Dreamworks or Pixar?

I wasn’t sure what section on the forums to put this in but I thought it would fit in with the other animation topics. Well, I’ve been thinking about this for quite some time now but I mentioned on one of the DW’s topics that I would compare similar Pixar and DW’s movies and see which one of those movies I liked better. I’m going to try to keep this short and simple. Keep in mind this is strictly opinion based. Well, lets get started!

  1. A Bug’s Life (Pixar) Vs Antz (DW’s)
As most people probably know by now, I thought that A Bug’s Life was the weakest of the Pixar films. Some people might know that A Bug’s Life is based of The Magnificent Seven and Seven Samurai. It isn’t a bad thing but I think it hurts the writing just a little bit. Antz’s has its own story and I thought it was slightly better then Bug’s Life. The next thing I’m going to talk about is the visual style. The places in Antz looked pretty dull especially inside of the ant hill. I thought that the environments in Bug’s Life looked amazing and it fits in with the characters very good. I’m sure everybody knows by now that the voice cast for Antz was alot better then Bug’s Life. Overall, the winner here is going to DW’s.

  2. Monster’s Inc (Pixar) Vs Monsters vs Aliens (DW’s)
Now Monster’s Inc was an amazing film by Pixar. The characters were alot of fun and the animation was great at the time. It has a pretty strong moral to it which is people may not be as bad as people may think. Monsters Vs Aliens was probably one of the weaker of the DW’s films I’ve seen. Some of these characters in Monsters Vs Aliens were pretty poorly used especially with the cameo by Stephen Colbert. To me, hes a funny guy but he could be pretty annoying sometimes. There was scene where they send him to fight off an alien invasion with 80’s pop music which was stupid. I do admit Monsters Vs Aliens had some pretty funny jokes in there but it wasn’t that good of a movie to me. Meanwhile, Monster’s Inc on the other hand is just a master piece and it’s my favorite non-Toy Story movie Pixar has done. No question, winner is Pixar.

  3. Finding Nemo (Pixar) Vs Shark Tale (DW’s)
This was probably the easiest pick to me. I’ll start with Shark Tale. I thought that it was a fun movie but the characters had no depth to them and the story was basic about a lie gone horribly wrong. Will Smith does play his character well in this movie by reprising his old comedic roll that made him popular from Fresh Prince. Finding Nemo’s character depth was alot better and was a bit funnier in a way. Finding Nemo wasn’t really aimed to be a comedy film as it tries to be a bit serious. I thought that the story was excellent and heartwarming and the visuals were just gorgeous. I’m definitly giving the edge to Finding Nemo. It was a better story and a more beautiful film the Shark Tale. This is basically one of my favorite Pixar movies aganist the worst DW’s movie in my opinion.

  4. Toy Story Series (Pixar) Vs Shrek Series (DW’s)
Now this one is a little bit different. This is going to be a battle between the two film series that made these companies famous. The Toy Story movies are at least in the top 10 as far as animated movies goes. It started with a creative premise, genius writing and very good voices actors like Tom Hanks and Tim Allen. Lets not forget they gave one of the greatest conclusions in cinematic history with TS3. I think its one of the best film series along with Star Wars and The Godfather. Pixar even showed us how impressive TS2 was since they had so little time to work on it. The Shrek series was pretty good especially the second one which was one of the funniest animated movies I’ve seen. I did like the first one as a nice comedic movie to watch on a rainy day. After the first two, these movies went downhill quick. Shrek the Third had some terrible pacing and it was filled with pop-culture jokes which wern’t funny. I thought it was an obvious cash grab when I first saw it. It did advance the story which was nice. Shrek Forever After was a little bit better then Shrek the Third but not as good as the first two. At least it did have some jokes that were pretty funny though. To wrap it up, I’m definitly giving this to Toy Story. This is a battle between one of cinema’s greatest series aganist a series whose premise was stretched a far too thin.

Overall, I’m going with Pixar as the better studio. Don’t get me wrong, I do like some DW’s films but I think Pixar is the better company. DW’s has been impressing me since How to Train Your Dragon last year. Pixar really dropped the ball on alot of fans this year with Cars 2. I did like Cars 2 but it was one of the weaker Pixar films. I’ll wait until I see Puss in Boots to see which company does better this year. There were some couple other films that were similar that I could of talked about like Ratatouille/Flushed Away and The Incredibles/Megamind but I’ve never seen Flushed Away or Megamind. I hope you guys enjoyed this and I hope to hear some feedback or your opinions on DW’s or Pixar movies.

Nice comparisons! I can definitely see where you’re coming from. And to be honest I like DW and Pixar equally and think they’re both just as good but given as this is a Pixar forum I’m sure many of you will disagree with me, heheh. :stuck_out_tongue:

Dreamworks haters kind of make me cry… sure I used to be one sorta but still they have some pretty awesome films people please realize that

Cough(Everyone says Pixar)CoughCough*.

I’m a Pixar gal myself!

To be fair, I’m going to go with Pixar on all 4 of those. I personally think the voice cast in ABL was better than Antz. I found Woody Allen to be rather annoying, and a lot of the other actors didn’t contribute much and seemed to be thrown in there for the sake of selling a film. I think Dave Foley does a great job carrying ABL, and I also think that Kevin Spacey is one of the best character actors in modern cinema and he absolutley rocks in ABL. But Antz was a really good film regardless

Woody Allen is very annoying. I didn’t enjoy Antz at all, but he didn’t help.

I prefer Pixar a little bit more, but right now I love both. If Pixar makes Toy Story 4, I will not like them at all anymore, and Disney or Dreamworks ill be my new favorite.

Dreamworks movies are more varied visually and their lineup of directors is much more diverse than Pixar’s. For the most part I prefer Pixar’s movies though.

I agree. The only way I would like DW more would be if Pixar made a TS4 or any really disappoint(to me) sequels. It looks like they will make TS4 though. :frowning: We’ll see.
