sure. But I hate Family Circus and Marmaduke. I Don’t think that The Peanuts is funny, either, but I don’t hate it.
Very cool
I’ve been in love with Get Fuzzy for years now, love it
I still miss Calvin & Hobbes - the Last Great Comic Strip of the 20th Century. As with the Pixar films, people generations from now will still be able to enjoy C&H because it is so timeless.
I miss the Far Side, too. Often imitated, never duplicated.
Peanuts is my favorite. I’ve recently grown to like Pearls Before Swine. While I don’t always agree with the comic artist’s politics, there’s some really funny stuff in PBS.
I love the Peanuts, especially Snoopy and Woodstock. I also find Get Fuzzy pretty entertaining. And I, too, miss Calvin & Hobbes . Good stuff.
Huge Calvin & Hobbes fan here. I also really like FoxTrot, despite the criticism it tends to get sometimes.
FoxTrot did a hilarious series of the teen son working at the movie theatre when Star Wars: Phantom Menace came out - best one had him working the concession stand when the two little kids in Jedi robes try to use their “Jedi mind trick” powers to get their snacks on the cheap: “I believe a dollar will be sufficient.”
Favorite Calvin & Hobbes story was this big plot about C&H trying to lure Susie into a water balloon ambush. It went for days, with Calvin writing a note to Hobbes in “secret code” for Susie to accidentally find, etc. etc., until the big payoff: Susie doesn’t show up at the right time, and an angry Calvin goes looking for her. Last frame of the day has us looking straight at the corner of the house, with Calvin coming up one side, and Susie hiding around the corner, clutching the garden hose and silently counting down Calvin’s approach. Of course, Calvin gets soaked, and goes fuming back to Hobbes, who decides it would be a shame for all those water balloons to go to waste…
Pearls Before Swine is my favourite. It’s the only comic that has made me laugh out loud often. I also like Fox Trot and Peanuts.
Now please don’t flood me with insults, but REALLY dislike Mutts. It’s only purpose is to make dog lovers go “Aww…” It’s not even trying to be funny half the time! I do like the art though…
I like Garfield, Zits, Famiy Curcis. Also like Calvin and Hobbes. Wish it was still in the newspaper.
Zits. When I discovered Zits it was great because it seemed like the writers took the comic straight from my own life. Even now, I can still relate to it. I also enjoy Pearls Before Swine, Rhymes with Orange, Non-Sequitur, Crankshaft, Beetle Bailey, Blondie, Bizzaro, Real Life Adventures, Speed Bump, and of course the classics, Peanuts & Garfield.
Garfield is great, but lately I feel that the comics just haven’t been that funny.
I also like The Wizard of Id, The Far Side (that one’s really good!), and Footrot Flats, the latter being a comic from New Zealand. Woooo NZ pride!
I would be a cartoonist if only I could think up jokes every day. lol
I agree with most of everything said here, but I wanted to add an underrated favorite: Luann!
I’m a fan of:
Sherman’s Lagoon - Love the zany humour and running jokes (the suckerfish, giant squid, and Filmore’s trips to 'Acension Island). Sherman’s naivety and simpleton personality reminds me of Homer Simpson in a way.
Over the Hedge - Yes, it’s the comic strip that inspired one of Dreamworks’ best movies, and it shows. A brilliant satire and commentary on suburban living and its effects on the local wildlife. RJ and Verne make an endearing ‘odd couple’ in their attempts to understand their ‘neighbours’.
Get Fuzzy - I’m a sucker for puns, and this strip has it by the boatloads. It’s fun to see what depths of depravity Bucky will sink to, in his exploitation of Satchel and Rob, and his efforts to be rid of Fungo the ferret.
Foxtrot - One of the few family ‘sitcom’ comics I can stand, thanks to Bill Amend’s witty send-ups of popular culture and science (mostly through Jason the geek), and the Foxes’ constant quarrels with each other. Plus, Quincy’s one bad iguana.
Garfield - I don’t really ‘love’ or ‘hate’ this per se, but now that Jon’s finally hooked up with the vet, it makes for some interesting plot developments.
Zits - Jerry and Jim really have a handle on the inner psyche of a teenager. Love the visual metaphors they use to exaggerate Jeremy or his parents’ POV.
Calvin & Hobbes - Simple yet complex at the same time. Calvin’s constant philosophical musings with his pet tiger are one of my favourite bits. And for the record, I think Calvin ‘imagines’ Hobbes to be real, but my brother thinks otherwise.
Non Sequitur - The only comic whose name I can never pronounce, this is also one of the most intelligent ‘life’ satirists I enjoy, and is funnier than Bizarro IMO. Plus, Lucy + Danae = Awesome
There are a couple of comic strips I absolutely hate, okay, dislike reading for some reason or another. No offense to any fans, but here are some of them:
Baby Blues - I used to enjoy reading it, Zoe and Hammie were cute in particular. But when Wanda and Darryl are interrupted from their own activities by Zoe running into the room complaining of Hammie puking on the carpet or Wren spilling milk on the keyboard again for the umpteenth time, you not only start to feel sorry for them, you are reminded the ‘troubles’ of raising kids. Not exactly encouraging news for would-be-parents.
The Born Loser - Side-shot of Brutus. He’s saying something to his boss/wife/kid, etc. Front-shot of his face, close-up. Another side-shot of boss/wife/kid, etc. Side-shot of the two. Deliver punchline. Pretty apt title for a pretty boring comic.
Cathy - Honestly, does anyone find this funny? Maybe it’s because I’m not in the same situation of a ‘well-fed’ shopaholic suffering a mid-life crisis, but really, does the protagonist do anything besides complain about her life and go through emotional meltdowns in the middle of the office/shopping mall/dinner party? Sorry Ms Guisewhite, but I really, really don’t like your comic with a vengeance.
