Disney Sequels

Aw, glad you enjoyed it! I didn’t really like it too much on the first watch, but after I watched it again things sortof clicked and it was a really compelling watch. It’s one of those films you learn more about everytime you see it, although you certaintly need a certain degree of intelligence to comprehend the true messages in the story.
But it is probably the most brutal, if thats the right word, in terms of exploiting the real world. But then, in response to Lover_of_Fiction, all Pixar films have personified characters, even if they aren’t human. The ant colony in ABL work like people do, the same with the monsters in MI. The Parrs in The Incredibles are human beings who just happen to be superheroes; one of the best aspects of the film is that they’re relatable and that they feel completely real. So your argument doesn’t really hold up. Sorry.

Okay, Cinderella II sucks, point blank, I don’t see how that’s disputable. The third one is okay, but almost no Disney animated sequel is ever top good. Pixar Builder, I also love all the WTP sequels, though.

And I agree with the general idea here, how can you like Disney sequels and hate Up? That’;s the best joke I’ve heard all day.

I think that, in general, sequels suck compared to the original no matter which way you look at it (with the exception of Toy Story).
Lover_of_Fiction, I’m sure nobody means to come across rude or anything, but do you actually enjoy Pixars films and what they do? Because no offence like, but all your posts seem to be negative about the company’s movies.

I agree with every word in your post. Pixar is the only contemporary company that seems capable of consistently making good sequels.

I don’t think there was ever a Disney Classic sequel (outside of Pixar films) that was really [i:3j8pbx5a]needed[/i:3j8pbx5a]. But I admit I don’t hate the sequels, at least not all of them. In fact, there was a time I really loved just seeing the characters again, no matter the story not being as epic. Now, of course, I can totally tell the first movies were way way better, but there are still some pretty good sequels.

[i:3j8pbx5a]Lilo & Stitch 2: Stitch Has a Glitch[/i:3j8pbx5a] is my all-time favorite Disney sequel. It made me laugh and cry as much as the first, and the story’s not that cheesy. Sure the goodness level vs. badness level thing sounds a little kiddy, but it was from the original, and I think it’s cute, and it is Lilo’s idea anyway. The story actually is surprisingly good. Stitch’s "bad side" taking over, Lilo having to sacrifice a chance of winning the competition to save Stitch (which is a really hard sacrifice considering she seriously could’ve won! :( All the girls scorn her but she’s the only one who truly understood the meaning of the theme!)…it’s a beautiful sequel. :D

[i:3j8pbx5a]The Lion King 1 1/2[/i:3j8pbx5a]: This was actually hilarious, and I liked how I could catch the references to the original. It was funny to see how Timon and Pumbaa met. And it’s nice that they added Simba telling them he "couldn’t have done it without you guys". They finally got some credit! OH and I [i:3j8pbx5a]love[/i:3j8pbx5a] the ending where other Disney characters join in to watch! [to Aladdin & Jasmine on magic carpet]"HEY! Down in front!" Now that was awesome!

[i:3j8pbx5a]The Lion King 2: Simba’s Pride[/i:3j8pbx5a] was pretty good, too. I love how the kept the whole Shakespeare-style story theme going. The only problem I have with it is how any lionesses would side with Scar in the first place. Did the animators not watch the original carefully? Scar treated all the lionesses like dirt and was even okay with starving them- why the heck would any of them want to avenge him? :?
But anyway, pretty good story for a sequel nonetheless.

[i:3j8pbx5a]Bambi 2[/i:3j8pbx5a] actually had great animation (though different compared to the first) and a good story, too, for a midquel. Every time I watched the original Bambi, I had a problem with how right after Bambi’s mother died, it fades to black and just picks up in a happy springtime where Bambi’s grown up. Weird transition.
Well anyway, I nearly cried at this one when Bambi dreamt of his mother. And when he thought he heard her voice but it turned out to be a hunter’s trap…that was heartbreaking. Oh, and I also liked seeing the Great Prince loosen up, and the introduction to Ronno, the stag that competes with Bambi for Faline. Not to mention hearing the voice of Nemo be the voice of Bambi! :) And also how they put effort in getting voice actors that sounded like the originals the best they could.
But I still have several problems with it:
1)After Bambi’s mother dies, in the morning, he’s all cheery to go with his father. Maybe he’s just trying to hide it and move on, since later when he’s alone he remembers, so that’s not too bad, I guess. Just seemed a little too sudden, though.
2) The original movie said the Great Prince was known as the Great Prince because "not one deer as lived half as long". But in the end of this movie, he tells Bambi about when he was his age and first met the mother. I don’t know exactly why, but it sounds like they made him a lot younger here.
3) Ok this is my biggest problem with it. The original had classiclike songs. "Little April Shower" was amazing with Bambi’s first rainstorm. This movie, however, just got pop songs. The lyrics to the songs were good and fitting, but I would’ve preferred they were at the end credits, you know, like how "True to Your Heart" was at the end credits of [i:3j8pbx5a]Mulan[/i:3j8pbx5a]. They should’ve put songs that don’t change the style of the original Bambi.

[i:3j8pbx5a]The Rescuers Down Under[/i:3j8pbx5a]: Well, I haven’t seen this one since [i:3j8pbx5a]forever[/i:3j8pbx5a], but I trust that it’s really good since it’s the only traditionally animated Disney sequel that was theater-worthy. And, it explored Austrailia, which was pretty unique.

[i:3j8pbx5a]Brother Bear 2[/i:3j8pbx5a]: Well it’s mostly the moose that made me like this one. It is nowhere NEAR as powerful and amazing and unique as the first, and it’s pretty cliche to have a sequel that adds a love interest. But I guess the other thing that made me like it was that the struggle of Koda. He needs Kenai to be his brother now, but when Kenai has a chance of going back with his old friend, I can really feel for Koda.

I used to love [i:3j8pbx5a]The Little Mermaid II[/i:3j8pbx5a] as a kid even more than the first. Crazy, I know. Now I like the first a lot better, and Morgana’s just a weird wannabe villain. What else bothers me is that Ariel went through a lot of sacrifice and even pain to transform. Melody, she just got what she wanted just like that. The ending’s a little cheesy, too.
However, I still love Sebastian in here and can still see myself in Melody. So I still somewhat like it.

[i:3j8pbx5a]Retun to Neverland[/i:3j8pbx5a] wasn’t that good, but still a bit okay. I love how the beginning has clouds shape into shadows of the original movie, and bits of the original music to jog our memory. Not to mention how the entrance to Neverland involved a kaleidoscope-ish way with echoes of voices from the original. Now that was cool. :)
I like how they referenced to the "I believe in fairies" thing from the original book, since the first movie didn’t. And I like the setting of Jane having to be sent away with other children during WWII, to make it hard to believe in Neverland for her. And I really like the song "I’ll Try" in the background.
My problems with it are the octopus-thing replacing the crocodile, the Lost Boys (especially Cubby’s deep voice turning all high-pitched here), and…I don’t know, Peter just doesn’t seem as charming as he used to be. Plus, I expected his encounter with a grown-up Wendy to be more dramatic, like he’s in shock, you know. Not like, "Wendy? Oh you changed. Ah, that’s okay. Bye!" :-\

Well there you go.

Nice opinions on all the sequels bdd! I think that Lilo and Stitch 2 was, decent, I really like the Hula competition and learning how Lilo’s mother was a graceful dancer herself. I just love soaking up the Hawaiian theme from any Lilo and Stitch movie!

I have only seen some of the sequels, but there were a few that I liked or at least thought were otherwise decent. I agree with PixarBuilder and IncredigirlVirginia that all of the Winnie the Pooh sequels were good or fair. Pooh has always had a special place in my heart, and I don’t think you can go wrong with his movies, unless maybe you really tried! The Tigger Movie might be my favorite of the sequel bunch (from DisneyToon), but I like Piglet’s Big Movie and Pooh’s Heffalump Movie, and even Pooh’s Grand Adventure. I kept these ones.

I also kept the three Lilo and Stitch ones. The TV series ones are only okay story-wise, but Stitch and his Ohana are still great to watch and I do love the cousins, especially 625 (Reuben)! And Lilo and Stitch 2 grew on me. I think I liked it more after a while; I really respect the darker theme, and again, I just love seeing Stitch in action. It was well-done; it’s also the only DisneyToon movie I remember receiving a PG rating.

Other ones I kept:
The Lion King 1 1/2: I saw TLK 2 a long time ago, but I honestly wasn’t that interested, plus I hadn’t really gotten into the first movie yet. Once I did become a bigger fan of The Lion King, I then bought this one, and I actually liked it. So what if some of it doesn’t make sense? It’s still funny and kind of clever at times.
Kronk’s New Groove: Not the break-out comedy the first one was, but still watchable and I got some laughs from it. The New Groove cast alone is funny so getting to hear more of Kronk was pretty fun.
Brother Bear 2: I’m a fan of the first one, so I expected this to be not as good. Obviously, the first one is better to me, but I still liked this one. It had a good story, and Rutt and Tuke were still just as funny as before (I thought).
Buzz Lightyear of Star Command: My favorite part is the Toy Story part. Yeah…but I don’t think it’s a bad watch. Fairly enjoyable for an hour-long movie.

I didn’t care enough to watch or keep any of the other ones, but I will say that Cinderella 3 is probably quite better than what I expected.

I kind of like Cinderella 3, but that might be because I’m a sucker for time-traveling. :stuck_out_tongue:

I didn’t think it was a good film, but I loved Prince Charming in it, he made that movie. He was so sassy, and I loved when he just ollie outtied through the window.

The only Disney sequels that I think are superior to their predecessors are The Three Caballeros and The Rescuer’s Down Under. I really enjoyed the newest Winnie the Pooh, but I liked the first film better of course.

I don’t think I’ve actually ever liked a sequel better than any of it’s predecessors (aside from Cinderella 3 being better than the second one, neither being really good). I’ve only ever liked a sequel AS MUCH as the others or less but never more, although that’s just me. ‘Never more, never more!’ like from “The Raven” - haha, sorry.

I barely saw The Rescuers Down Under for the first time about a month or two ago. I liked it, but I don’t know that I liked it more than the first one which, itself, I really don’t mind as a movie. I think they are both fine, but I think I’ll consider double-featuring them one day to see what I really think. I haven’t seen The Rescuers for maybe a decade.

I’m not sure if I’ve seen all of Fantasia or just a good majority of it, but I’ve also seen the much shorter Fantasia 2000, each once (consecutively) in the same year. I think I like them both the same even though the first is probably better. They’re both beautiful films with nice little stories from what I remember, but I just like many other Disney movies much more.

If I had to choose between the oldest and the newest Winnie the Pooh film, I guess I would choose the first just because I’ve never liked a sequel more than the first one. But I still really loved it, probably no less than the first, and I think they’ll both equally stay my top favorite Disney films (with Wreck-It Ralph and Snow White) just because I’m a biased Winnie the Pooh fan.

Hmmm, let me think.

None. Though I will admit, I’m guilty of occasionally viewing Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas. Not a sequel though.

To start out, I’m not a huge fan of either Rescuers. But I like the sequel better, probably because growing up I thought it was the original! We only had that one, not the first one. And I wasn’t impressed by the original when I eventually saw it. I liked the Australian setting of Down Under.

As for Fantasia. I think I like both equal. Because there are some segments of the first one that I liked better than some segments in 2000, and visa versa. It depends on the segment for me.

As for The Rescuers movies, that makes sense. They’re not my favorites, but I don’t really mind either of 'em, and I guess the setting of the second one is more interesting. It’s actually a popular consensus, I’ve found.

Basically, I agree about the Fantasia films, though I don’t remember either too well.

I love pieces of Fantasia 2000. But, I hate the other pieces. And I HATE the famous people who introduce the scenes. I turn red when Bette M idler introduces Salvador Dali as the melting clock guy. :imp: Basically it is not nearly as beautiful or inspired as the original to me.

I forgot, I like every Winnie the Pooh, except for the Piglet movie. The songs were annoying and the Tigger movie is sooooooooo much better. <3

^I haven’t seen the Piglet movie! I didn’t mind so much about the celebrity introductions. I mean what was Disney suppose to do? Star power is worth more in producing and financing a film than most people realize, so it just makes sense that they’d do it. It didn’t take away from the film’s enjoyment for me. My favorite segments were the Noah’s Ark with Donald Duck and the Flamingo with a Yo yo.

Yeah, I’m not a fan of either Resucers to begin with, but at least the second one had Australia and the cool Outback mouse.

Talking about The Rescuers and traditionally animated Disney sequels, I watched The Rescuers Down Under back when I was, well, in Down Under the year before last. I think it was a DVD copy I borrowed from the Sydney Customs House library.

Anyway, one of my favourite scenes, was when McLeagh the villain tricks Cody into leading him to Marahute’s nest.

It’s all over, boy. Your bird’s dead. Someone shot her. Shot her, right out of the sky. Bang!
Cody: No!
McLeach: What do you mean no? You calling me a liar?

McLeach comically missing the point made me laugh out loud fo rsome reason (it’s even mentioned as an example of such a trope on TV Tropes).

Joanna is also one of the cutest (and dumbest) bad-guy sidekicks next to Pain and Panic from Hercules and the three hyenas from The Lion King. Frank the frilled lizard is endearing too - I believe Mitch is a huge fan of him (her art, in fact, convinced me to give this film a go).

It’s also great to see the Sydney Opera House being rendered as a 3D model when computer animation was in its infancy. And any scenes of Marahute the eagle is absolutely magnificent.

The only thing I didn’t like was that the creators apparently changed Cody’s ethnicity (he was originally aboriginal) and the ending was rather abrupt. Other than that, it’s worth a lazy weekend morning watch.

Nobody mentions the awesome score from Down Under? One of Disney’s best!

And the flying sequences are HTTYD-level good.

Down Under, in most ways, is better than many Disney originals.

I know why celebrities are on Fantasia 2000, but they still get on ym nerves.

I need to give The Rescuers Down Under a fair re-watch. It was a good sequel visually and had some nice conflicts, even if it wasn’t the best Disney film. And I forgot all about the kangaroo rat!. He’s daring and his accent alone makes him cool. :sunglasses:

Piglet’s Big Movie was decent, I think. I sort of forgot about how it went. The cute characters are back, but it’s actually a lot like a package film in some ways. I’m not sure which I prefer, that one or Pooh’s Heffalump Movie, though neither are super. I agree with IncredigirlVirginia that by far, The Tigger Movie is the best of those three, the must-see of the group.

Oh wow, I did not know that! I will have to rewatch this movie, haven’t seen it since I was an inkling. Oh, and I found out on fanpop that the mouse is Jake. he’s great.
