In the original treatment, Doc was supposed to have a ‘heart attack’ (presumably an overheated battery), only to be jump-started by Sherriff. What would you have thought if this had been included in the film? I think it would have made what is essentially a feel-good film very heavy-handed and dark. Plus, there doesn’t seem like there would have been a place to include it without shoe-horning it in.
It would of been interesting for sure if that was the case, but I don’t know, I wouldn’t approve of it, a car having a ‘heart attack’ of all things … just don’t seem right But that’s just me, i’m happy the way they left it.
Ehhh…It would have been kinda interesting but kinda hard to deal with IMO.
Kinda glad they left it out of the film…I feel it would have been too tough on little kids to see something like that happen.
I think that would be kind of interesting to see, but it seems like it would take away from the story. Just mentioning that happeend is enough. And I agree with Zenoah, it would be sad to watch if you were a child.
I’m glad they cut it out. It wouldn’t make sense with the plot.
Well if Doc is’nt in the 2nd Movie, they may use this as a way to say why he is’nt around.
That would make sense.
Y’know, I was reading the Art of Cars book last night, and on one piece of concept art by Bob Pauley, it mentioned that Doc’s hood “may have to open to expose engine.” So I think in 2003, when the art was done, they had it in the film, but cut it out between then and 2006, when the film was released.
That makes enough sense for me.
Point. This heart attack idea could be used for Cars 2 to write him out, with poor Paul Newman gone. The following’s just a very long guess. Doc’s coughs are provided by Corey Burton.
[spoiler]I can imagine, before Lightning’s final race, the scene cuts back to Radiator Springs. Doc and Sarge or Sherriff are driving around the town, Doc happy with the returned life to the town. The Delinquent Hot Rods speed by, roughing up the road again. Sherriff takes off to pursue them, but Doc sees the Hot Rods about to hit an oil slick, and they could crash into his home. Enraged, Doc speeds even faster ahead of a surprised Sherriff, and rams into one of the Hot Rods, and they all crash in a pile. Sherriff congratulates Doc on apprehending them, but notices Doc isn’t speaking. Sherriff speeds over, as the Radiator Springs citizens also gather around. Doc begins violently coughing, and smoke billows out of him like a volcano or geyser. A horrified Sherriff calls Mack over for help, and they begin towing the convulsing Doc to his own “hospital”, as the citizens watch in terror.
Lightning and Mater are called, and they race back to Radiator Springs… but it’s too late. Doc dies when Lightning and Mater are able to see him one last time.[/spoiler]
This scene could easily bring Cars 2 up to the dramtic depths that Up and Toy Story 3 set with their own dramatic scenes. Will it happen?
I agree that this could easily fit onto Cars 2.
With TS3 and [spoil]the fire pit of death[/spoil] Im sure they could easily, get away with Doc having a heart attack.
I could see it as a flash back however with no real audio so Doc’s voice would’nt have to be replaced.
Chopperface: That is indeed a great idea, but I’m a little confused about if you’re referring to [spoil]the race from the end of the first film or a race that’s planned for the sequel.[/spoil] Also, how did you decide on Corey Burton for the coughs?
I dunno about the race, I guessed. Lightning’s in a World Grand Prix, so I just assumed there had to be some final, ultimate super race for the world title. I had this guessed scene take place before then, so it’d be more dramatic, and Lightning would be more encouraged to win the race for Doc.
If I am correct, Corey Burton previously voiced Doc in the Race O Rama game. If not, I’m pretty sure good old Burton - who’s voiced so many characters, like Shockwave in Transfomers, Count Dooku in Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Ludwig Von Drake, Captain Hook, etc etc - can do something good for just some Paul Newman-style coughs. If not, maybe Bud Luckey, since he sounds a bit similar to Paul Newman.
Those are ome neat ideas, Chopperface. Peronally, I’d prefer they just left it at, “He’s gone”, like Bo. I’d be a little bothered if Doc had an on-screen heart attack.
And you think Arnold Schwarzenegger as a Hummer H1 is right???
Oh my. I dont think I would have wanted to see that. I’m not sure it would have fit in with the tone of the rest of the film. Unless of course, the tone of the film was different at that stage.
well, lightning mcqueen as a human would had been Owen Wilson in a racing uniform (since he does the voice acting for mcqueen).
I think it would add a lot of drama, but I don’t want Cars to be another TS. We don’t need too much drama. They are talking cars, and if you get too serious, it just gets ridiculous. Just my opinion.
