I didn’t see a thread for discussing Futurama in my cursory check so I’m making one now, if there already is one just lock this one up…
Anyway, I love Futurama, it is actually my favourite TV show.
The characters and setting are perfect and the humour always hits the right note.
I’ve just watched the final DVD movie, ‘Into the Wild Green Yonder’ and felt that it was a brilliant end to the series, obviously I’d rather if it didn’t end, but at least this way it won’t stagnate like the Simpsons.
Honestly, it’s just hysterical. I can’t make it through an episode without laughing. But, in the style of truly memorable TV shows, it’s able to have heartfelt moments as well. The Sting and Godfellas (my favorite episode) are great examples of how alternately funny and tear-jerking this series can be. It’s a great show, and those of you who haven’t seen it really ought to.
Futurama is the best TV show ever made. The direct-to-dvd movies are also pretty good. When I was looking up Futurama on the internet I learned that Matt Groening, the creator, is planning a sixth season. {He counted the direct-to-dvd movies as a fifth season.}
Yeah, I don’t think anybody who worked on the show wants to see it die, it just depends on whether Fox will re-air it I guess.
I found the ending of the last DVD movie to be particularly emotional, it was very well done, even if no more episodes are made I’d be happy with that as the last scene.
My favourite episode is ‘How Hermes Reaquisitioned his Groove Back’, the whole thing is hilarious and the song at the end makes it perfect.
My favourite character is Zapp Brannigan, everything he says makes me crack up: ‘In the game of Chess, you can never let your opponent see your pieces.’ Priceless!
Glad to see I’m not in the minority of preferring Futurama to The Simpsons. My favorite episode is ‘The Deep South’ because it combines my two favorite things- hillbilly culture and Mermaids! Though, my favorite character is Zoidberg (Billy West is a genius, especially when he tributizes classic comedy icons; eg. Stimpy= Larry Fine, Zoidberg= George Jessel, etc.), so I’ve got a soft spot for ‘That’s Lobstertainment!’, the supposed ‘fan-voted worst episode’.
Oh, I love Futurama!!! I LOVE Bender and Dr. Zoidberg…everything they say makes me laugh.
But my fave episode revolves around Fry - I forget what it’s called but it’s about Fry & his brother, who is better than him at everything and Fry goes to find his lucky seven-leaf-clover. A Breakfast Club reference @ the end…love it. I also like the episode when Bender goes to Robot Hell.
Futurama is essentially a TV show for geeks… like me!
But really, I prefer it now over The Simpsons, which is getting a little stale. I’m more of a film and sci-fi buff (the latter for which I can thank Wall-E for that), and this is right up my alley.
I like the idea of Fry’s intergalactic ‘surrogate’ family, and how his best friend’s a robot, and his unrequited love interest is a [spoil]mutant[/spoil].
Strangely, I had an idea of an average Joe travelling to a futuristic city populated by aliens, robots and humans, and how he must learn to adapt to their customs and technologies. Guess Futurama sorta fulfilled that fantasy, now that I discovered it (about 2 years ago).
I’ve watched the odd episodes they show on free-to-air in Oz, but I want to get hold of the season box-sets to watch those suckers back to back. Oh, and I watched the first movie ‘Bender’s Big Score’ (I used that to introduce the series to my bro, who’s now a fan of it too! ), with plans to watch the other three!
The three other DVD movies are definantly worth it, they have the same feel as the TV show, but are longer! Here’s hoping for more! The third one especially is very funny if you like Dungeons and Dragons/ The Lord of the Rings…
I think that the Simpson’s family centred comedy lacks something that Futurama’s friend/co-worker setting has. I think the Simpsons are all ‘too similar’
whereas all of the characters in Futurama are much more well-rounded.
Plus it’s much more emotional than the SImpsons, or any other animated comedy that I can think of, the episode with Fry’s dog (Jurassic Bark?) is brilliant, as is ‘Luck of the Fryrish’, which I think CoCoMeister, is the episode you are referring to with Fry’s brother in it.
I love Futurama! And I too like it more than the Simpsons! I just think the stories are more creative. I love Fry, Bender, Farnsy, and Zoidy. I also really like Kiff and am really happy for him that he and Amy hooked up. I’ve seen 2 of the 3 movies, but I really what to see that last one.
PS: Bender: Bender to crew: I have reached the gateway to another universe. I feel awed and strangely humbled by the momentous solemnity of this occasion.
[turning away from the gateway]
Bender: Hey, other universe, bite my shiny metal ass!
[gets his ass zapped by the gateway] lol lol lol lol!!!
Futurama’s coming back? That’s awesome! Shame I don’t get any TV channels which show it, guess I’ll have to wait for the DVD’s…
Bender: That sounds dangerous, can’t we send some sort of robotic probe or something?
[Crew turn to look at him]
Bender: Hey, why’re you all looking at me? Aww, crap.
I love the first 1 - 3 seasons of Futurama, but hold off bringing out the “champag-en” yet because I’m not excited at all at the idea of more Futurama episodes. Basically I don’t think Matt Groening has a good reputation for letting sleeping dogs lie. I haven’t seen any of the movies but did watch half an episode of Bender’s Big Score when it was broken up into 4 or so TV episodes. I feel like it’s lost its magic and there will never be any classic episodes again like “I, Roommate”, “Mars University” and “The Day the Earth Stood Stupid”. Maybe if any of the new episodes have “Tales of Interest” episodes I’ll watch them, just like even though I don’t like The Simpsons anymore, the Halloween episodes are ok.
Bender’s Big Score started pretty slow, but by the end you could really tell that Futurama was back. I think Futurama has an advantage over the Simpsons because it’s not just Matt Groening who gets the final say, David X Cohen also has input, so we’ll have to wait and see whether these new episodes will bring back that old magic.
Then again there have been plenty of sci-fi films/shows released since Futurama finished and all are prime targets for some sci-fi satire. hopes for a Wall•e episode
Well okay, sorry. So i’ve seen 2 of the 4 movies then. Although my one friend who’s seen Bender’s Game says it wasnt as good as the others. I dont know. If I can catch it on TV again I’d probably watch it.
