I don’t play as many video games as I’d like to, but here are my favourite soundtracks:
Mafia: City of Lost Heaven is my favourite game of all-time, and it has one of my most loved soundtracks too. Here’s a sampler:
Mafia: City of Lost Heaven Main Theme - Simply magnificent orchestral music that just sweeps you into the game’s epic scale.
Lordz of Brookyln- Lake of Fire - “Where the gangsters go when they die? They don’t go to heaven where the angels fly…”
Louis Prima - I’m Leaving In A Great Big Way - Great swing number, and quite catchy to sing to.
I’ve never played any of the MGS games, but I’m a big fan of Harry Gregson Williams and the soundtracks are seriously awesome.
Metal Gear Solid 2 Theme - This is my favourite of all the themes, because it was the very first track I heard when my friend introduced me to the series.
Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater Theme - This one’s pretty exhilarating too. I love the bit from 3:18 - 4:13.
Metal Gear Solid 4 Desperate Chase Theme - Fast-paced and pulse-racing, and when the French Horns come in at 1:38, just beautiful.
I also love playing Halo 3 and just immersing myself in its epic music. Here are some of my picks:
Main Menu Theme - Ah, the church choir in the background as you turn on the game… quite haunting.
Greatest Journey - The final mission music, where the whole Covenant collapses around you and you’re driving in that puny Warthog, this is the melody that will be ringing in your ears…
Never Forget - My favourite theme of all. The piano playing, the violin strings… all combine to create one of the most powerful and poignant pieces of the entire soundtrack.
It might be either Force Your Way (every boss battle), Premoniton (fight against Edea), The Legendary Beast (fight against Ultimecia, Phase one), Maybe I’m A Lion (same fight, Phase two and three) or The Extreme (last phase of the Ultimecia fight)
My personal favorites:
Basically everything from Final Fantasy VIII and all Kingdom Hearts
And also, in no particular order:
Outrun - Passing Breeze - Classic! Remember always playing this game at the Spaghetti Warehouse downtown as a kid.
Doom - Waiting for Romero to Play - Another game where every song is fantastic. Really helped add to the amazing atmosphere of the game. I still get goosebumps when playing in the dark late at night.
Goldeneye - So memeorable. Would sit around with friends for hours and play.
Jet Set Radio - Let Mom Sleep - And again, every song is great on this game. And every song was pretty different and distinct too.
Sonic 2 - Chemical Hill Zone - So darn catchy.
Grim Fandango - The entire soundtrack (and game) is a work of art! There’s this great art deco style with Mayan and Aztec design elements and a fantastic jazzy soundtrack. You can get the whole thing here.
Metroid 2 ending - Really, all the Metroid music is fantastic, especially Super Metroid. This was the game I played the most though. I would always play through the end just to be able to sit and listen to the end credit song (at about 7:30 in the video)
Toejam & Earl - Toejam Slowjam - Not only an extremely innovative game but maybe one of the first games to have “hip-hop” in the soundtrack.
There’s so many more too. Bioshock has an amazing soundtrack. The tinny echo effect is so creepy. The NES Ducktales, and Zelda need mention at least.
The music from the Phoenix Wright games is awesome, I’ve got all 4 soundtracks in my itunes. If I had to pick a favourite I would have to say either Godot’s Theme: Fragance of Dark Coffee or Cornered.
I also love the Mario Galaxy orchestral score and the remixes Nintendo did for Smash Bros Brawl, specifically the Zelda medley.
Fett101 that goldeneye video brought so many memories rushing back!
I don’t really play a lot of video games anymore but the music I can remember most is from Zelda: The Ocaraine of Time and Age of Empires 2.
That and the sound effects in Roller Coaster Tycoon are pretty memorable

Interesting idea for a thread, Peter! I love it when the music of a video game is really good- it adds something to the feeling, the atmosphere of the game.
One of my favourite ‘soundtracks’ for a game, as such, has to be for Rayman, mainly because it’s so epic and whenever I hear it, it evokes memories of my childhood. The same can be said for the music from Little Big Adventure 2, the music of which I’ve purposely downloaded onto my iPod as it’s just so good.
As for a more recent game, both the Uncharteds have great soundtracks, and I love the main theme from the games.
