GO-4's Super Spoiler Thread!

To quote a thread on Rotten Tomatoes:

Yeah, I agree with the thread writer concerning the demise of GO-4. It’s odd, because he seemed to be the only intelligent robot that died, as AUTO was just disabled, and I didn’t really consider those security robots to be intelligent. They didn’t act like they had feelings, but GO-4 did, as he showed being startled, fear, etc.

What do others think? I actually rather liked GO-4. To quote his description, “loyal to a fault”, but still a faithful little guy. I mean, he never did anything wrong, really–he was following AUTO, who was his designated leader. It’s not like he had any malevolent intent.

True, but then again it wasn’t necessarily on purpose that the captain kicked GO-4 out of the window.

I remember hearing a few gasps in the theater when he ‘died’…

I think GO-4 died because he was between being an intelligent being (human-like robot) and a programmed bot (the security bots). He was like a pesky animal, a gopher precisely. And there are also a bunch of dead WALL-E’s that our character feeds on, but I don’t think many of them got to WALL-E’s stage of personality.

I admit feeling a little sorry for the guy, though I always thought he was more an extension of Auto. Not a direct extension, but like he didn’t have the abilty of independant thought beyond basic reflexes. Like he was Auto’s “puppet”. I think their matching “eyes” gave me that impression.

Who says he’s beyond repair, anyway? Maybe the Captain finds him, scrambles his robo-brains a bit, and makes him into a nice pet for the gel kiddies. XD

So true! I did see him as an extension also. It felt more like that. Its just like when EVE shoots the security robot or when the crazy massage robot goes ape-crazy on the security bots. Does that point to killing or an extension? It seems like the security system was controlled by all the same thing…not necessarily the same brain

You may wanna change the title of this topic. It’s very spoily otherwise. ^^;

Yes, there is a fine line in the sand here, but…
I didn’t see the Steward bots as being alive. They made it as clear as possible that they couldn’t think for themselves. They showed this several times. They did not respond to John at all. They did not show any sense of problem when they were shoved into the closet aside from technical difficulties.

GO-4’s death though… yes he could feel, but, they really put effort into making him sinister though. I mean, they gave him evil music in the space walk scene for crying out loud, and don’t tell me he didn’t even notice that WALL-E had went into the escape pod… that was going to EXPLODE. I mean, WALL-E and EVE were pretty loud. Cold, much?
lotus your icon looks familar… eek!!! sierra mist drop up my nose trys to lick nose

That it does.

I just think that GO-4 is not really liked. He’s kinda like a stromtrooper if you will. Hasnt really done anything wrong, just the overall feeling is not liked

I do agree that GO-4 was a pretty unfeeling character. I was actually mad at him as he watched AUTO frying WALL-E’s circuit.

He kinda reminds me of Charlie from Monsters, Inc. He was George’s assistant, always summoning the CIA when his “friend” accidentally had a ‘2319’. Towards the end, Georgie shoves him into Nepal and we forget about him. That’s kind of GO-4’s scenario, where his character isn’t flesh enough to relate to.

[spoil]GO-4 looked to be in about as bad a shape as WALL-E, and WALL-E never died, so why would you expect that of GO-4? Also, with the steward bots that were pummelled…even if they did possess consciousness, they WERE the opposition. (Remember TI, anyone?!)[/spoil]

Well, I didn’t think that GO-4 was merely an extension of AUTO because:
1. They talked with one another earlier in the film, and GO-4 saluted, which would be unnecessary if he were merely a “limb” for AUTO.

 2. GO-4 jumped, startled, when he first saw AUTO fighting the others. If he were merely an extension, why would he be surprised?

Additionally, I think that he was in worse shape than WALL-E. I mean, he’s smashed to pretty much no more than sparking parts, while WALL-E is pretty much in-tact but for his shape and extremities.
go-4 died i dont remember that!

I didn’t feel bad AT ALL when GO-4 died, he’s just an evil henchman, what’s there to feel bad about? Anyways, that fall beat him up pretty bad, but i think he’d be repairable, but who would want to repair him? If he had fallen in the water, that’d be a different story. GO-4 is not a extension of AUTO he’s actually Captain’s first mate, he’s basically the Captain’s little assistant who gets things to and from his cabin, while AUTO is more of his co-captain, even though he controls more stuff tahn the Captain himself!!

kewl i never realized that gj!!

So true. But still I can see the conflict. He was definitely malicious toward a lot of things that were happening on the ship. I guess control was what was needed.

Two words: The Incredibles. Literally dozens of speaking, breathing human henchmen getting beat up, shot, and blown to bits. Yet that apparently isn’t a “big deal”. Also, Ryan made a good point about George’s assistant in Monsters, Inc. Although, I was always slightly bothered by Charlie getting shoved through the door and forgotten. He seemed like a nice enough guy and George’s reaction felt rather cruel, even considering the circumstances.

[spoil]On the other hand, GO-4’s “death” doesn’t seem nearly as bad to me since he was just a machine. All the machines aboard the Axiom were programmed to have personalities. But only Wall-e (and later Eve) developed actual emotions. And M-O, I think, started to have emotions too by the end of the film. All the other robots were computers with artificial intelligence. Plus, I’m sure there’s more GO-4’s where that one came from. Besides, not wanting to sound cruel, but I thought that was one of the funniest “irony” moments in the movie. The fact that he could have landed in the water, or bounced on the diving board, but instead lands a foot away from both (although I guess the other two options wouldn’t have left him in very good shape either). [/spoil]

Another thing is along with only Wall-E, EVE, and possibly M-O, the robots in the movie seem to have no personality or feelings in them. Something to note thought, the reject robots seems to have the same spark of life as it were to the same embodiment of EVE and Wall-E

I did like the irony in GO-4’s demise. And if anyone’s seen the movie four times like I have, you might have noticed that when Auto sees the plant the captain has and A113 flashes, in the corner of his screen is a blinking icon of GO-4. That doesn’t really make him an extension of Auto though, rather an assistant.
