How big will the release be?

bahaha… sneaking food in. the last time i did that, i spilled my already open drink–that i was keeping inside my jacket–all over my shirt.
i really wish there were a midnight showing in my area. but i live in the middle of nowhere where nothing happens. haha.

Shrek the Third had an opening weekend of 121million dollars, I doubt even Toy Story 3 could top that. Pixar never openend higher than around 70million.
Off course with all the buzz (lightyear) surrounding it, and add up the extremely good reviews it’s getting I’d say it opens around the 100million… anything higher would be great, just don’t dare to get my hopes up too high

That $120 million number isn’t just pulled out of a hat. Those guys do some extensive analysis before they issue a prediction. For example, one data point they used is the fact that fandango.com is reporting that Toy Story 3 tickets represent 67% of their daily sales today. That is HUGE.

Other tidbits they factor in are Facebook and Twitter activity, where TS3 is beating Alice in Wonderland in terms of activity volume (based on that film’s activity prior to its release), and Alice opened with $116 million. Also, Flixster is reporting that TS3 has had 70% more page views than Shrek Forever After did the days before its release.

All I know is that I will be seeing it at least twice this weekend. Who’s with me?

I live in Holland, and the movie comes out this Wednesday, but I leave Tuesday for Paris… timing huh?! :open_mouth: So I’ll probably see it the end of the month or early July :frowning: shite, I’ve been waiting so long! I might even see it in Paris… anyone knows the release date of Toy Story 3 in France?

It will be very big when it comes out, maybe the biggest movie of the year, but it won’t be a monster hit like Titanic or Star Wars, it will probably be around ermmm The Dark Knight or Avatar level (still good though). Also i think the hype will die down rather quickly.

Woohoo! I’m in, RoboDad! Already got my tix for Friday and Saturday, so two trips for sure! Everybody just remember, whatever the opening weekend numbers are, this is sure to have “legs” and repeat business, and the great reviews will doubtless pull in a bunch of folks who don’t normally see Pixar films (as I think has been happening for them in recent years).

Here in Indiana, I’ve never seen anything happen like huge movie lines. I’m not sure how much the movie will gross, but I know it will hit the #1 movie in America FAST. Less than a week, imo. But I believe it will hit around $500 Million quick.

ABC news is predicting over US$100 million opening weekend.
Buying 3D tickets help.

All my predictions came through with this film, folks.

Lines, massive lines of children, teens, adults, and grandparents.

Absolutely standing room ONLY. EVERY seat was taken, and every step on the stairs was taken as well.

Audience cheering at the important parts, such as every single main toy’s introduction, the final resolution, various high points, the opening logos, the ending, it was amazing.

Gridlocked parking lots, filled to the brim. Massive crowds of people in the theater.

It was perfect.

That sounds like the ultimate cinema experience, Chopperface. I love it when the audience gets involved with a film. Unfortunately what they say about the English is true, people are so reserved over here that it’s difficult to tell whether an audience is enjoying what they’re watching, due to a complete lack of clapping, cheering or anything of that kind (from my experiences, anyway). I’d love to go to America one day to watch a Pixar film in the cinema and cheer and clap along with the rest of the audience, knowing that the film is truly being appreciated!

Anyway, as I said, glad to hear that the Toy Story 3 experience lived up to your expectations.

My local Regal theater had the movie showing on at least three screens at midnight (I know there were two 3D screens, and at least one 2D, but I couldn’t tell if there were more), and they were all packed. It will be very interesting to hear what the midnight box office receipts were.

I went to the midnight showing at the place near me and it was packed!

Same here.

If my theatre was any indication, this is going to be a huge opening. Noon hour show on a Friday in 2D, and while it wasn’t quite a sellout, it was a lot fuller than I expected. I’m going back for the same showing tomorrow, and I’ll bet that one does sell out. I was really aware of a lot of big groups today, too (multiple generations and multiple-family groups).

Deadline Hollywood has the box office numbers for yesterday. Toy Story 3 made $40 million, and is on track for at least $120 million for the weekend.

WOW! Go Toy Story 3! Tell all your friends and get them out to the theater right now! This could easily surpass Shrek The Third’s $ 121 million opening to be the BIGGEST animated opening of all time!

:astonished: That is amazing! $41 million! Yay Pixar!!

i must really live in the middle of nowhere because the two times i’ve been to see it, the theater wasn’t even close to selling out. just your average amount of people as at any other movie. haha.

I’m SO pleased it’s doing so well! It would be incredible if it even became the highest earning animated film of all time!

Today’s noon-hour 2D show still wasn’t quite a sellout, but it had to be very close. Close enough that the ushers asked us to close up some gaps in our row so more people could find seats together, and I haven’t seen them do that in ages.

I have to say, I liked it the first time, but I LOVED it the second. Pixar really does = Genius.

The estimates for the weekend are in, and TS3 “only” pulled in $109 million. So it pretty easily beat all of the other films in release this weekend… COMBINED.
