Disney to remake Beatles' Yellow Submarine

A friend of mine on Facebook posted this. I knew there were plans to remake The Beatles animated Yellow Submarine movie, but I had no idea Disney was involved. I’m not sure how many Beatles fans here are familiar with the movie, but at the moment I’ll keep my opinion on this remake idea to myself.

I don’t really see why this needs a remake, but that’s just me. I’m getting fed up with the amount of remakes that are being churned out; what’s wrong with an original story? What really bugs me is American remakes of horror films. Quarantine seemed to be released less then a year after REC. What is the point in that?

I actually really quite like the original. It has a certain charm about it that, if it is to be remade by Disney, I fear it will lack. I agree with St_Jons, it does seem a bit unnecessary.

I think that this could go many different interesting ways…

Robert Zemeckis is directing. The man hasn’t done anything good for a while, has he?

Cast Away (2000)
The Polar Express (2004)
Beowulf (2007)

No, nothing good since Cast Away. Having watched the Beatles Rock Band opening cinematic, this could be really good. But it’s Mocap, so it’ll probably be really bad.

Yeah, no. LOL, not feeling too hopeful about this one. I love Yellow Submarine the way it is. Maybe I’d have to know more about it. I mean, is the same script/storyline gonna be used? Is it gonna be based on it with lots of new scenes? Be totally different? Plus, who’s doing the voices? I guess I just don’t see the need to remake it…

This is how the meeting went, I bet.

Guy 1: Okay, everybody! We need another remake. Profits are down and there’s nothing like a good ol’ remake to get that cash rolling in!
Guy 2: What if everyone hates it?
Guy 1: Who cares? We’ll make money either way.
Guy 3: Hey! The Beatles are making a comeback! Let’s make A Hard Day’s Night!
Guy 1: No…wait! Let’s make Yellow Submarine! The Beatles were hardly in it to begin with!
Guy 3: Quick! Someone get a phone!

I actually like this idea, except for the Mocap. That just doesn’t seem like a good idea. I like Robert Zemeckis, but he doesn’t seem like a good fit for this kind of movie. Who knows, though? It might turn out good.

Did anyone forget Robert’s directorial debut, I Wanna Hold Your Hand? He used archival footage and stunt doubles to simulate the presence of The Beatles in that film. So, he’s dealt with this king of thing before, and Disney and Apple Corps Ltd. confirmed the remake at the inaugural D23 Expo this past weekend. If anyone’s skeptical, perhaps you should hear what they had to say:

So he’s going to do drugs to simulate the creative forces behind Yellow Submarine.

Hah. Yeah, I heard about this and wasn’t too thrilled. A cheesy remake would be a disgrace to the original, and the original was CLASSIC. So let’s hope they don’t butcher it.

I heard about this a week ago. In a recent interview with Josh Horowitz of MTV, Zemeckis revealed that he has reached out to the two surviving members to star in Yellow Submarine. There’s no word yet on whether they are interested, though.

I’m really skeptical of this idea.

The original movie is a singular creation, and it was made at a particular time of the Beatles’ initial popularity. It simply won’t resonate with audiences of today, no matter how you dress it up. It had a pretty thin plot and story to begin with, and on a remake – who’s the audience for this? Kids? Music lovers? Adults feeling nostalgic about their youth? Teens re-discovering their parents and grandparents’ music? Dunno…

Zemeckis did a fair job on Christmas Carol, but the Mocap stuff is a dead-end for animation. It’s very lifeless.

And in the end of the original, [spoil]the love you take is equal to the love you make[/spoil].

Seriously, though. The one thing that made this movie very special was the guest appearance of the real Beatles at the very end. How are they going to pull that off?

Unless they just reuse the original footage of the Beatles circa 1968 and dress it up with a Magical Mystery background (as was originally intended, until the SFX budget ran out). If they can do that, I’ve got to admit it’s getting better.

The cast has been confirmed:
