Ed Asner

The lovely old man (a big cranky though  ) who brought Carl to life has been a pretty notable actor for a long time, and I’ve been a fan of him for a while, mostly from Gargoyles, Elf, and of course Mary Tyler Moore. He was the first celebrity I contacted about Up (via facebook), and I pretty much showered him with compliments over it. He responded, thanking me for the compliments.

I’d posted a few more comments on his wall, and discussed a bit with a few of his fans. I sent him a Happy Father’s Day message on his wall as well, and mentioned I wanted to visit Pixar at some point, and I’d like to meet him as well.

Here’s the kicker.

Today, I was chatting with a friend on facebook, and a notification pops up, “Ed Asner has commented on your wall post.” I immediately lost feeling in my legs and checked it.

Here’s the transcript, so to speak

Chris - Happy Father’s Day Ed, still buggin ya about the movie after 3 weeks  Still making trips to the theater, I’ve got number 13 tomorrow, still as amazing as the first trip. God Bless, and stay safe. Hope you enjoyed your Father’s Day!

Oh and another thing, I’m hoping to visit Pixar sometime, I’m hoping to work as an animator there someday (thanks to Up), and would love to get a peek at the minds inside the masterpieces. I’m not sure when I would be able to go, but if I do, it would be my honor to meet you while in California. It’s a pipe dream, sure, but I can dream can’t I?

Thanks Chris. Let me know when you are in town.

I pretty much crapped my pants at this point, I’m still freaking out about it. The people on this movie are really considerate of their fans. DANG I love Pixar. Ed seems like a really wonderful person, I’m incredibly eager to meet him, and his confirmation pretty much just make my MONTH. I HAVE to go to California now!

Ed did a fantastic job with Carl (and he does have like the BEST [spoil]old man scream[/spoil] EVER). Anyone else a fan of the big guy?

I’m not a big fan of his, in fact I never heard of him until Up. But, I do have to say, he did a superb job with Carl. That’s really cool that he sent you a message! I would so love to meet Demi Lovato (I have a celeb crush on her  ) or Lee Unkrich if I ever got the chance, I hope you do get together with him sometime!

Yeah, he’s not in too many major films nowadays. Kind of a shame, considering Carl practically personifies everything about him and most of his roles. If I do ever get to meet him, I’ll be sure to post photos, and every intricate detail of the encounter. I may actually get to go to California around November thanks to my awesome brother, but it’s not set in stone yet. I wanna go SO BAD, and find all the stuff that they put in Up.

He’s a big political buff, and he used to be the head of the Screen Actors Guild. He was also really influential in the writers strike. He’s a busy guy.

If anyone was ever deserving of having a Best Vocal Performance Oscar category created as a result of their work, it is Ed.

Hehe, yeah, there ya go! Quite possibly the best [spoil]old man scream[/spoil] in movie history right there.

How nice of Mr. Asner to write to you personally! That was very sweet of him, and it was equally considerate of you to let him know how much you appreciate his work. I hope that you get the chance to meet him some day!

I believe the only time I ever heard of Ed Asner (before Up was announced) was via my mom. I think she mentioned that he attended an art-/animation-related party that she went to or something. Also, he provided the voice of the owl in the film Happily Ever After, which my parents worked on. Not one of his more notable roles, of course, as the film stinks, but you can view it here if you’d like:

Happily Ever After

Nevertheless, I must concur in that he’s a brilliant actor – one who deserves to be recognized.

Now, see, I whole-heartedly agree here! My sister and I were laughing so hard the first time Carl [spoil]screamed out in terror[/spoil]. Hilarious.

He actually posted today on facebook that he’s up for another Emmy for a guest role in CSI: NY. Hope he gets it, amazing guy. So cranky, but still lovable at the same time (in most of his roles, that is)

He’s a perfect example to act Scrooge. I do not like Jim Carrey as Scrooge.

I think I’d heard of him before the existence of Up, but I don’t really know much about him. That’s cool that he actually replied to your wall post, ffdude1906! Seems like a very nice guy!

I may sound stupid, but…Ed has Facebook!? I don’t know of it?!

And ffdude1906 got a reply by him?! Oh God. Oh my God. (total shock!)

P/S: Okay, okay. I know. I haven’t it yet before posting this reply.

Haha, this was close to 2 and a half months ago, but yeah, he did. I think I went a bit overboard (imagine that) posting as much as I did on his wall, but he was really nice. He was very brief in his responses, which I can imagine is because he is both a busy man, and he can’t get too involved in conversation with as much stuff as he does.

in awe: speechless: with mouth open sooo wide: you get know what I mean: LOL

I guess persistence is the key. Nice scoring of one meet and greet, ffdude!

I just hope I can visit Cali at some point, that’d be amazing. I wanna go SOOOO bad! Too bad I’m officially dirt poor, the only reason I could go buy those books the other day is because my aunt sent me a check for my birthday.

Didn’t know of him until Up. great acting. Definitely a fan of him now. Did anyone watch the Mary Tyler Moore show he is famous for? I never saw it. Hope to see more work from him.

Awesome that he replied to your post. Seems really nice, I wish I could visit him too! Tell us about your trip when you take it. :astonished:
