I guess I’m warming up to the idea of a FN sequel, but the idea of it being “Finding Dory” sounds really cheesy to me.
Maybe it is not so much about “finding” Dory because she physically gets lost, maybe it’s more like she goes on a journey to discover her past, since she seems to have forgotten it? Kind of like how people take time to go “find out who they really are”.
I actually think that would be interesting.
Dory’s backstory is certainly better than a lot of other potential Nemo sequel plots, I’ll give Pixar that. I’m still just not too enthusiastic about the idea of another sequel, and especially one for Nemo. Perhaps if Monsters U turns out well, I’ll be more open to Finding Dory. Pixar needs to prove to me that it can produce a good sequel again before I’m ready for another.
Have you guys seen the press release? Because you called it, that’s exactly what it’s about
When Dory said “just keep swimming” in 2003’s Oscar®-winning film “Finding Nemo,” she could not have imagined what was in store for her (not that she could remember). Ellen DeGeneres, voice of the friendly-but-forgetful blue tang fish, revealed details today about Disney•Pixar’s “Finding Dory”—an all-new big-screen adventure diving into theaters on Nov. 25, 2015.
“I have waited for this day for a long, long, long, long, long, long time,” said DeGeneres. “I’m not mad it took this long. I know the people at Pixar were busy creating ‘Toy Story 16.’ But the time they took was worth it. The script is fantastic. And it has everything I loved about the first one: It’s got a lot of heart, it’s really funny, and the best part is—it’s got a lot more Dory.”
Director and Pixar veteran Andrew Stanton takes audiences back to the extraordinary underwater world created in the original film. “There is no Dory without Ellen,” said Stanton. “She won the hearts of moviegoers all over the world—not to mention our team here at Pixar. One thing we couldn’t stop thinking about was why she was all alone in the ocean on the day she met Marlin. In ‘Finding Dory,’ she will be reunited with her loved ones, learning a few things about the meaning of family along the way.”
According to Stanton, “Finding Dory” takes place about a year after the first film, and features returning favorites Marlin, Nemo and the Tank Gang, among others. Set in part along the California coastline, the story also welcomes a host of new characters, including a few who will prove to be a very important part of Dory’s life.
Yes, I read it at a blog, but I didn’t notice that they stablish the time frame in it!
It’s set just one year after the original, which means Nemo probably won’t be much older. Will Alexander Gould still voice him?
So, being honest, where does Finding Nemo fit? Pretty much in the same category than the other Pixar films that have had sequels. I see no difference. The film closed up perfectly well, but it didn’t close up the UNIVERSE. The lives of these characters continue forward and we can witness them without the original film being hurt (unless the film is bad, but that’s completely another question).
I feel like Pixar have majorly sidestepped the biggest issue with a Finding Nemo story, in that as you say this is another story in the same universe, and doesn’t sound like it’s strictly a direct sequel due to the fact that we investigate different characters. And that is the only thing keeping me optimistic about this film, because if it were called Finding Nemo 2 and focused on Marlin’s relationship with Nemo, it reopens doors that were closed so perfectly and beautifully in the first film. At least if Finding Dory is weak, as you say, it won’t hurt Finding Nemo.
Make it stop. Please. Make it stop.
Just… ugh. I’m so disgusted. How can Pixar do this? How? I hope this doesn’t turn out to be true. Nemo is such a great film and it would be a shame to have it tarnished by an entirely unnecessary sequel.
I was opposed to the idea of sequels but since Cars 2 and Toy Story turned out fine I am not really worried. I like the inventive ways to talk about the characters it makes me feel I grow with them and still part of them. It makes them feel like they are still living. As people we don’t only have one story. They tell me beginning and then re-introduce you into their lives in different ways. It’s important because then they aren’t one hit wonders that you fabricated then get rid of them. Like Andy’s Toys he passes them on. As time goes on we can pass them on to our future and keep the feelings they gave us.
It’s like taking the fan fics of those of us who wanted more of our favorite characters and giving them more life. I am personally ok with the idea of more in a series since they talked about it almost 10 years ago doing sequels. I love how they still live!
Nice that some agree with how I see this.
Anyway, I changed the thread’s title
It’s weird, because when I first heard this news earlier I hoped it was nothing more than a delayed April Fool’s prank, but thinking more about it now, I’m actually pretty okay with the idea itself. And according to Ellen, the script is still sweet and heartrending like the first, so… who knows? I liked Cars 2, and I love both sequels to Toy Story.
I like your perspective on it too, LittleTomo. I’ll do my best to stay positive about this. I probably wouldn’t if we didn’t have several original films coming out in the coming years, but luckily, I think the balance of originals/sequels is pretty fine right now.

Same. I kind of excited now!
I feel like a loner for the fact that I was excited and happy from the moment I heard about it this morning. Maybe I just get too excited when Pixar releases a new movie. But things like Ellen saying the script was good and Andrew Stanton directing (and the fact that Pixar’s never let me down) are just making me really happy about it at the moment.
This makes me shake my head at Pixar. I swear they’re better than this. What’s with all the sequels they’re doing? And Finding Dory just sounds like straight-to-video material. Why don’t they try coming up with some more original ideas rather than making sequels? I was hoping that after Monsters University they’d cut down on the follow-ups.
I can’t believe they’ve cancelled Newt but are considering this. Newt was a film I REALLY wanted to see happen. The Good Dinosaur does look promising though, I’ll give them that.
I can’t wait until Finding Dory is released. It seems like a very very interesting story. I’m sure Andrew Stanton is going to make yet another heart warming story for Pixar.
When I heard the news for real, I practically squealed! And I was so super-excited and fangirly and then I thought about all you… jaded doubters… and I was kinda dreading logging on PP. Again, I have to say that I’m totally disappointed in the fanbase here! It’s a total bummer that I’m one of a minute few here who’s actually excited for this! Can we please be kind, stop hating on Pixar and acting like it’s going to be a horrible movie, and just see what comes? I’m gonna bet that by 2015, you’ll allllllll be crying your eyes out at the end 'cause it’ll be so awesome and touching! I’m pretty certain I will
Hmm. Did anyone check out the interview from Ellen yet?

You’re not alone, OWP!! I just had the biggest ear-to-ear grin when this news flooded in earlier today, and still am watching that Ellen video again and again. Not to the point of squealing though, had to be said. I’m really really excited about seeing Dory/Marlin/Nemo/Tank Gang again after all those years. And I have ABSOLUTELY no doubt that Pixar will serve us another wonderful story that might stand up to the original. And even if the off-chance that the story is not all that, the fact that there will be a Dory-centric movie coming up full of all her antics and one-liners is fascinating enough to send me over the moon. So excited!!
I am too!

Whoa, I forgot I wrote that! I just want to make clear that this was my gut reaction (posted last July) after the first rumblings of a sequel appeared. I’m still not excited about it, but I’m more open to the idea now than I was then, especially after seeing the story. I do think Finding Dory has promise. As you guys have said, it won’t ruin the wonderful ending of the first Nemo by retreading the Marlin/Nemo relationship. And that is very important.
Personally, I like having some mysteries unsolved. Take Harry Potter- there are some things we never fully understand, like where Fawkes went, the Marauders’ adventures, how James managed to snag Lily, etc. But I like that. I don’t want to have creators fill in all the blanks and tell us exactly what happened. Right now, we can speculate all we want about Dory’s family! What are they like? How did they get separated? And all of our opinions, even the wildest theories, are equally valid. The great thing about fanfiction is that it allows for so many different takes on material. But once the film comes out, it limits our creativity. There’s an “official” answer, perhaps one we really didn’t need to have. And yeah, you can have personal opinions about that fictional world that differ from the official sequel, but the official answers will always influence you to some degree, and your differing opinions are seen as “wrong.”
The author John Green believes that books belong to their readers. He doesn’t provide extra-texual information (such as what happens to the characters after the story ends) because he wants to give readers the freedom to interpret the story in many different ways. He says that by giving readers these answers, authors can get in the way of the relationship between books and their readers. Films and books are obviously different mediums, but IMO, some of the same ideas apply. With any type of art, readers can take the piece as it is and find new ways of interpretation or levels of meaning that the creators never dreamed of! Ambiguity can be wonderful.
I’m open to sequels if they truly explore new themes and really add something to that fictional world, like TS2. But even those do erase some of that universe’s ambiguity, and I personally feel that those answers should only be filled in if it’s for a very good reason. If Pixar touches upon some truly unique ideas with Finding Dory and respects the original film, then by all means, full steam ahead.
That said, I’m glad you guys are so excited about it! You definitely aren’t alone in your excitement! I think the whole of Tumblr has exploded with joy.
Hey guys! I’m going to shamelessly promote my blog- I wrote my thoughts down on Finding Dory here- manicmation.wordpress.com/2013/0 … n-of-nemo/
I’m very interested, however, in everyone else’s reactions. Some people are totally stoaked, and others are really upset about it.
