By the way, I loved the movie (the first half is among my favourite film experiences ever), so I am but trying to assuage my remaining doubt.

GO-4 is AUTO’s little helper droid who launches WALL-E and the plant into space in a capsule after setting the self-destruct.

Nearer to the end, the captain obliviously kicks it out the command centre window in the midst of his tustle with AUTO, and it falls to the ground where it explodes (dies), and no-one notices.

While it might have been meant to be but a direct appendage of AUTO, it wasn’t clear. In fact, the robot seemed fairly independant.

This was part of a troubling conflict of themes found throughout the film. In a movie about giving people (and robots) a chance to be free-thinking individuals, and where robots are established as sentient beings, there was a lot of unjustified, violent robot murder (think of when the crazed buffering robot massacres the large securidroids when all they did was stand there, making sure to finish off the injured ones). And it is passed off as funny because they are robots…

It only bothers me because the movie very meticulously and deliberately establishes that robots can be conscious, feeling individuals (making us care about them), and then suddenly starts treating some of them as cannon fodder for humour.

To tell you the truth, I thought the end of the film to be a chance of attaining film noir status. I wish Wall-e was not able to recognize Eve in the end. But just as Disney has butchered Grimm’s fairy tales in every other animated film they did, Wall-e must live happily-ever-after. Wow, profound…

Yeah, I agree with the thread writer concerning the demise of GO-4. It’s odd, because he seemed to be the only intelligent robot that died, as AUTO was just disabled, and I didn’t really consider those security robots to be intelligent. They didn’t act like they had feelings, but GO-4 did, as he showed being startled, fear, etc.

What do others think? I actually rather liked GO-4. To quote his description, “loyal to a fault”, but still a faithful little guy. I mean, he never did anything wrong, really–he was following AUTO, who was his designated leader. It’s not like he had any malevolent intent.

So Auto told GO-4 to take the plant out of EVE while she was turned off, and then Auto lied to the captain saying: “It contains no foreign specimen. Probe’s memory is faulty.” Is that right? By the way, didn’t GO-4 hiss?
