Dash Parr

He’s cool, he’s cute, he’s fast, he’s The Dash! We all love this character for many reasons. Please, express your thoughts and feelings about Dashiell Robert Parr.

Dash is my favorite member of the Parr family, and for one reason only: speed. I’ve always envied his ability to race at a thousand miles per hour wherever he wants and whenever he wants (under the careful watch of his mother’s eyes, of course). I’ve always been fascinated with speed and the thrill of it; I love anything to do with the subject; the faster the better…

Dash is an absolute adorable character. I love his personality. Like most little brothers, they are full of energy and mischief, causing trouble for both Violet and Helen. How can anyone resist his cute voice and his activeness?

His speed is one of the classic super powers. I love the way he uses them. He puts a tack on Bernie’s chair, to annoy Violet, and to kick bad guys but.

I think Spencer Fox did an excellent job voicing him. He really put the energy and chacter into Dash.

Oh Dash, he’s one of several characters I can hear using one of Bart Simpson’s classic lines from a Treehouse of Horror episode:
“I will use this power only to annoy!”

I think my favorite scene with him is the 100 Mile Dash. It is so intense, yet he is still funny and super at the same time.

Some of my favourite scenes from The Incredibles involve Dash. The bit where he’s running on water, and behind him you can see parts of the scenery breaking apart. It just looks amazing. Infact that whole chase sequence is just gripping!

Also one of the funniest parts of the film, at the end where he’s participating in the race at school, and the rest of the family are going “Go Dash…run…okay now slow it down…try and make it close!” (or something like that), and the guy sitting next to the family just looks at them really confused. Gets me every time.

Stupid busy-ness. I should have commented on the other three long before now (especially Vi’s!)

sigh anyways…
So Dash. I adore that little squirt. My second fav of the movie. His character was vital for the movie. While the movie itself was chaotic, Dash’s character was the only one to truly embrace the hectic nature of the story. When his parents were calm and reasonable and his sister was doing her best to stay out of the way, Dash is in the thick of it. He had just the right amount of hyper to balance out the characters’ dispositions.

His relationship with his family was also vital. Obviously he looked up to his dad a lot, which is how it should be. If I may momentarily go deeper into that: I think Dash senses his father’s disparity, and as a result fights off mediocrity by getting into trouble with his powers. Of course, it doesn’t help that he’s right on the edge of that rebellious age.

His relationship with is sister has always been my favorite of all the characters. There’s that perfect distance between their ages that makes squabbles inevitable. But we know he loves her from some of the best scenes between them: the “don’t touch my sister” scene and the one where she shield them both from the omnidroid. I almost, almost teared up. After all that bickering proir to that scene, it made that moment very touching.

I think his future would be a bright one. With a little training in patience and close combat, he could be a phenomenal hero! Maybe a weapon to even out his offensive/defensive skills would be good. And because of what we saw with his big sis chances are he would function well in a team or duo situation. Not too sure about him going solo.

But I was wondering, did anyone else see a little of the “middle child” syndrome? The need to be into everything, to get attention, even if it was negative?

The same goes for me, Haunt. I was instantly reminded of my sister and I when I first saw that scene – we’re constantly bickering, but we really do love each other to the core…

I sometimes fantasize about this, but do you think Dash finds romance after the movie?

raises hand Yeah I’ve got a story line with that as the main theme. It happens about 4 or 5 years after the movie. Oy, how nerdly of me. :sunglasses:

raises eyebrow You fantasize about it? I won’t ask. Yes I believe he does and like everyone else I have fanfiction lines about it.

I have plenty more to say in this thread but will do so when I have a bit more time.

ok - now I have a bit more time so I shall post…

You know, you could argue that Dash is among the most important characters in Pixar history in that if it wasn’t for him, Pixar Planet would most likely not exist today. Everybody gasps Allow me to explain…

Story time kiddies.

Here’s how we test how well you folks actually know Dash (me) as I give you my backstory from my pre-The Incredibles days. Prior to the movie I honestly had no idea what Pixar was and if I’d even heard the name I wouldn’t have known it. Toy Story was intriguing to me and I saw interesting prospects for this new CGI but as far as I was concerned I was getting “beyond that” even though I had enjoyed the movie. The same was true for A Bug’s Life and Toy Story 2 which I also lumped into the big Disney bubble that I was starting to view as a blemish on the face of society. Monsters Inc I hardly even noticed as I was turning 16 and Finding Nemo I actually ripped apart and was a very vocal critic for its underlying political message as I’d seen it twice with my brother and saw it as another low slap from the Disney that had brought us the recent (and still my least favorite of their films) Atlantis and Treasure Planet. Of course having seen Finding Nemo, naturally I had become acquainted with a trailer for a certain The Incredibles and I was most assuredly appalled by this film. All I saw was a modern rip off (as so many movies are) of a classic known as the Fantastic Four which was due its own movie release. Naturally I was livid.

Then, the Disney marketing machine kicked in. All the sudden I was surrounded by Incredibles. They were on TV, in the stores, and on food. And being a new college student I noticed this quite a bit. Most importantly though, while my attention was being peaked all around, this one particular character stood out to me. He was a little guy with a large presence and had a charm, smile, and laugh that persistently reminded me of my own little brother. That blonde hair and blue eyes made for an adorable image and you couldn’t help but admire his wit. His whole persona felt like the real deal, an actual little kid with super powers which on its own wasn’t necessarily novel but were explored in a new way. Top this off with an entire section of the kids clothes at Wal-Mart was decked out with him so I caught his cute little eye practically every night as I walked back toward the electronics or groceries. Yes I was a “Wal-Rat” back then. The final straw came when I got word from home that my kid brother was very anxious to see the film now.

I finally broke down and gave in. December 5th, 2004, a full month after its release I went to see The Incredibles. As you know it struck me beyond what anything ever had before and Dash very quickly became my favorite character. He reminded me of myself and of my brother and was exactly the kind of kid I would love to have some day. He was a deep character and not just a small role either. His drive to achieve and not just be another celebration of mediocrity was so real in his attitude and very realistically child-like. His character was also true in that he was braggy in the typical kid kind of way; bold, brave, and confident (all of which grew in time), but not unafraid or overly sure of his own ability. He also had an easily bruised (and recovered) ego. Best of all, while he did have a bit of a cocky streak (what 10-year old boy doesn’t?), it wan’t excessive and he wasn’t blatantly disobedient. In fact his relationship with authority was quite endeering considering there were so many factors that made him great but unable to show it and how that realtes.

Speaking of relationships, how he connected with his family was very important. Again so true of a real little boy squabbling with his sister, revering his father as a god, and (while not always pleased with her decisions) respecting his mother as a sage. Yet he loved them all despite their tendancy to embarass him or impede his desires. In the script there’s a line when in the plane Helen yells at them for leaving Jack-Jack alone and Dash goes on with his spiel and ends with “We wouldn’t do that, I love my baby brother!” I wish desperately that the last part hadn’t been cut and I can hear him saying it quite plainly in my head. Then how he responds to his parents praises and fights valiantly to protect his sister are very noble qualities that, while often over-shadowed by his immaturity, are always apparent in the undertones of his character. I could also reitterate the middle-child syndrome here.

He’s also smart, clever, and determined, but also young and inexperienced. Dash makes a lot of mistakes in the movie. They’re not stupid mistakes but rather novice ones that he learns from and applies later on. He certainly has luck and good fortune on his side through much of it and one might attribute it to the instincts of innocence. In fact, that, in my opinion, is his most important and endeering quaity and the one which still attracts me to him the most - innocence. He doesn’t have any of the weight of the world baring down on him and he can be serious in his own childish way. He lives for the now and wants to do nothing more than to just be who he truly is and free from the hastles of adult problems. He sure doesn’t let them get him down. That’s also a big reason I feel that Billy Joel’s Running on Ice is such a great theme for him.

And of course, you can’t forget the sheer joy and childish exuberance he displays through out the film. How honest was that? I credit Spencer Fox and his talent for the ability to pull that off so well.

Needless to say, I went back to see the film again the next night and loved it even more. That was the first time I took notice of two very important names - “Pixar” & “Brad Bird.” Turning my free time as a Wal-Rat in a different direction and going online to study everything I could about Pixar, Brad, and The Incredibles began the journey that leads us to where we are today.

Now for the future, here’s what I see for Dash. I imagine he’ll be fairly smart especially in a philisophical kind of way. I suspect that he will in time be able to use his power for speed reading and books of all sorts will become vastly interesting to him and full of surprises, fun, lessons, and knowledge. This will also provide him a bit of an outlet for his energy that would be less noticable by others. He’s very in touch with his power already and views it as a gift so I suspect he will want to use it as much as possible and that his desire to use it to his fullest will not change. I do however see him as being responsible with it (especially as he can use it more freely) as that seems to be in tune with his father’s personality which he greatly shares. I also think that while he will be athletic he won’t be a jock per se as he quickly becomes bored with sports and the lack of challenge they offer. Only Martial Arts might be an exception since it has obvious advantages for him (especially focus) while his speed doesn’t give him an edge that dulls the experience.

He’ll probably be mostly a loner since he won’t be a jock but he certainly won’t fit in with the nerdy crowd either. While inteligent, he’s like his father in lacking a bit of street wisdom and certainly doesn’t embrace school work. He’ll suffice for the easy B rather than push a little bit for the A he’s capable of. This of course is perfectly fine by him as I’m sure he’d much rather focus on and embrace the super side of his life, something I’m sure will be frowned on by his parents - especially his mother - who would likely encourage him to devote more time to his friends and school. I suspect he’ll also have a very good relationship with Jack-Jack since at 8 years older the boy will very much look up to him and Dash will eat up the attention. As the duo becomes solid they will certainly be the bain of their sister’s existance.

Most of Dash’s friends will certainly be super as well as most of his crushes but as a teen I doubt he would persue any of these for the awkwardness of publicity and his own insecurity of risking his identity. As such he will likely have a few short lived romances with the girls from school (undoubtedly he’ll be quite a looker) but really won’t be into any of them quite like he is supering. I suspect he’ll also be a loner on the battlefield too since one of his biggest flaws is that he likes things his way and will only form allies of opportunity with those around him at the moment. This will likely lead to many rough battles, close calls, and scares since the very nature of his power is more defensive. But since he can cover long distances fast he’ll likely feel obligated to be involved in everything leading to a lot of dramain his super life. His cosest ally will likely be his sister and later his brother because of their obvious skill and advantages working together as well as a preference by their parents for their own safety.

Eventually he will probably meet and settle down with another super once he’s off on his own some and more comfortable about opening up to someone. He may initially have a few high-profile romances, uninterested in the long term, until his own clock starts ticking much like his father. I doubt he’d ever really retire from supering and any “real” job would just be a cover, enough to sustain him and his family. I also have no doubt he’d end up with kids, a couple of boys to carry on the family tradition and by Murphy’s Law at least one girl that would be a spitting image of her mother and not unlike Dash too that will certainly scare him to death and gray his hair with time. His family will become a central part of his life like he did his father’s though he will have it much easier since in his world supering and his family can be together as one.

So yes… there are my feeling, thoughts, predictions, hopes, and dreams. I think I’ve made it as clear as I can as to why Dash is my favorite Pixar character. =)

That was quite a beautiful and heart-felt composition, Dash. I enjoyed reading it.

That’s precious…

Loved your peice there, Dash. I can see why you like him so much now.
