Just out of curiousity, which films did you guys find under/overrated?
I think Hunchback is underrated while Little Mermaid is overrated.
I kind of see Hunchback being very underrated. I know it was dark but it was just wonderful. Besides, the songs were good and it had a great villain.
Yeah, it is. I wasn’t ranking based on my quality judgment–if I was, Herc would be in the lower half. I just have a personal fondness for it.
I see. Hercules wasn’t that bad aside from the annoying love interest and gospel women.
Hunchvack is underrated. I think it is bcause people are used to the goody two shoes Disney of todsy.
It reminded me of something Walt did with his films. Which would me aiming more for the intelligence of adults. Of course, the film will have things for kids in them.
But…but…I love Megara!!! She has an attitude, but I think they were just try to make her seem tortured and appeal to women.
And anyway, Hunchback is by far the most under rated. Followed by Rescuers Down Under.
This is true…in my world.
Hmm, I s’pose I would say that The Hunchback of Notre Dame is underrated, but it hardly ranks among my favorite Disney classics. Even I was surprised in high school, the first time viewing the film since it came out in theaters, and I concluded that its mature themes and equally mature music (for the most part) just may not be appreciated by many. I’l also throw in a vote for the two Rescuers movies, both of which aren’t half-bad and quite enjoyable IMO.
I’ve probably posted in this thread before but here’s my list, which I try to balance between personal attachment and the actual quality:
- The Lion King (yep, another one of those TLK adorers!)
- Bambi
- Beauty and the Beast
- Aladdin (can you tell I love the early '90s?)
- Cinderella
- Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs
- Mulan
-
101 Dalmatians
9-10. Tie: The Jungle Book, The Sword in the Stone (comment on TSITS: I think this movie is actually overlooked because of its bleak color palette and perhaps rough animation style, but I love the characters and think the story’s pretty fun.)
Honorable mentions: Pinocchio, The Little Mermaid, Peter Pan (my childhood favorite, actually), Lady and the Tramp, Sleeping Beauty, Fantasia, The Fox and the Hound, The Emperor’s New Groove, Lilo & Stitch (the last of which I’ve come to appreciate over the years). But really, I could list most Disney movies as honorable mentions, with a handful I’m not a big fan of but own on DVD anyway. Ha!
Fun fact about me: I can name all of Disney’s animated films in chronological order without skipping a beat, and I don’t use any pneumonic like a song or acronym. The only one that might throw me off is Dinosaur because I don’t really consider it part of Disney’s “canon” but rather a side experiment that may have been thrown into the canon for the sake of awarding Tangled the prestigious #50 title. Maybe. What do I know? Anyway, I’m just that crazy for Disney. <3
