I’ll admit, if this had been a Pixar film, I probably would have seen it based on Pixar’s track record. But you’re right, this doesn’t sound very Pixary at all, and as this has been posted in Wikipedia, I wouldn’t be surprised if it had never been a Pixar idea at all. I mean, it’s not like we’d heard about this before when Pixar’s other films were announced, and it really doesn’t sound like something Pixar would make.
And, looking at the cast list, well this is sounding more and more fake by the minute…I dunno, maybe I’m being too skeptical, but yeah, it doesn’t sound that real to me.
On the DVD commentary for Toy Story 2, they actually did joke about the possibility of doing a film about garden gnomes (in response to one of Hamm’s lines early on in the film), but you can tell by their tone of voice that they weren’t being particularly serious.
As far as I know, the basic concept of “Gnomeo and Juliet” had been floating around at Disney since as far back as 2000, but it was never at any point slated to be a Pixar film - rather, one of Disney’s solo CG animation efforts, which John Lasseter had shut down when he took over as head of their animation department. Since then, production resurfaced at Miramax, only their future didn’t prove so bright. Interesting how it’s - allegedly - managed to keep itself going this long. Obviously someone’s very determined to see it get made.
My thoughts on the film itself? I must admit, there’s something very whimsical about the whole notion of a film about garden gnomes told to Elton John music…but eh, I don’t know. I still have my reservations about this one.
You know what I realized… I think they thought it was a Pixar film after Lee’s comment in the TS2 commentary. It seems like Toy Story with gnomes, but with Romeo and Juliet in it. Too many recycled ideas. I probably won’t see it.
Interestingly, according to the great oracle of the Internet that is Wikipedia, this project was initially produced by Disney Feature Animation before Mr Lasseter shut down that division. Bounced to Miramax and finally Touchstone here.*
*EDIT It seems mogwai_milkshake covered that already.
I don’t know, this trailer is incredibly lacklustre and although the animation is much better than say, Alpha and Omega, unlike the latter, it failed to capture my interest. I mean seriously, a gnome in a mankini? Not to mention they had too many ‘awkward pauses’ where they cut the music and wait for the audience to laugh at the punchline.
And how did Sir Elton John go from ‘Can You Feel the Love Tonight’ and ‘Somewhere Out of the Blue’ to this? Hopefully, he does just an impressive love theme here, but I seriously doubt it. And the former director of Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron is heading this, but it seems too pedestrian for someone with such an impressive film under her belt.
And like everyone is saying, it’s Toy Story, but with garden gnomes. That would be alright, if it weren’t for the fact that the jokes are incredibly juvenille and that there is an apparent lack of passion (compared to a ‘recycled-plot-movie’ such as HTTYD or LOTG which at least has an honest enthusiasm in their trailers). Not only is Hollywood running out of ideas, it’s getting lazy as well.
Regardless of which studio made the film (Starz), it’s worth a look. Kelly Asbury directing is a plus. It will be interesting if Touchstone promotion and distribution can help Canada-based Starz, which previously produced animation for VeggieTales, Everyone’s Hero, 9, and Hoodwinked Too!–the latter of which is in Weinstein limbo.
The UK trailer, with the Ozzy Osbourne-voiced deer, looks more promising than the US version.
I think I’m going to skip this one, and I’m so glad Pixar didn’t get involved in this.
To me the trailer has a big “don’t watch this!” written all over it.
Just curious, what sort of red flag? I thought maybe the point was to release the gnomey lovefest in time for Valentine’s Day. Also, it’s interesting that Gnomeo is the first of a release-a-month CG animation wave leading up to Cars 2…
Feb: Gnomeo and Juliet
Mar: Rango
Apr: Rio
May: Kung Fu Panda 2
Jun: Cars 2.
It’s a fair guess that the distributors are aware of each others’ films and are making a little breathing room in the release schedule.
