FLV To AVI Converter

I’ve tried literally at least thirty to forty of them, but all of them failed me. If it’s not “Cannot open file! Sorry!” it’s “This trial version will only convert 20% of the video.” If it’s not that, you get your sudden close down of the program after you clicked on your choice of the video you wish to convert. Then there are tons of them with unknown bugs and errors crawling all over the place. It’s frustrating, and it’s driven me crazy.

Sigh.

So, if anyone knows a STABLE FLV to AVI converter, please post it here, as I really need it urgently. Please ensure that it’s free because I don’t have credit cards to pay for anything, that the program does not buzz out all the sudden and give me some sort of freaking error (no offense) and that the program is simple to use. Thank you very much.

I’m having a headache again…

What are you trying to get?

I already said, AVI files. A converter which converts FLV to AVI files.

Well, I don’t nkow any free programs that could help you. But the best one I that I have heard of would require payments of some sort.

Did you try the free multi format converter called “Super”?

TSS: Well, thanks for telling me that, TSS, now I just have to grab my imaginary credit card and make my payment.

nightwheel: Yeah, I’ve seen it before, but it seems very complicated. You have a direct link for its download though? Because I couldn’t seem to find one on the site I saw the SUPER thingy.

Let me see…

Ahh yes, here’s a site who has a download of it. And this one is easier to understand. Just hit the download button. Link: afterdawn.com/software/video … /super.cfm

I use MediaCoder. It converts anything to anything… when it works :stuck_out_tongue: Anyway, it always works when converting flv to .avi (with xvid codec)

It’s free and open source:
INFO> mediacoder.sourceforge.net/
DOWNLOAD> mediacoder.sourceforge.net/dlfull.htm

Anyway, I didn’t know SUPER… I’ll try it, it seems better than MediaCoder…

Ha ha! No school’s like SUPER school! XD It works! *throws confetti! Finally! After long desperate weeks of searching and fits thrown! It finally works! THANK YOU nightwheel!

Of course, there were several errors in the beginning, and I almost gave up on this thing, too. But all I had to do was to change the format of the output video to AVI instead of WMV (yeah, kinda preferred to have WMVs in the first place). Nevertheless, that error kinda killed the mood (excluding the part about the error and the method of repairing it, this entire post was copied from a post I deleted after learning about the error and pasted here). Heh.

And, sorry I was being kinda a jerk just now, TSS - you don’t know how tiring this has been for me. :frowning:

Eh, don’t worry about it. I understand.

Well I’ve used one called “Batch FLV Converter”, kind of an older, bare-bones converter. It works okay, but I woudln’t call it great. Still you could use it if you have to.

Another option, if you’re talking about YouTube clips, is to add
“&fmt=18” at the end of the YouTube URL to make it higher-res MP4 format. In that case, it’s actually an MP4 file you save (with help of YouTube video saving websites) – and more “normal” converters (like TMPEGE, and I’m sure a host of other converters) can handle MP4s that cannot handle FLVs.

Other than that, can’t be much help, sorry. But it’s funny, normally I don’t care about saving YouTube videos, but I was in Japan last year without a camera for a once-a-year festival, and really kicked myself for not having the camera. I looked up on YouTube recently, and sure enough, someone uploaded video of the festival last year. I wanted to get it, so I use one of the manyg “grab Youtube videos” websites. That “Batch FLV Converter” mentioned above is only so-so, but then I heard about the &fmt=18 to make YouTube show the video in higher-res MP4. Now I don’t even have to use that FLV converter. By putting that &fmt=18 at the end of the Youtube URL you want to “download”, the file you get is in MP4 format. Of course you still need a converter (I use TMPEGE, which I paid for years ago, a really good converter to MPEG2). So since this is pay it may not help you, except that I think there are probably more free converters that will handle MP4 than will handle FLV. (By the way, TMPEGE came out way before MP4, but it still works with it!)

Well, thanks anyway, joehisa, but I’ve already decided to use the automated converter of the Firefox Download Helper add-on. It leaves a watermark, but unless I need those clips for part of my video editing, it won’t really be a problem. Otherwise, I’ll just approach this thread again, hopefully with less rage this time.

www.vixy.com Leaves no watermark

You might want to check that link again, WALL-E; it led me to a search engine site rather than a download site. Besides, like I implicated in my previous post, I don’t really need another converter right now, especially one that has potential for disappointing me again for the trillionth time. Thanks, anyway, WALL-E.

www.vixy.net is online!

I’ve seen that before. I always wondered if it actually works on any flash streaming links. I will try it another time, when I need it. Till then, thanks for the link, WALL-E.
