I was just discussing this topic with someone, and it’s no question that Toy Story 3 will have a HUGE opening.
Midnight showings are go like Thundercats.
How much money is this puppy gonna make?
Last year, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen had theaters with standing room only, and lines to see the 3:00am showing.
Transformers appeals to a 25 year old fanbase and mainstream people who think “ooh, that’s cool looking.”
Toy Story appeals to
*kids who were born in the 90’s and grew up with the films
*kids from today who want to see any animated film or movie that has a commercial on Disney Channel or Cartoon Network
*adults of the first generation of kids who loved the films too
*adults who are dragged to take the kids to see the films anyway
*people who are told by word of mouth to go see it
*people who listen to reviews and such
Along with people who will go see it again, this film will definetly get over $500 million at the box office. I’m putting bets at 800-900 million dollars for the final total. The opening night gross should break a record until something else comes along.
Transformers took less than a month to get 700 million… how much faster will Toy Story do that?
And how will the theaters be on opening night? Standing room only, lines, massively filled parking lots… all very likely to me.
Your predictions on the box office total and the opening night audience?
Maybe its because I’m from Delaware but we never see anything too crazy. never heard of standing rooms only. the only time I remember mass lines was for Starwars the Phantom Menace.
This same theater isn’t even showing TS3 at midnight.
I don’t’ know how big it’ll be, but it’ll easily take and hold the number one spot for a while.
I live near Delaware also and I can’t see the lines being that big as kyle said. I actually bought my midnight release tickets tonight, and the lady selling them said they didn’t sell that many yet. Might just be older fans doing that. Also the show time was listed under June 17 which might have thrown some people off.
I know they’re having advance screenings for Visa credit-card holders at Sydney City’s George Street branch…
There’s two mega-screen halls at Event Cinemas on George Street called ‘Vmax’ and only the biggest and most-anticipated movies are shown on those screens (while giving the cinema the chance to add an extra surcharge and force new releases to be playing only on those screens). I predict that all the timings for those two screens will be taken up for Toy Story 3 alone, finally shoving stupid Sux in the CIty Deux off to the smaller screens.
Not sure if they’re having midnight showings, as Event only update on Wednesday every week. There’s a smaller cinema nearer my home that updates earlier (around Sunday), so I may check that, but I’m also predicting it’ll be playing in Cinema One (their biggest hall, a nice art-deco theatre where I watched Indy 4 two years ago).
And of course, the mother of all cinemas, the largest Imax theatre in the world at Darling Harbour has already pushed Iron Man 2 and Prince of Persia out of their theatrical runs to make way for Shrek 4 this week, and Toy Story 3 next week. And I bet they’re gonna cut down on Shrek 4’s showtimes since TS3 seems a safer bet. Already they’re putting up a lot more banners, posters and lobby promotional material than the green ogre’s…
The toys are gonna take over town, and the city of Sydney is at their mercy!
Yea I just saw the advertisement in the Heareld Sun right next to news article, my mum was jumping up like she was really hyper, we might have to ditch IMAX to see the movie early, depends, my IMAX isin’t playing TS3, I guess I might have to go with the theaters large screens which also try to cut IMAX out of the box office gross the large screens names are, VMax (like the name IMAX, supplyed by Village Cinamas) and XtreamScreens (By Hoyts). So I have to see. You are luck Thedriveintheater, in Sydney, you guys get TS3 and in Melbourne, we don’t!. THANKS SHREAK!!!
EDIT- Just moved what you’d written outside the quote.
One of the theaters near me is SOLD OUT of tickets for the midnight showing! So it’s opening must be huge. I had to revert to buying tickets from a far away theater for the midnight showing.
Sorry there TDIT and lizard girl i’m not really sure where or how to post a quote for the right part! .
Sorry about that. Now when I think about it, how silly am I?!?!.
O siilly silly me, anywa, I just mean to be getting the part about IMAX, how in Sydney, you guys get TS3 and in Melbourne we don’t! .
That was my point. Thanks lizard girl! and TDIT! .
No guesses here, but my favorite theatre posted the schedule yesterday, so I’m going over there after work today to pick up a ticket for Saturday afternoon, just in case. I’m also still trying to take off Friday afternoon to go, but not sure how that’s going to work out.
One of the first things I’m going to do after I see TS3, however, is read all the reviews I’ve been avoiding in case of spoilers!
I’m going to guess that absolutely diddly squat will be happening at my local cinema. Even with really big film releases they don’t do anything aside from the odd midnight showing, so I’m not going to expect much with Toy Story 3, though I do believe that tickets will sell out fast for it. Definitely pre-booking mine!
I guess you are lucky TDIT!
I mean, it’s not like I can just go to Sydney just to see TS3 at Imax, I mean, really, Would I pay like $50 or $100 one way just to see TS3 at IMAX, that would be AWSOME! , but it’s bot going to happen .
Anyway as I said, I’m going to have to go to Village Cinamas or Hoyts big screens, I hope their in 3D. But hey, at least I WILL get to see it.
I know how you feel, gleefan1. I’ve never seen a movie in IMAX before because I’d have to travel a long way to the closest IMAX cinema, so even for a special release such as Toy Story 3, it isn’t going to happen. But as you said, the important thing is that we’re both going to see the movie at some point!
Sounds so weird to hear how yall’s local theaters aren’t even playing it at midnight when my theater always for huge lines and standing room only with big movies like this. It’s like a huge party of fans with these movies at midnight.
It’s always bigger in Texas!
So my final plan - already bought the tickets. We’re gonna go to the gas station, and pick up a soda for everyone who’s coming. Then we sneak it in inside a backpack - they don’t check for them - and get our popcorn and whatever and sitterdown about 9:00pm - and wait the whole 3 hours until midnight!!!
I always always sneak food in, haha. Somehow my brother and I thought it would be a brilliant idea to have energy drinks for the midnight release of TDK…we were already so tired from going to a music festival the day before, that when this one surprising scene came up, I jumped out of my chair so high.
