ffdude: those are amazing. i can’t wait to see the rest of them!
Hm… was this artpiece inspired by my ‘Russell and Remy’ work? Regardless, I like your spin on it! If there’s any constructive criticism I can give, is that Russell’s eyes look a bit weird, and that Remy looks more like a ferret than a mouse (elongated torso). Wait, that didn’t sound right…
No, really, besides that, it looks great! Love the little dialogue you wrote in the pic description.
Dug pic is okay, I like the details you did on the translator collar. But once again, the eyes look a bit ‘creepy’. It’s a trouble I am also struggling with in my art, so I take the ‘easy way out’ and ‘dot’ them Martin Brown-style. So I should really be commending your courage in attempting to draw in the irises. Just keep practicing, and I’m sure you’ll get better!
Now, the Carl progression drawings look way better, and are your best to date! They can almost pass off as a Pixarian’s doodles! I like how you captured his ‘goofy-look’ in his early childhood years. The fact that you drew this by eye (I assume you didn’t trace?) is astounding! I would take a considerably longer time…
I think you’re getting better at drawing! Keep practicing, keep improving talks to self (Yeah, TDIT, that sounds rich coming from an armchair critic who hasn’t drawn for weeks, you lazy fan-artist… )!
Thanks for the critique TDIT, any advice is appreciated. I think Carl at 8 looks a bit funny, I think because the eyes are too close together, I nailed it on age 5. The drawings in the book are too small to trace too well, so yeah, I’m pretty much forced to do this by eye. I don’t much care for tracing anyway. I just finished age 10 and 14, which look pretty good, on to the more mature ones now.
Regarding your comment about Dug, yeah, his eyes were tough. Thankfully, they’re really easy with this series of drawings I’m working on now, just circles really, until I get into the 40’s. Eyes and hands are probably the hardest things for me at the moment, unless you include proportions, that’s always tough.
Thanks for the comments guys, I’ll keep you posted! I should have this little project done before the weekend. Keyword, SHOULD.
Haha, typical of me. I haven’t worked on this series since that post. I did however manage to pull another drawing out of my hat, and it turned out quite nicely. Swing by my dA for a gander at it. I think you’ll be pleased. There’s a tiny bit of a spoiler, so if you’re paranoid about getting a sneak peek, I’d advise caution.
Have been having a rummage through your drawing, especially the ones on deviantart.com. I really like the one you’ve done of Dug, he looks fantastic.
As for the Carl aged 5, he looks so cute
Carl ages 8, still looks good, but I think his head looks too big because the shoulders meet his face nearer his chin (compared to Carl aged 5)
Still a great drawing though.
So where’s the rest of the set ???
Thanks so much Goo-Stow! Especially coming from someone who’s so amazing at drawing, that’s really nice of you. I haven’t messed with the set in a while, I need to work on that again at some point. I’ll let you know when it’s done! It’s a total of 14 drawings, so it could take me a while. I have 4 done so far.
Well, needless to say, I dropped the Carl project a while ago. I got 4 done, but haven’t really gotten back into it. Maybe I will at some point.
On the OTHER hand, I conjured up a pretty fancy piece of work which I’d like to share with you all. Careful, minor spoilers (I think only lizardgirl and Wall-E and other UK members should stay away from it, if you’ve seen Up or gotten a sneak peek at the intro you’re fine)

The Promise looks great! I like the detail you’ve incorporated into the piece, like the books on the shelf or the shading on the Paradise Falls painting. Only criticisms would be Ellie’s eyes look a bit weird, and their faces are a bit angular (reminding of the Mii characters from Nintendo Wii, for some reason), but the rest is absolutely impeccable. Did you draw this from memory? Cos’ if it is, you either have photographic memory or watched it a lot of times! Excellent shading, and overall great work!
I liked Commando Carl better, I think it’s your best work yet! You’ve captured his aggressive expression and stance perfectly, just look at that snarl! “Make my day.” Haha! No seriously, this is my favourite from you so far. I happened to see the original as a post from the Pixar fan group on Facebook, and I think yours came pretty close to it, albeit in B&W form. I’d like you to attempt colours when you think you’re ready, but at the mo’, I think you’re doing awesome at your art skillz, bro!
Awesome! It’s nice to see a full scene opposed to just characters. You did a nice job shading. I really like it.
I know you’re really into drawing now so I am going to give you some critique that could help bring you to the next level. Push the contrast in your shading. (I still struggle with this) Find your darkest darks and make them as dark as you can. Same goes for your whites. Push the two extremes. The rest of your shading should fall inbetween those values. This will help your drawings look more volumetric. Once that happens, you can remove the outlines-the shading will act as a subtle outline between shapes. This is another style of drawing that you may want to try sometime. I use it mainly for life drawing when I want to make things look realistic.
You’ve made some great progress in the past few months. Keep it up!
Thanks Hannah! The shading has pretty good contrast, but I do think it could be better. It’s just hard because I don’t know how dark I can go before I can’t erase it. Tough stuff! Thanks for the critique, I appreciate it!
TDIT haha, you like Commando Carl more? The funny thing about that is I did it on a whim, and it took me 2 and a half hours to finish! Gotta love happy accidents, I’m really proud of him. I think he turned out a bit easier because I was referencing a 2D image, it’s tougher to do 3D.
You’re welcome. I definitely know how hard it is! I’ve been forced by my professors to go so dark that I can’t erase it fully. I kind of freaked me out because I like being able to erase and change things. I stopped freaking out when I realized it made the drawing ‘pop’. It’s just something to play around with if you want to.
Haha, well that was just my pencil and kneaded eraser that I used for it. I haven’t gotten to use any of my new stuff yet. I did start my entry for the Art Jams (but barely any of it is done) but I’m gonna have to do some non-Pixar stuff soon, Life Drawing, and materials for my application at Ringling (dang, I want in SO BAD)
Well, I’ve had these done for a while now, but I just now decided to get off my lazy bum and scan these. They kinda make me happy, hehe

Enjoy! I need to get back to my Art Jamz Entry and start my submissions for Ringling soon,… DARN LAZINESS
I know how ya feel. I can be the same way. I love the pics! Particularly the one of Geri (probably because that’s my favorite Pixar short and he kinda reminds me of my Papa ). They were done very well. I’m glad to see some art done for the shorts. If I may ask, what are you planning for the Art Jams?
Well, it’s Up-related, obviously, but it doesn’t HAVE to be a crossover does it? If I can just use 2 characters from the same movie, all I’ll say is it’s a frame from a pre-release clip. I need to get back to work on it. I started it last week, but haven’t touched it since.
Thanks Violet Parr, for the compliments! I did Geri just before going for my 39th (and 40th) screening, in my car, hehe. I’m pretty happy with how he turned out, it was actually much easier than I thought it would be. (I spent a lot of time fixing up his right eye though, darn eyes, being all tricky and stuff)
Thanks for the sneak peek . No, it doesn’t have to be a crossover, as long as it involves two characters meeting for the first time. And you’re welcome. And Geri does look totally AWESOME ! Eyes can be tricky, though .
Hehe, thanks again Violet.
Not exactly Pixar-related, but I was bored in class today. Whipped this up in about 45 minutes, and I love the original pic, so heck, why not?
Maxwell from Scribblenauts
Just like I said via Twitter. Cute!
I like the Maxwell, man. I like the Maxwell.
