ffdude1906's art

Yeah, I suppose. I don’t have a tablet or anything, but I do have PS, I just need to get it scanned, that photo doesn’t do it justice.

I’m thinking I’ll start doing Russell at some point in the next few days. He’s gonna be a bit harder, I have trouble with round shapes, and he’s got SO MUCH GEAR. If anything like what happened last night happens again, I’m really excited to see what I can do. Plus, his badges are gonna be tough to draw, especially if I go too small.

Last night I was goofing around a bit with Illustrator, I just got the program so Im still learning how to use the program…
Anyway I saw your picture and thought it would be a great way to practice my lineart a bit, so Itook your pic and made a lineart out of it.

Hope you dont mind tough…

Very cool rendering of Carl, ffdude1906  ! I’m particularly impressed with the face and hair, not to mention how you’ve drawn him slouching just right. Looks AWESOME <img src=“{SMILIES_PATH}/grinandwink.gif” alt=“;-D” title="Grin and

Wink" /> !

That was good of you to say. He’s the One that gives us talent. Where would we be without Him?

Well… if you’re afraid you’ll mess it up, but you’d still like to try coloring it, my advice would be to take a second piece of paper, and trace it. Then color that. I’ve done that with my pics to get more for my effort, but it’s not a bad idea ether if you want to practice without having to do something all over again. (Note: if you do trace it, trace lightly, or you could end up with indentations on the original.)

I’m also impressed with the line art that Vekoma did. Very nice  . I’d like to see that colored.

Not at all Vekoma (any chance that name is based on the coaster company? :stuck_out_tongue: ) I’m honored that you’d use my pic as inspiration, really I am. Also, that line art looks great! Can’t wait to see the finished product.

Thanks to you too Violet, I really do feel blessed about that drawing. I’m wanting to get it scanned, so I can get it up with better quality. Also, I may try to trace it and do some color at some point, good idea.

I’m wanting to start a pic of Russell tomorrow, I need something constructive to do til I have to go to work. I’ll try to get a scene together at some point as well.

Do you guys think I should draw the rest of the scene with Carl? It’s just a thought, it’ll just be the furniture and stuff, but it’s worth a shot.

I dont think I am going to color it, I got a ton of work still lying around to be coloured, but with the lineart I made it should be easy to digitally colour it now? You said you had photoshop so why dont you give it a try?

And yes my name comes from the Dutch Coaster factory, I’m a major fan of them for a long time and even been in the factory and such (but thats a story for a other time)

Little fun trivia did you know that Vekoma made the Rock and Rollerocaster? (in florida AND Paris)

Hehe, yeah, I’m pretty much aware of every coaster-related piece of news, you should meet my brother. He’s OBSESSED with coasters. That’s really cool that you’ve been in their factory and stuff. It does seem a bit odd that you’d pick Vekoma though, when Arrow was in business, they had practically identical coasters (in terms of structure and track style) and I think that Arrow had better coasters. It’s a real shame that they went out of business, but at least they got X done before then.

Bah, huge off-topic post

Anyway, I might go at that in PS sometime, idk when. Need to get crackin on Russell today!

I was working on the pic of Russell when he’s standing on Carl’s porch with the W-E guide, but he’s got SO MUCH GEAR. It became a bit overbearing,

I’m working on another pic of him now, it’s the part in the Snipe Trap Upisode where he’s putting the chocolate bar in the trap. I’ve got his head and sash done, my progress can be seen on my dA page I just got up. I’m drawing him awfully small, what I have is only about 3 inches tall,… I need to work on that

EDIT: He’s done! Tell me what you guys think!

I’ll be posting my art there now. I’m really wanting to get higher quality pics of them though, but I don’t have access to a scanner or a good camera. I’ll have to settle with orange-ish tints from the lighting for now, bleck

On another note, I’m thinking that I might draw a GIANT version of Carl somewhere, with sidewalk chalk, that’d be a cool project to work on for a day. It’s actually pretty neat, on opening night for Up, my theater had sidewalk chalk drawings outside of balloons and the Up logo. A bit of it is still there actually, but barely visible, it’s pretty neat.

Anyway, if I get around to finding a good place to draw a giant sidewalk Carl, you guys will be the first to know, I’m kinda excited talking about it!

Russell looks cute! You added some nice detail including all his badges.

I will give you some critique though: The arms and legs look a bit off, especially the legs. I know they are at a really weird angle which makes drawing them tough, especially since it includes some foreshortening which can be difficult. I struggle with it myself. I’ll give you a look into the very beginning stages when I draw. I took a screen cap of the scene you drew as reference. A tip from one of my teachers is to start with the angles so I start out getting all the angles down (black lines); either eyeing the angles and using a pencil to “grab” the angle (hold the pencil out in front of you and line the pencil with the angle and you have the angle you need). Then I go over those lines to get the basis form down (red lines) before starting to flush out the drawing.

Hope this made sense and helps.

Wow, thanks a ton for that Hannamation, absolutely awesome advice. I don’t draw with conventional means, I never really learned how to. That’s probably why I struggle so much with drawing freehand. I never really used the whole outlining thing, which is a bad habit, I know.

I pretty much just moved from his hat down, going from detail to detail. I’m sure some stuff came out really sketchy as a result, and I also think that the arms and legs had problems. I must have redone the legs like 6 or 7 times. I’ll try working on that in the future.

I really appreciate you going to the trouble of showing me your process, and I’m really grateful for the advice, thanks a ton! I’m sure it will help me improve quite a bit.

You are very welcome, ffdude1906. Happy to help.

Nice drawings of Russell and Carl there, ffdude1906, you have some drawing talent there. They resemble their movie selves very much so, so you could be assured that your place is more on drawing than Photoshopping.

Keep the good work, dude!

Thanks a lot Gemini, but there is something I must point out. My general drawing method/style is too unconventional to be useful for creating new stuff, what I’ve got of Carl and Russell looks great, sure, but drawing them from memory would have looked entirely different. I need to work on drawing from memory, creating new poses, changing details, and learning how to become a better artist in general.

When I had done that photoshop image, I only had PS for about a week, and I had never used it before. I’m taking a PS class over the summer, and a friend of mine is an expert with it. (he’ll be the one teaching me actually,…). I also need to take some digital media and comprehensive drawing classes. I’m getting pretty excited about this!

Anyway, I have potential talent in both fields, it’s just which one I improve more that helps me decide my specific degree or whatever. I’m also really new at making drawings that look this good, my other stuff is garbage in comparison. I’ve got a lot of practicing to do!

Again, thanks for the comments, I’ll try my best to keep my submissions of the utmost quality! I may finally be getting scans of my stuff soon!

That’s a really good sketch of Russell, ffdude1906! Your attention to detail is great, and though I do agree with Hannahmation’s constructive criticism, you’ve definitely got the skills to become a great sketch artist. As Gemini said, when you draw the characters you have the ability to make them look so much like they are in the movie. But it’s good that you’re keeping your options open as well- there’s no rule that says you can only be good at one type of art! I look forward to seeing your next piece of artwork.

I just got a really cool idea for a drawing I wanna do. I was thinking about ‘what if there was a Pixar Kingdom Hearts?’ as in, a Kingdom Hearts game set only in Pixar movies. I think it’d be a great idea, and I started getting this idea for an epic crossover picture. I’ll probably start working on it pretty soon, I’m pretty excited about this. I expect this picture to take a LOOOONG time, like somewhere around 4 or 5 days of work. I’ll be posting my progress though, hopefully I can get something done before I go to work tonight. Wish me luck! ^^

EDIT: Ok, well I’ve managed to start the angles and stuff for this, I may or may not have to redo this, I don’t know yet, too soon to tell. I can use this as a baseboard for the final drawing if I end up redoing it. It’s awfully small, but it kinda needs to be in order to get the whole drawing. There’s gonna be quite a bit of the shadow heartless, and I may draw a few characters that have been captured if I’m feeling ambitious enough. This is only about 30 minutes of work, I had a lot of trouble with Carl’s head, I didnt have any sort of reference for him. His body is also a bit off.

Sorry for the TERRIBLE quality, I still cant get my dad to show me how to use his scanner, he’s got some really stupid program on his computer for it.

A Pixar Kingdom Hearts piece huh ffdude? That sounds epic. I can’t wait to see it. Good luck with it.

Gah, I might have to postpone this, I’m having a lot of difficulty getting the characters to come out right. I think I just need to focus on the fundamentals for now. My big issues with basic shapes are mainly with round shapes, which is probably why Carl came out so well. He’s very rectangular, so it’s a bit easier to get his features down for me. I need to find some stuff that’s easier to work on, Carl was, like I said before, a miracle. I never really learned a structured way to draw, so I’m probably just gonna work on some simple stuff, characters like Mike Wazowski, Carl, Kevin, EVE, etc.

I’m gonna try to talk with my bro-in-law’s mom about this stuff, she’s an art teacher, and a really great one at that, so maybe I could have her tutor me with this stuff. My method for Carl was just ridiculous, and it turned out way better than it should have. I just moved from his right hand, up to his head, did his hair, face, then down his shirt and pants, then his left hand. I’d go as far to say I did it the WRONG way, if such a way exists, but it still came out remarkably well. I guess results don’t lie, but like I said, miracle. My mom described it as “drawing it like a scanner”, going from one side to the other.

Anyway, I’ll keep this thread updated on how my art is going, I’m just unsure what to do right now. I wanna get something done, but I want to learn how to do it in a good, consistent way. My KH pic is gonna have to wait, it’s a pipe dream. Maybe when I get better at this stuff, I’ll be able to draw it, and it’ll turn out better than I expected.

SUPER IMPORTANT EDIT! : I finally managed to get my dad’s scanner working, and it’s INCREDIBLE. I’m reuploading my pics, please check them out!

Yeah, drawing body bit by body bit is another bad habit of mine when I just doodle (I always start with the eyes and end with the feet, heh heh), which is why when I do actual artwork I would be proud to show off, I force myself to draw the figure and ‘spine’ shapes first in one shot, rather than start detailing straight away. Anyway, it’s interesting to read about your conscious efforts at self-improvement at your art. I’m sure that creating fanart will help occupy your mind while waiting for Up’s DVD release.

Oh, and I noticed Eve in your Kingdom Hearts outline sketch. Can’t wait to see the final result - we have a few K.H. fans here, so you might win some for your art.

So, to commemorate Up’s success, I decided to finally do something for the last day. I basically just went at an old white T-Shirt with a sharpie, and here’s what I got!

I’m happy with it. I’m also thinking about tying 25 helium filled balloons to my car while I’m in the theater. I’ll have pics up at the end of the day, it’s gonna be nuts!

Cool shirt, ffdude1906! I can imagine a lot of shocked faces as you walked into the cinema. And I’m looking forward to seeing those photos- the idea of tying a bunch of helium balloons to your car is awesome.

ffdude1906: 25 times huh? Well, that is the most of anyone I know so far. Sweet shirt, simple but sweet.
