As you know, the Wii, PS3, and the Xbox 360 all have programs to let you design the perfect virtual you. So, let’s talk a little bit about them and their… chins.
All the major consoles now come with a system that lets you make a character, so let’s examine some of the aspects of these systems and compare and contrast them.
Let’s start with the PlayStation 3. First big question: Male or female? When choosing this, I was reminded of my 14 year old self when I never chose to use female characters on Mortal Kombat. I wouldn’t even play as Johnny Cage.
What kind of face do you guys choose? Do you guys do customization? A Bruce Campbell chin would be nice. I have always wondered, what if while I’m customizing my avatar’s face, it just screams with agony?
Oh, and there’s also an advanced menu, despite the already varied choices. This is probably what God does when he makes new people. ![]()
What surprises me is that there are like a thousand options to customize your face, but there are only six shirts and all are seemingly from the same section of JC Pennies? lol
Next, let’s take a look at Microsoft’s solution of avatars. First, we have to choose a starting point - a number of already created avatars for you to choose from - which is already incredible.
Instead of charting the x and y-axis, you could choose what kind of chin or hairstyle you want, of which the latter, if you make a poor choice, your avatar will be a haircut away from being a guy or girl. ![]()
The other controls are mostly the same - choice of shirt, accessories, etc.
Now, let’s go back one more step where this personalization of your character began - back on the Wii.
You can choose different type of face shapes with this, but with a good gum-job and your avatar will look like a Pac-Man.
Quickest way to make your avatar ugly is to take his/her eyes and just move them slightly apart, and it’s like “Whoa! Good heavens!”
It’s amazing Sony saw this and go like, “You know what would make this better? A million more options so no one could figure it out!” Look how elegant, simple, and inviting the Wii character customizations are.
Overall, I think all the creation systems kinda reflect the system. i.e.: Nintendo Wii’s the simple one for everybody, the PlayStation’s the hardcore one for the super-nerds, and the 360’s in the middle for your average gaming.
When I create the virtual version of myself, I would want to see the essence of me because that’s what people want to see - the essence of yourselves. I like the essence of me, not the really detailed version with all the imperfections, the exact contours and everything. After all, we play video games to escape the reality, why not escape the reality of our ugly existence? ![]()
So, it’s your turn. Post your thoughts. What kind of avatars do you like to create? What kind of character customization do you favor the most? Comment, rate, and sub… oh, right, we’re not on YouTube, sorry.
Well, I guess you just… post, and vote. ![]()
