Same. Myself, my sister and my 2 brothers all enjoy Christmas. No matter what is going on in our lives or what we’ve done up to that point of the year, we all spend it together and share our gifts (we’re all 13 and older so yeah, we actually share our presents with each other. LOL. It wasn’t like that when we were younger than that though )
I would share some stuff as a kid, like video games since we were all gonna play them.
Oddly considering I’m an atheist, I quite like going to the midnight service with my mum (christmas eve 11.30pm until just after said midnight into christmas). Granted, the best part are always the candles at the end being lit and people singing silent night by candlelight alone. It feels more ~christmassy~ and all that.
The only awkward bit is communion because well I don’t take it, and at my age, I think the people around me clearly know what that means. Still, it’s kind of a ‘tradition’ for my mother and me. This will be the 7th year I’ve gone with her. My sister has been two or three times, but it’s been a while, and my father never goes.
Also while I’m working boxing day this year, generally I quite like that day usually for loafing about myself and being lazy. lol.
I also quite like the christmas market in the city too, and it’s fun to just hang out with friends there. (It’s mostly a lot of food from across Asia and Europe, as well a some craft stalls- as well as one random stall which sells kangaroo and ostrich meat products).
Does anybody decorate their house for the holidays?
We do the inside, but not outside. Mainly because were the only middle class family in America that doesn’t have a latter. My parent’s hate me going on a roof and my Dad won’t do it.
Happy holidays everyon.
Wish it would snow, but chances are unlikley.
My family gets a lot of weird looks and gaping mouths when we say that it’s always been our family tradition to open presents on Christmas Eve instead of Christmas Day.
It’s been that way since I can remember. I think we did it that way so that we could spend the entirety of Christmas with family. Christmas Eve was our own personal time to celebrate Christmas and the birth of Christ, eat lots of mom’s homemade food and dessert, and open our gifts. On Christmas Day, sometimes we’d get up early to play with the things we opened the night before, and other years we’d simply sleep in. xD But every year we went over to my maternal grandparents’ house and had lunch with the family on my mother’s side. Sometimes a few family members from my dad’s side would come, but it wasn’t very often. (Usually if anyone came it was my paternal grandmother. She typically spent Christmas Eve with us.)
We were never taught to believe in Santa, and I thank my mom all the time for it. I just find the idea so unbelievably silly and I’m glad it wasn’t encouraged in our home.
We were always so appreciative of the gifts we got from our parents and grandparents, even though we didn’t get very many. Even when mom and dad were doing well financially, I’m so grateful that they never excessively spoiled us with stuff for Christmas and even for birthdays. When we started going through this really difficult financial situation, it was hard to accept the idea that we really may not have anything under the tree for Christmas, but we understood why and didn’t complain. So when Mom and Dad had an opportunity to buy us each a set of clothes or new pairs of shoes for Christmas, it made it that much more special, because we understood that times were hard and even though that was pretty much all we got for a few Christmasses, it didn’t matter.
Family really began to mean more and more to me each year that went by, each year that things got tighter. Now, I could care less about presents to be completely honest. They’re nice to get, but I say this from the bottom of my heart and mean it… family is honestly one of the best parts about Christmas. Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without family. My family could have completely fallen apart under all the pressures we’ve faced, but we didn’t. We all held together and relied on each other, and were reminded of how special we all were as a family come Christmas.
Augh, now I’m getting all sappy.
We don’t do very many traditional things. The only few traditions we have are food-related. Mom always makes homemade barbecue meatballs, these delicious dessert squares called Waldorf Squares (a cookie-type base with a walnut or pecan mixture inside it, topped with cream cheese frosting and sprinkled with coconut. Sounds like a strange combination but they’re incredible, and very, very rich!), sugar cookies and frosting all made from scratch, and sometimes she’ll make Boston-style baked beans. The only tradition we won’t be able to do this year, which makes me very sad, is going over to my grandparents’ house to visit on Christmas day. This is the first Christmas in my life we won’t be doing that.
I’m not one of those people that HAS to have snow for Christmas. Doesn’t bother me a bit that I’m finally in a place where it doesn’t snow for Christmas… in fact, it’s an answered prayer! Being able to walk outside, in 80F weather, wearing short sleeves and open-toe shoes a few days before Christmas is fantastic.
Wow, this post got really long. I’m proud of you if you actually read it all.
little chef
I wish it would snow for Christmas this year, but it’s been warm lately. It’s the only time of the year I like it so be cold.
It doesn’t look like we will be getting snow in time for Christmas, either.
Hey littlechef, they sound like some really lovely traditions.
And yeah, I did read it all, and not being bought up to believe in Santa is probably a really good idea.
We’re not too traditional on Christmas at all. Christmas eve, we’ll go to church in the afternoon (I’m an athiest but my aunt is a Christian so we tag along with her), but on the most it’ll be a normal day with work and shopping. In the evening, we start with some of the cooking for the dinner for the next day, and we’ll order a Chinese because by that time we’re feeling quite lazy . Then we’ll watch some telly and/or a film and we’ll go to bed.
Christmas day, we get up early, open the presents in front of everyone and then mum starts cooking breakfast and me and my sister start prepping dinner. At about 10, my stepsisters come over, and my mum goes to pick up my grandma, who always dresses up in these elaborate outfits on Christmas day . We have dinner at about 2. We ignore the Queens speech and the telly in general and play charades and games instead, until 7pm because thats when the Doctor Who special starts. After that we watch a film together and have some snacks for tea and drink a bit (or a lot) of alcohol until about midnight.
Very bog standard, modern Christmas, but it works for us,
Hello again, my fellow Planeteers! Been a long time since I’ve been here, but just wanna drop by and wish y’all a very Merry Christmas, Hannukah, Saturnalia, and New Year! If there’s one thing great about this day (besides the birth of a very significant historical figure), it’s the one time of the year where we spend time with our friends and family, and count our blessings.
I’m grateful that I’ve started my first job out of uni barely two months after my graduation in this difficult job market. I’m glad my brother is back from his exchange in Paris and Manchester to spend the holidays with us. I’m relieved my dad made it through another operation and his back’s better (though he’s still grumpy as ever). I’m thankful to have met not one, but two Brony communities (New South Wales and Singapore) IRL and lived to tell the tale! I’m excited my siblings and I are gonna jump on the bandwagon and get iPads for Christmas, and this after I’ve already got a new iPhone 4S (Thanks, dad).
But most of all, I’m just happy to have known all of you for so many years, even though I’ve only met one in real-life and only a handful have 'found me on Facebook. I really treasure the amazing times we had together, and I truly hope they last for many more years to come. Thank you everyone, for being my friend and fellow Planeteer, and may the Omniescent Deity Upstairs bless you all.
Season’s greetings,
Andre
Merry Christmas everybody !!! Hope you’re all enjoying yourselves!
Also, Happy Birthday Jesus ! (And not to insult anyone that doesn’t believe in God, just saying. Hope that’s okay.)
Had some friends and my grandparents over today. Tomorrow we’re just chillin’. But to be honest, it doesn’t really feel like Christmas for some reason… Guess I wasn’t prepared for it. We had a lot going on, so we didn’t have our typical Christmas. But that’s a-o-kay by me; I like it simple, just not hectic . But I could kick myself for not wearing my Christmas siggy sooner . But I’m listening to one of my Christmas presents right now-- new NickelBack CD .
I’m glad I get to sped Christmas here on PP, though .
Merry Christmas everyone.
It’s great to hear from you Andre!
My Christmas has been alright, nothing special really. I feel really sick, and honestly haven’t really felt much this season, because I’ve been feeling more depressed really, the most depressed I have been since Freshman year of High School.
Christmas Eve was alright. Cleaned my room. Went to Church, opened our annual pajamas Christmas presents. Got in a big fight with my mom. Same thing happened last year too.
I didn’t ask for anything for Christmas. I don’t know what to ask for. I told my family art supplies or books, DVDs. First Christmas where I bought my family presents with my own money.
Merry Christmas to all my pals. Since it’s mourning not much has happened yet. The family talked for a while on Christmas eve. Were gonna open present’s soon. I wish I could aford present’s for my family, but I don’t have a job. I’ll update later.
Merry Christmas everyone!
No celebration today, since Orthodox Christmas is on January, 7th (but my family don’t celebrate it anyway). Now I really wish to pass all my remaining tests tomorrow so I can set off to holiday with my parents, brother and friends and celebrate New Year with them.
Merry Christmas everyone! I hope you all got what you wanted.
