Crazy, Crazy Keyboards!

While travelling recently through Europe, I didn’t have my computer with me, so a couple times I went into internet cafes… and the keyboards I saw were so strange.

The letters were all mixed up from the normal English keyboard. About 80% were in the right place, but for instance, the “A” and the “M” and the “Q” were in different spots. You had to press SHIFT to have any numbers appear, and ALT GRAPHICS to get the @ symbol. But more than those little things, were the placement of the letters. As I said, about 80% of the letters were in the “proper” place but certain letters were instead way off from where they should be.

I saw this in at least two internet cafes in different countries.

For those living in Europe, is this standard, or do you know what I’m talking about?

For instance, it’s usually QWERT but instead it’s (if I remember right) AWERT. And the M is in the wrong place and a few others.

What gives?

And worse, in this internet age, where dots (.) and @s are important, you had to always press either SHIFT (for a dot) or ALT GRAPHICS for a @ to appear… really cumbersome.

Does anyone type on a keyboard that is NOT “Q-W-E-R-T-Y” but instead “A-W-E-R-T-Y”?

What’s the deal here?

What’s strange is that some keyboards were “normal” (not all of them I saw were this way)… but I saw this “weird layout” type of keyboard in at least 2-3 different places in different areas. Made it really hard to type when the letters’ placement is all changed…

Thanks Fett101, for the Wiki Link.
That indeed is it… and it makes sense, because I saw them in Belgium (as the wiki page mentions).

Let alone the letter changes, it sure made things more cumbersome in this internet age with having to press extra keys to get the dot or the @ symbol each time. Well at least it wasn’t just a practical joke or something…

Thanks for the info!
