Yesterday I was playing poker with some family and friends. The game lasted about two hours, I eventually won with a hand of two aces at the end. Poker is my favorite nonelectronic game, and I was wondering what was everyone else’s? Just anything that doesn’t involve a tv screen.
(I used the search tool and didn’t find a thread about this yet, sorry if there is)
Back in the good ol’ days, before there were such things as “computer games”, all that my family and I used to play were board games. My all-time favorite of these was Chess, and it remains so to this day. However, I’ll pretty much play any board game as long as my opponent(s) is/are fiercely competitive.
I enjoy playing chess. I got a Lord of the Rings chess set made by my 6th grade teacher. It’s pretty sweet. I also enjoying playing any kind of trivia game.
There’s one board game that will forever be my favorite: The Settlers of Catan. If you guys ever get a chance to play, DO IT. It may take some getting used to, but once you get the jist of things, you’ll be begging for bricks and sheep in no time.
Also, they came out with Catan on the Xbox Arcade, but in my opinion, it’s way to hasty.
DocKenobi: I love playing Yahtzee too! I forgot about it in my last post. I play it all the time with my grandma and mom so the game is full of wonderful memories.
I enjoy Scrabble and Monopoly, or Chinese Checkers sometimes as well. Haven’t played any of those games in a while, though. As for card games, I really like…uh, it has many different names, but the word me and my friends call it is probably sensored on here. I can’t remember any alternative names, but the cards are dealt and you have to try and get rid of your cards by lying about what you’ve got or something along those lines. And then you scream said swear word out if you think someone is lying. It’s a good game!
I mostly play solitare, texas hold 'em, and monopoly. But I’ve only finished about 6 monopoly games. Most games I play end with someone standing up and yelling “You know what?! Forget all of you and forget this stupid game!”, then they flip up the board and chance cards and hotels fly all over the room while the stomp off somewhere.
Monopoly. I use the same strategy every single time and usually win. The downside is it can take hours to play if you have a lot of participants. I’d love to play Cluedo (aka Clue in the States) and Uno is always pretty fun.
I know, right? The least they can do is continue playing an extra 5 mins until they go bankrupt so I can have the satisfaction of winning.
I used to play more board games a few years ago. My family’s got Scrabble and Monopoly boards. We never finished a game, but it was great fun. I also recall playing the Harry Potter Diagon Alley Board Game (it’s like a mix between Airport and Snakes and Ladders) with my siblings a lot. I tried English Chess and Dai Di, or commonly known as Deuces or Chinese Poker (Would that be the card game lizardgirl was describing?) but I suck at them.
I used to play a newer version of Rock Em Sock Em Robots when I was young called Karate Fighters. Except instead of the head bopping up, you win when your opponent’s figure falls off the knob on which his foot pivots on.
I used to be good at Jenga, or at least I think I am. I also played RIsk last year for the first time with a couple of mates and I think I was the second to lose (or win? I forgot).
Ooh, I want to learn Texas Hold 'Em so I can wear like a tux and play like Bond in Casino Royale. Yeah, lame fantasy, I know. Sweeps chips and tosses cards onto table “All in!” How awesome would that be?
Sounds interesting. I read its Wiki and it sounds like an RPG to me.
thedriveintheatre - My Monopoly tactic? If I told you, I’d have to kill you. Well, it basically just involves buying the two cheapest properties and then buying houses for them and eventually hotels. And also the four railroads, and, if I have enough money, the Electricity Company and Water Works. I’m sure everyone uses that strategy, though.
Rachel: That is a god strategy. BUt I know a better one. I can verify because my twin brother used this to beat me every time. The most important color to have on the monopoly board is orange. You have all of the orange property, your chances of winnig increase. THe reason why is because when your opponent goes to jail, after getting out, he has to pass the pink-orange-red area. There is a really good chance that the number he/she rolls from jail will land on an orange spot.
It’s the best of many great word games I am now addicted. Boggle was my first great love and is by far the best. deluxe is 5x5 instead of the usual 4x4. because of this, I usually play for words 5 letters or more.
