Dang, that’s a shame lizardgirl, I had the same situation until the last week it was showing in my local theater, then it moved to 2D. If you plan on going to repeat viewings, I think having the option of 2D would be much better, only once in 3D. Of course, I’ve seen it 18 times in 3D, but I would have preferred 2D, I simply didn’t have the option. I guess all the better though, considering it helps out the earnings a bit more, a little bit more moolah for Pixar to show my appreciation!
If you have to see it in 3D, don’t expect anything special. Just pay attention to the movie, don’t look for the 3D, it’ll distract you from the film. Just act like it’s a 2D film, and you’ll be fine. Hehe.
Yeah, I share the same peeve in Oz, lizardgirl! My local theatre has it all in exclusive 3-D screenings, with only one 2-D last Wednesday for a Babes-In-Arms session! Besides the early hour, I didn’t want to contend with dimmed lights and screaming babies, so I passed up on that one. It’s been in release for two weekends now, I hope my theatre opens up a few 2-D screenings to entice latecomers! Then again, I can always go to a competitor chain…
The British (and Northern Irish) people are almost ready for takeoff. Brace yourselves, lads!
Rachel is about right, the prices are the same in Sydney. Freakin’ heck, I was comparing ticket prices back in 2007 (I collect ticket stubs of every movie I’ve seen in cinemas since I began university) the other day, and the prices has steadily climbed about a quarter since my arrival in Oz!
And yes, the 3-D is more about depth perception than poking your eyes out (which is what I tell my curious friends who ask if the 3-D is worth the extra dough). One particularly memorable scene was when the house was in the storm and it swings out to nearly take off the heads of the front row, but other than that, not much else I can recall 3-D wise. I haven’t been to a 2-D screening yet (having only watched it one miserable time), but I’ll try to see it off before it ends its Oz run.
And yeah, you might want to go early for a cool 3-D twist on a classic tradition, lizardgirl. I didn’t have the Partly Cloudy short in my advanced showing (stupid GU, I want my refund! ), so I may go one more time to catch it on the big screen.
TDIT - you might want to try out surburban cinemas. From my experiences there’s more 2D showings than 3D showing in the North Shore & Western suburbs, unlike in the CBD. Event Cinemas & Hoyts show both a few times a day. If there was only 3D available, I wouldn’t be forking out the money to reach my goal of 10 times (I’m currently at 5).
Thanks for the tips, Phileas! Fortunately, I wouldn’t have to travel that far, there are other Hoyts cinemas in my vicinity, and I’ve been eyeing their 2D sessions. It’s been its third weekend in release in Sydney and it’s still playing pretty regularly! Not much competition aside from Mao’s Last Dancer, Fame and Surrogates, so yeah, still going strong! I might be able to catch it after my assignments deadline (three weeks from now) guilt-free! Hopefully.
Rachel- Well, the main reason why I wanted to see it in 2D on the opening night is because on Friday, the only person who is free to go and see Up with me is my mum, and she can’t stand watching films in 3D. I’ve got a few friends popping back from university on Friday though, so I might be able to convince them to see the film with me instead. I’m very curious about the different initial presentation…Either way, I’ll see it in both 2D and 3D at some point.
Over here, the main cinema offer that most people take advantage of is Orange Wednesdays, where people who use Orange for their mobile phone service can text ‘film’ to 241 and get two cinema tickets for the price of one! I’ve taken advantage of this many a time.
Lizardgirl If you have a Cineworld anywhere near you at all (Though it might be unlikely) I would strongly suggest having a look at their Unlimited movie card. It’s really quite a good deal, even works with Orange Wednesdays! Essentially, you only have to pay £1.50 to see a 3D movie. On top of a monthly fee of £13 which already works out a lot cheaper than going to the cinema twice in one month. Although with all of this said…I don’t work for Cineworld, but i just find the card to be useful. Of course, if you don’t even have a Cineworld near you…then i’m sorry for divulging useless information to you
Back onto topic, i’m starting to think i can finally get excited to see UP! It’s taken long enough to get here, i’ve been good and stayed away from a lot of tempting youtube videos. I’m just hoping it will all be worth it. I’m trying to keep expectations low, personally. I wouldn’t want to leave the cinema feeling let down if it didn’t live up to my own expectations. After all, it’s been ten movies now and i’ve come to expect a certain standard from this little studio.
But i’m eagerly awaiting the chance to park myself in a seat on Friday to see the movie. No more listening to the soundtrack thinking “I wonder what happens when this music is playing…”
Mark-E- I’ve looked at that but it’s a lot of money to pay out all at once, as unfortunately you can’t pay out month by month. Didn’t realise it still worked with Orange Wednesdays, though! Hmm…Well, there have been a lot of good films coming out lately…And yep, Cineworld is my closest cinema so that’s perfect! Thanks for the info.
And ditto, it’s a good idea to try and not expect too much, so then after the film we can be like, ‘OMGZ that was amazing’.
If my calculations are correct, you’ve got roughly 24 hours, maybe a bit more, until the first showings of Up in the UK! AAAAH! I’m SO EXCITED for you guys, I can’t wait to start nerding out over it with Tom and lizardgirl, as well as everyone else on here.
Mark-E: Oh, believe me, if you leave the theater as nearly as enamored as I am EVERY TIME, you’re gonna flip your lid over the movie. It’s fantastic, seriously fantastic.
Well, I’m seeing it at 4pm tomorrow, and it’s half one now so roughly 27 hours to go…I can’t believe it’s so close! Eep! I watched a special on Up the other day (tried to find it on YouTube to share with you guys but it wasn’t anywhere to be seen) and watching it made me so excited even though it didn’t really reveal anything and, for some reason, focused on the 3D aspect of things. I mean, these interviewers had gone into Pixar itself and were able to interview some Pixarians, and yet all they were doing was talking about how 3D works. FAIL.
Aaanyway…Maybe if I get on with some homework the time will go quicker.
So what countried aside from the UK are still waiting for the release? Am I right in thinking Japan has to wait until December? That’s ridiculous if so.
I believe we still have Italy and Japan, but I’m not sure if we have any members from those countries…
Oh boy, 1 more day to go for the Brits! In less than 24 hours, you will witness the most fantastic, truly marvelous, simply splendid, cracker-of-a-thrill-ride you’ve ever experienced!
Okay, perhaps I should lower your expectations. It’s an absolutely appaling, terrible, deplorable movie of the lowest denominator. Utter rubbish. Best to not get your hopes up.
And I thought we had it bad, Rey…Still, I’m pleased to hear that they’re going to make a big deal out of Up in Japan. If there’s one big complaint I have of the way Pixar movies are released over here (aside from the delayed release), it’s the fact that they seem to make no fuss at all. I’ve seen one small poster in town, and watched one advert on TV. There just doesn’t seem to be any hype about it!
Ahhh, quite exciting! Not long to go now at all! Only a few hours before i finally get to see the film. Although first i’m fairly sure I have to sit through Halloween 2 (Boo). But then I get to see UP and all will be well!
When I was speaking to my brother earlier we were having a back and forth about what order to see the films in. I naturally said that we should see Halloween first, with my logic being…if it was bad. Then UP would be much better to go and see after because it would make the trip seem worthwhile. Nobody likes to leave a cinema disappointed, after all!
He had this crazy notion that I considered UP to be the Main event feature that the whole day is building too…what a ludicrous idea for him to think! Why, the very sound of it is quite preposterous!..
But yes, I’m terribly excited to see UP. I may even purchase one of the cinema’s promotional movie cups, I know how to live life in the fast lane
Isn’t the summer in Japan dominated by their anime in theaters? Based on what Rey told us last winter with Wall-E, it looks like a good strategy for Pixar, since Wall-E was tops for about 5-6 weeks before completely disappearing. Anyways, they waited over a year to get Ponyo ready for us to view, Lassiter getting those big names to do the voices.
I’m gonna add some info from DarkHandOfSigourneyWeaver’s info.
Pixar has already released Up during premiere in Japan few months from now, and at the same time, they have already release the DVD/BD set, so, Japanese can invest more to Pixar.
