the only thing that stops my belief of any advancement is the trash compactors in the belly of the axiom are extremely similar to wall-e, in both action and appearance.
I wonder when Buy n Large was founded and by whom? All I know is that the humans left Earth around 2110 and the Buy n Large website is from 2057 (see the copyright at the bottom of the website).

Well there probably wasn’t any need to upgrade the Wall-e unit besides making it bigger. After that it would just be matinence.
[spoiler]WALL•E wasn’t really built to fly; he’s not aerodynamic at all. The WALL•As on the AXIOM were from hundreds of years earlier.
When Shelby Forthright sent the A113 message to the AXIOM autopilots, he was on Earth, and this was when the WALL•Es all broke down (or so he thought… 
), and the AXIOM was already in space. In other words, the WALL•Es and WALL•As both existed at the same time. As for EVE being more advanced, notice that the Captain, when seeing WALL•E for the first time, was startled by his “ugliness” (i prefer to call it “uniqueness”), so there must have been updates to the robots during the 700 years on the AXIOM. Notice that M•O is also very much more advanced, but he too must have existed at the same time. So, how come WALL•E’s not so advanced?[/spoiler]
So, the answer is:
EVE is at most a few decades more advanced than WALL•E. And WALL•E could not be upgraded to fly, unless BnL came out with a really strong fire extinguisher.[/spoil]
WALL-E, EVE and M-O are all made to do different things, now consider this, WALL-E was made a little before M-O and EVE, that’s where the advancements could have come from. But there’s more, WALL-E wasn’t made to be sleek because he wasn’t supposed to interact with anyone, he was just built for the job, M-O on the other hand was going to be around humans, so they made him more presentable. Also consider WALL-E is like a tractor, exposed to the elments to do what he was made for, and he’s been out there in the dirt for 700 years, while someone like M-O, VAQ-M and PR-T are sleeker, they also serve a purpose, but they are meant to be luxurious, and they’ve been in a squeaky clean, almost perfect environment. It’s like a VHS player and a Blu-Ray player, it hasn’t been THAT many years in between each of the players, yet Blu-Ray is of far better quality. WALL-E was probably built a little before the Axiom technology was, yet there is a big difference, and it is totally possible.
martini pretty much got it down. Heck, the tractor thing is actually out of Mr. Stanton himself’s mouth. “If WALL-E is a tractor, EVE is a Mercedes” he said.
[spoiler]Still, I think EVE is newer. Here’s a theory. Originally, the cruise was gonna be 5 years, which meant that they already knew when they’d go back. It’s possible the original deadline failed, and that’s when EVE’s started going out yearly to see if they could go back. Plus WALL-E could have been around a bit cleaning trash before the human evacuated… No, that wouldn’t work. They clearly had him marked Earth class, which means there was another place to live already.
Hmmm… But it’s heavily implied that EVE is younger. This does bring up some interesting thoughts. [/spoiler]
remember the [spoil]wall-e advertisements? working to dig you out? we dont know how new those were, but if they were up at the time the humans evacuated, wall-e must have been relatively new. shelby also said that it was not going as planned with the wall-e’s cleaning up the earth in the 5-year cruise timeline; they must have been newly created to clean up while the cruise happened. eve couldnt have been part of the plan originally. she either must have been created onboard, or BNL foresaw this and had them premade and put on the axiom for that purpose[/spoil]
Netbug you do bring up a really good point, [spoil]once they knew that the clean up was not working they could have built the EVE probes to see if anything had been fixed.[/spoil]

Well, I think EVE was made before the clean-up plan was scrapped, becasue why else would they make probes to find life, if they were never supposed to go home. Anyhow, I think WALL-E is a little (or a lot) older than the AXIOM’s robots since there were humans around when he was being built or operated, it’s apparent since there are billboards about him. I mean, who would advertise robots when there is no one around?
I think EVE was definitely made before A113 went into effect. Remember the BnL CEO had the recorded message about the EVE probe (mentioning it specifically) returning with a specimen. There’s no reason for them to have started creating EVE’s and for him to have recorded that message after they had determined Earth was uninhabitable.
