I don’t quite know where to place this, so could the mods move it to the appropriate thread?
Anyway, I was watching American Dad late last night, when Stan mentioned someone (a “Christy White”) being caught watching Pixar’s newest film, [spoil]“Clothes”[/spoil]. And John Ratzeberger plays a [spoil]tie[/spoil].
I loved how they were sorta riffing on Pixar’s daring and often outrageous plot premises, and how often they get away with it because they are so awesome! If that movie was real, I would so pay to watch JR voice a piece of apparel!
Steve also wears a Scout’s uniform, though I doubt they were intentionally spoofing Russell (although the random badges on the sash came pretty close!).
I believe the episode is “Live and Let Fry” (love the pun on the JB title). Anyone seen this? Here’s the Wiki and episode online. Just watch the opening two minutes.
They may not have been commenting on the Pixar’s outrageous plot premises as much as some people thinking they just “Take an object that doesn’t normally talk and make it talk”.
I agree with Fett on this one, I don’t think they were really pushing for how deft Pixar is for doing well with obscure premises, it was probably just a play at their obscurity, and a throw to John Ratzenberger.
I also wonder if the sash was referenced to Russel because of the outrageous badges, though I really think it is.
I have to think I agree with you more, because really, most animated movies have been made with animals as the main characters (isn’t Toy Story and Wall-E the only movies with “talking” not-supposed-to-be-talking movie characters?)
I bet there’s some personal connection there, like the Simpsons…
Oh, I remember seeing that episode a while back. I started cracking up when I heard that line. Really funny stuff. From what I remember, the rest of the episode was also really funny.
Can’t say I’m really a fan of Seth MacFarlane’s work. His shows like Family Guy pretty much showed me how annoying pop culture gags can truly be in cartoons when used to the same extent as him. I’m always looking for more creativity and originality in animation, which is something Pixar does have (Seth has even said that he hates Pixar films).
That really saddens me that Seth said that. I’m sure that was in regards to his opinion that his shows are the be-all-end-all form of animation. I love Family Guy dearly, but comparing MacFarlane’s shows to Pixar is ridiculous. They are two entirely different art forms and formats, and it’s not like they’re competing against each other or anything. Seth needs to shove his big ego someplace where not even Quagmire would go.
And this is off-topic, but ffdude1906, I love your new avatar!
I found this gag pretty amusing, especially since I enjoy American Dad, as well as Family Guy, but I honestly think older episodes of Family Guy are funnier.
I did some research, and it turns out Seth doesn’t exactly hate Pixar (As well as Dreamworks). He admits that their films are “gorgeous to look at” and “impressive beyond belief”, but thinks the jokes are obvious and a bit tired. As much as I disagree with it, I suppose I respect his opinion.
John Lasseter has even stated in an interview that he is a fan of Family Guy.
I sort of agree, I guess. Family Guy can be entertaining at times, but now it just seems to be about pop-culture gags and content pushing which to be frank, aren’t very funny. Episodes before Season 4 are funnier.
Yeah that saw gag aswell also am a huge fan of seths work favorite family guy i crack up to whatever peter say in last nights episode he said this is my lion his name is montacorth and then he said yeah i have a lion now… and everyone was just staring at him one of my fave family guy moments well anyway yeah i saw the pixar refrence.
They had another Pixar reference in the show that’s related to American Dad, The Cleveland Show. It was a brand new episode.
The small boy Rallo was in a nursing home. An elderly man, Murray, wanted to escape, so Rallo had an idea that he “Saw in a movie”. He tied a bunch of balloowns to the mans wheelchair!
He crashed around the room and caused havoc. Then Carl flew on by in his house outside the window and yelled “SCREW YOU MURRAY”. Then an airplane carrying a sign said “it takes more than 9 million balloons to lift a house”
I think it’s oober interesting, that Pixar films have been getting parodied on comedy shows like Office, american Dad, Cleveland Show, MAD-TV. It shows what an impact Pixar has on our culture.

I don’t think Pixar having an impact on culture is a bad thing, but when they do have it then they’re either going to be parodied in a playful way out of loving admiration and respect from the creator of those shows, or in a more insultive and disgraceful way. Whenever I see Seth McFarlane’s parodies they often come off in the latter category for me.
