Man, it’s been WAY too long since I’ve drawn something. Started this up in class the other day, turned out pretty sweet if I do say so myself (and I DO )
Voila! I give you, M-O!

Wow, I can honestly say that that is the BEST drawing you’ve done so far (and not just because it’s WALL•E fanart and I happen to be a bit biased sometimes ). Like, the anatomy of M-O is dead-on, and the shading totally blew me away - I mean, you have come a long way, and it looks wonderful! I don’t know why you’re complaining about his roller brush, because I think it looks fine.
Aaah, I gotta get on dA now and fave this!! Love, love, LOVE it!!!
little chef
Haha, wow, thanks a ton little_chef, big deal coming from you! I think this is one of my better drawings as well. Interesting, considering I’ve only finished 2 drawings since my Maxwell drawing.
Thanks again!
My oh my. That’s a great drawing! So far this is the best! Nice job, dude! I love the shading technique!
I love this piece of yours, Chris! You have come so far since I first met you. M-O is spot on and the shading is just wondering. Keep at it!
Finally, a new piece done. I haven’t drawn in forever, and I think this is my new best. Geez,…
This was made as a birthday gift to Michael Frederickson, and as a way of saying thanks for the stuff he sent.
I saw this on Twitter earlier. I definitely think it is your best piece to date. It looks really wonderful! The proportions and angles all look right and the shading is great! Nicely done!
Grab your scarf and goggles guys, this puts my gift to Michael to shame.

Took me FOR-E-VER to finish, and I’m totally stoked with how it turned out, especially Carl. Whaddaya think?
That’s cool, I love that part xD I like how you did Carl.
Thanks a lot Badger, I appreciate it!
Just working a bit on Bryko614’s Christmas commission, here’s the fruits of my efforts so far. It pretty much trumps everything I’ve done so far. The hair could be a bit better, and the glasses aren’t perfect, but I’m more than satisfied with what I got. More work tomorrow!
Well, to say that you’ve been improving lately is an understatement, ffdude1906! Your sense of proportion and your sensitivity to lighting and shading is getting brilliant, and you’re really capturing the likeness of the characters. Your latest piece in progress shows this very well, and you’re paying attention to detail. I agree with you that the hair looks a little flat, but hair is a difficult thing to get right and it still looks fine in the context of the picture. Looking forward to see this one completed!
Dude, even when it’s not finished it looks AMAZING! I wonder how it’ll look when it’s finished… even more awesomer, perhaps?
Keep it up!
Wow, thank you so much lizardgirl, I just hope I can really start making some good original stuff soon. My art professor’s been really supportive, and he said that life drawing is gonna take me really far, so I’m stoked for that.
You guys can check it again for a small update, I’m like 99% done with Carl now. My favorite part is his shirt and tie, I’m super proud of it. (took me like an hour!) His jacket is way hard, I’m not so up to fiddling with it. Still, it’s not terrible. Anyway, this should be done soon!
Wow, ffdude1906 ! Carl looks awesome! You’re doing great so far ! Keep it Up !
Yes, I can see how you put so much time into the shirt and tie- the texturing there is beautiful. Very, very good work, ffdude1906. And it’s cool that your Art Professor has been supportive- that’s just what you need, a good mentor to keep you improving your art and putting you on the right track. If only my old art teachers were as good.
Thanks a ton lizardgirl! I really appreciate it!
Bryko’s commission is finally done! I finally sat my lazy butt down and got it finished. Hope you enjoy it buddy! Merry Christmas!
EDIT: Okay, so I was gonna replace the finished page with the WIP and re-upload the final so it’d update people’s messages saying it’s finished, but I forgot one thing. I don’t have a finished scan on this computer! Oops! It’ll be back up again soon. My bad!
Well, I’ve initiated myself t start a drawing challenge. 99 of them to be precise. Got a small sketch pad, and I’m gonna be doing 99 different characters over the next month or so. The plan is to do it before my trip to California. So far, I’ve done Puck from Gargoyles, Frozone, and Randall. I’ll have these posted up on dA at some point, but for now, it’s all on my TwitPic.
Got a TON more to do, so if you’re interested, stick around! My full character list (with some potential changes down the line, depends) is on a dA journal I just put up last night. You can check it there if you’re curious.
Enjoy!
ffdude;
I read through these pages and looked at the work you linked! It really shows your passion for the material, and the hard work you have put in aws well. Though it looks great, I think that if you went through the process of constructing your figures from more basic shapes you work would improve by leaps and bounds! You ARE improving, but I fear that without a strong grounding in the foundations you are doing yourself and your work a disservice. I have spent many dollars and hours gathering every printed work about the process of animation I can get my hands on, and a recurring thread in all of them is to master the foundations of drawing:
Form
Volume
perspective
composition
shading
style
note that each builds on the other insequence. it is like skating, or music. You spend the time and do the work to learn the basics, and one day you find that you don’t think about basics anymore, you just do them and then your own style starts to flower. Though I can see your style is pretty well defined already!
Take a look at this site. Chuck Redux, managed by the daughter of Chuck Jones, an undisputed master of animation. This site shows many of his drawings of his famous Warner Bros. characters. Not to mention it is a REAL treat for any fan of animation. Note especially the obvious construction or underdrawing that Chuck does. Even the masters still use the foundations, even if they don’t think about it!

Here is a link to some of my old work floating around on the web. You decide if it gives the above any more “cred” or not

Finally, where are your own characters? If you want to work at Pixar like I do, you need to show that you can develop characters as unique as our old friend Carl
I hope this helps!
Much obliged sir! I’ll most definitely have to look at that! I seriously appreciate the encouragement.
I’m actually taking a life drawing class right now, and it’s really helping me out a lot. I’m still dipping my toe into this whole thing, so I’ve really only gone from reference so far. I’m actually gonna take another year of classes here in my town to develop a portfolio for an art school, so I’ll hopefully be much more developed by the time I get there. And yeah, I know, I know, I need to work on original work, I’m just so incredibly reluctant, and I’m not in the habit of drawing a lot yet (and I’m SERIOUSLY bugged about that. I need to get my butt in gear!)
Thanks a lot for the pointers, I’ll try to do what I can. It’s just gonna take some knuckling down on my part, which is something I’m not very used to. However, the passion is in me somewhere, I just gotta take hold of it!
a life drawing class you say? That makes me feel much better! Life drawing teaches the foundations almost without a student knowing it with a proper instructor. Consider a figure drawing class as well. The human form is the single hardest subject to master, and in reality one never really masters it, but the journey is the thing. When you get to the point where just by the right lines, muscles, bones, veins, ligaments and most importantly movement are clear, it is such a rush. Keep it up! I have the same problem with motivation at times. it seems like such a chore to get started (even though it is not). When I do however, I have been known to have hours pass that seem like minutes, with my wife gently reminding me of the late hour. What I do is just repeat that it takes longer to make a sandwich than to set up to draw, and is not your passion with that time? I mean sandwiches a good and all but sheesh!
Lol! babbling now, Keep it up and lets see MORE!
