Come on, Haunt, you’re too harsh on yourself. So you were tired, but it still looks awesome to me. I wish I was able to do what you can do.
Haunt - Dang alive. 7:00 AM?! Sheesh, you’ve been busy. I’m still jealous of you, though. I’ll have to wait several years until I can even apply for admission to an art university.
Oh, pfff. Sorry about that. I didn’t mean to push you or anything. (snigger) Still, the Russell drawings are freakin’ awesome. Like The Star Swordsman said, he does look a bit older (like in the fourteen year old range), but I agree with Archibald in that you’re too hard on yourself. I love the center sketch and the countenance of the character in the very top left-hand corner of the page. You have such a unique style that really stands out and screams, “This is my way of drawing stuff and no one else can touch it!”, which rocks. More Russell!!
Keep up the great work!
– Mitch
For being really tired, those are still really good sketches of Russell! I wish I could draw like that when I am tired! My favorite sketch is the one done in your style.
Strange, I was cramming the last few days for assignments too… It was unbelievable, 3 pieces of homework due within 3 days… man, I shoulda used that Easter break more fruitfully! I stayed up till 6:30 am for one particular piece and woke at 11 am on Thursday, so I guess we share one thing in common: sleep deprivation (with you being worse off than my ‘luxurious’ 4 1/2 hours).
Anyway, B.O.T. I love your Dash doodles. Excellent explosion and speed lines. I particularly like the one of him jumping. Nice pose, arms swung back and legs tucked under in mid-air, very dynamic!
And I’ll repeat what Mitch and TSS said, he does look about 2-3 years older than his current age in the movie. One way you can make him look younger is to give him a bigger head in proportion to his body (It’s a common art trick, but I’m sure you knew that). But the fact you were exhausted makes it all the more impressive to pull off. I like the one of him beaming with his eyes closed.
You have a very unique style, it’s a little like anime, a little like Western. Keep up the awesome work!
I think that although Russell does look a little older, your sketches of him are brilliant because you’ve done them in your own style and yet he’s still really recognisable as Russell! Especially considering your lack of sleep, these sketches are very impressive. You have a way of making a character look very 3D even with just a few lines and it’s your deftness of touch when it comes to a bit of simple, light shading that adds even more depth.
Ah, heck if Russell looks a little older, it’s still awesome! It’s especially good because you were over-fatigued. I know I ain’t that good when I’m tired. I can barely pic up a pencil past 8:30 PM, let-alone at 7:00 AM when you didn’t sleep all night. Awesome job, Haunt!
Wow, April. Really? Man I’ve been a lazy little pixel pusher. That’ll change very soon.
Anyways. Did my color work warm up tonight on a panel from my pic fic. Trying single light source shading (normally I do two sources) and a new hair technique.
Oh, right. On the left is Lydia, Lucius and Honey’s daughter. On the right is Violet, of course.
sigh Back to senior film crap.
I absolutely love the lighting you put in this picture. It looks a lot natural and real. Everything seems to really shine. You stun me with your fine work with colors and light.
Older Violet looks kinda different than what I thought. I am not sure if it is her head shape, or her nose, or her hair, but something about her just doesn’t seem like Violet.
Please don’t take my last comment to seriously. It is just an observation from my POV.
^ Thank you so much! I always welcome your POV TSS.
More than likely it’s the head shape. For the last few years I’ve been trying to develop my own style for figures. Back when TI first came out I followed their designs as close as possible, but it just didn’t feel right. So this is kind of where I’m am with my humans at the moment. (And the hair was just because she’s all dolled up )
Looks great, Haunt! The coloring is handled really well. The lighting is nice. I really like your style.
^ Thank you much!
Well, I like your style, Haunt! The angular lines and cell-shaded colour reminds me of the art-style of the Street Fighter 4 or XIII video games. How’d you do that (different layers in Photoshop, or a specialised program)?
Seriously, that is, pardon the pun, incredible!
Awesome job, Haunt ! Wow! That is totally AWESOME!!! I love the coloring and shine on the hair. That is absolutely beautiful. And the subtle adding of eyeshadow was a nice touch . And, Violet’s dress is gorgeous! As TSS said, Violet doesn’t quite look the same. But, like you said, you didn’t like using the original style, and you wanted to do your own thing, and I think it’s totally awesome ! There’s no problem with wanting to be original, in fact there’s a major shortage of originality today. So, though I do prefer the original style for myself, I applaud you for using your creativity. Great job !!!
Warm up doodle from last night! Still having a hard time getting used to the way flash works.
Inspired by the perfectly gloomy song found in Violet Parr’s current sig
Flash CS4, touched up in photoshop.
Edit: I haven’t drawn her this close to her pixar-style proportions in forever o.O
Holy cow! THis is a really sweet picture of Violet. I can feel the emotion in this picture. Really well done, especially with the rain and wet effect.
^Thank you!
Glad to know the nuances came through clearly.
You’re welcome Haunt. I can’t wait to see more from you.
Excellent work with Violet Haunt, she looks great! I went back and looked at some of your older work, and I really love your sketches of Russell, looks like what he’d look like at 13 or 14, very cool! I really wish I could develop my own style soon and be able to draw custom poses and stuff, I envy that. I just hope when I do, they can be as recognizable as they are in your pieces! Excellent work!
^ Wish no more! All you need is practice my friend. Life drawing, going to the zoo, going to farms, people watch. Make goals to fill a sketch book in a month or two. Look to the classics: Carvaggio, Rembramt, Titian, Michelangelo, ect. Art books from movies are another great source of character developement and structure.
I thought myself to draw, so it’s not impossible!
That’s really incredible Haunt. That’s gotta be one of my favorites from you. Glad to see you drawing again ! The picture captures Violet’s sadness wonderfully. It really shows how she’s feeling. The rain’s a great affect, too. And Violet’s hair is absolutely beautiful. You did a great job ! I really like it! Keep it up, Haunt!
