Everybody has their favoirite movie, but
what about sequel? Surely there must be one that you love more than the original.

Toy Story
2 is the best sequel to date. It sustained the magic of the first Toy
Story even with new characters and old characters who have had a change of heart.
Leave it
to Pixar to pull off a perfect sequel. ![]()
~~=oP
I second Toy Story 2, along with Star Trek
II, Terminator 2 and Spider-Man 2.
I agree with both of you PV and RMSO. Toy
Story 2 and Spider-Man 2 are the best sequels ever. Toy Story 2 is my 2nd favorite Pixar film to this date.
Spider-Man 2 was better then Spider-Man 1.
Nice post, The Star Swordsman. ![]()
Here are my “nominations”,
in order:
1. The Empire Strikes Back - This has to be
the most fantastic and successful sequel to date, besides Toy Story
2. Perhaps it’s just because I’m a huge Star Wars fan, but this
film just tops the list.
2. Toy Story 2 - What can I say? Pixar was behind
the film, but the movie was wonderful in itself. With well-timed humor and an astounding story-line to back it
up, Toy Story 2 is just one number short of being my favorite sequel in the
universe.
3. Spider-man 2 - I have to agree with PixarVixen, RMS Oceanic, and
JV IS TIZZ!!! concerning this nomination. I was rather surprised that this filmed turned out so good. I guess I
shouldn’t be – it was great!
There you have it. ![]()
The thing about
SW:TESB, is that sequal was pre-planned. When considering sequels, I don’t consider those that were planned to
be created, whether or not the original was successful. I usually only consider sequels that were spawned by the
success of the original. Otherwise I’d include Empire Strikes Back, Two Towers and Back to the Future II.
Hmm…If I’m honest,
no sequels, apart from TS2, come to mind as being better than the original. I haven’t really seen many
sequels.
RMS - Oh yeah – I never
thought about it that way. Well, perhaps it could be considered a sort of…“side-sequel”, in that
case. Yes, it was pre-planned, but it still succeeds the first Star Wars film that
was created (“New Hope”), so in a sense, it is legal to include it as a sequel. Then again, maybe
not…
I like Spinder Man 2, Rush
Hour 2, TS2, and I fogot to mention a couple.
I’m with
Mitch on this one. I mean, the whole 9-movie saga was penciled in from the start, but the end product is
actually quite different from Lucas’ original scribblings. And they definitely made the first one so that there
wouldn’t have to be a sequel if it totally flopped. But think about what his original 7, 8, and 9 plans may
have been, and then consider what the Legacy of the Force series is about (for those
who aren’t as obsessive as I am, Lucas has basically said that the LOTF series will replace a set of films for
the final trilogy). It follows on thirty five years of history in the SW universe, and that’s information that
didn’t exist when he originally planned the trilogy. So even though you could say it was planned a long time
ago, it’s still its own creation apart from the other books/films/whatever.
That being said, I love The
Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. I must confess, ROTJ is my favourite, probably because I saw it
first.
Hm,
that’s a tough one. I can’t really agree with some people who thought Spiderman 2 was better than the first…
man, I hated that sequel. ![]()
Toy Story 2 was wonderful, but I still liked the first one more.
Oh,
wait… I know! Rush Hour 2! ![]()
My Favorite sequel is The Matrix Reloaded.
Going back to the Star Wars sequels/prequels, I
think the last three are good. The first three wasn’t.
DWH - Thank you for backing me up, my fellow
Star Wars fan! ![]()
Yes, I agree with you there. The preceeding films after
A New Hope succeed the original, former fourth movie which was released first, so
technically, episodes I-III, V, and VI are sequels.
However, I suppose that episode IV could be a sequel unto
itself, as it is the fourth film in a six-part series of films. Heheh…
And now I suppose that I should
get back on-topic… ![]()
I thought the effects and the acting was better in the IV-VI movies.
If there’s one thing I will give the Star Wars prequels, it’s that they’re
visually gorgeous. The OT is a lot more inventive, due to technology limitations, but the visual effects in the
PT really are beautiful. If all you were looking at was a bunch of screenshots, I think that would improve the
overall experience with the prequels.
The Star Wars prequels were disappointing. Except for the first 23
minutes + last half hour of Revenge of the Sith. Those were pretty good.
I certainly was not disappointed with
any of the prequels. I honestly thought each were as good as each other, and that they were just as good as the
original trilogy (ergo, all six Star Wars movies are equally brilliant, in my humble
opinion). I can understand why many people were disappointed with the prequels (e.g., acting wasn’t top notch,
screenplay can be improved, etc.). Before, when confronted with this issue, I used to give the reasoning that I
view the Star Wars saga as one whole movie divided into six parts, instead of six
different movies that make up an entire saga (there is a difference). Now that I’ve
seen each of the Star Wars films a lot of times (and I mean a
whole lot), I realize that, although the reasoning that I mentioned still holds
true, the six films are each masterpieces in their own right. I am not necessarily able to relate with the
characters, but I can understand why the characters do what they do. In addition, there are certain themes
(mythical or otherwise) that run throughout each movie that I thought were so flawlessly incorporated. And of
course, I also thought they were extremely fun to watch
.
Quite frankly, the elements that many people
found annoying in the prequels were, for me, not obtrusive at all. And yes, that includes Jar Jar. It’s quite
peculiar, actually, since I usually take notice of horrible acting and bad screenplays in movies (which I guess
is why a lot of Oscar-nominated or Oscar-winning movies made it to my list of top films). In the end, I really
cannot explain each and every reason that I love the six Star Wars films so much. I
guess that’s how points of view work.
As a side note, this is probably the very first movie review that
I’ve ever written (however concise it may be
). The thing is, it’s rather difficult for me to express, in
words, why I love certain movies, because I don’t simply look at individual movie elements like acting or
screenplays (although they certainly do have a bearing in my viewing experience). Having said that, when I adore
a certain film, I guess I can simply say that I loved it because it gave me a sort of feeling of elation or
“push”, which I sometimes call an umph (and I mean that in a good way -
not the way that dictionary.com defines it
). As a matter of fact, the movies that give me not just a push,
but also an extra “push” are the ones that make it to my list of top films. So you can just imagine how
much of a “push” the six Star Wars films gave me, being the Top 1 films
that they are.
Anyway, I didn’t mean to be off-topic, but I just wanted to express my opinion. As for the
best sequels ever made? Well, the Star Wars sequels and prequels are obviously one
of my answers (otherwise, my post wouldn’t be as lengthy as this). Toy Story 2 is
another obvious one. The first two sequels to Home Alone - Home Alone
2: Lost in New York and Home Alone 3 - were brilliant, in my opinion
(although Home Alone 4 was really bad). Babe: Pig in the
City was also spectacular, and it was just as good as the original
Babe.
Believe it or not, I have not seen any of
the three The Lord of the Rings movies, nor have I seen any movie from
The Godfather trilogy. I’m looking forward to seeing them though, after hearing
such great things about them.
Oh, and I must mention that it’s nice to encounter another Star
Wars fan in these forums, DWH ![]()
I guess we Star Wars fanboys
(and fangirls, for the sake of political correctness) are beginning to use Pixar Planet as a haven for discussion
whenever there isn’t much going on in the Star Wars message boards. Heh… I kid, I
kid ![]()
Pirates of the Caribbean 2.
I don’t know if it’s better than the first, but it’s my favorite sequel out there… and I personally
love it!
Are there any sequels right now out there that you guys are excited about?
