I’m glad Dragon did well in the Visual Effect Society Awards. But I don’t think that it will be strong enough to over throw arguable Pixar’s best movie.
Eh, I don’t think any Pixar will surpass Toy Story and Wall-E in terms of quality. TS3 is more popular than those, but no better, per se. But it will still destroy HtTYD for best animated.
yeah, the animation was stunning, specially from toothless, but this VES Awards is how I predict the winners from the Katzie Awards, sorry the ANNIE awards;;;;;;; Dragon will sweep among other animated films,
What I meant about politics or discrimination had nothing to do with the Dreamworks vs Pixar beef that so many fans get worked up about. I was talking more about how despite being an awards show for VFX as a whole, animation still seems to have a shot as some of the more venerable prizes. Which is just not so at the major awards shows.
I’m really pleased, HTTYD really deserved the awards here on all counts. Its animation is truly remarkable, and definitely exceeded my expectations from the mediocre teaser and ‘Dragon training’ videos.
Outstanding effects… um… Toy Story 3 had the climax scene as its showpiece, but other than that, nothing much stood out, whereas HTTYD had many siege scenes, and of course, that divine ‘romantic flight’ that is up there with ‘Define Dancing’.
And Toothless’ animation is absolutely remarkable- the only closest contenders I can think of for character animation is Maximus from Tangled and Digger from Legend of the Guardians.
I’m really pleased, because in terms of technical aspects, HTTYD owns all the bases. Toy Story 3 deserves the Screenwriters’ Guild and the Oscars nom in turn.
Yeah, I agree the Annies are a sham, especially after the KFP debacle. I loved both KFP and Wall-E, but obviously it was a total buy-out, much like The Hurt Locker did to Avatar last year and what TSN is doing this year.
I do have to say though, it still remains a surprise that it beat Toy Story 3, which seems to be the animated Oscar darling this season.
I agree that Dragon had ultimately better graphics. I was surprised at how updated TS3 looked, but it wasn’t nearly as realistic as HtTYD looked. I won’t say either movie is better, because that’s not up to me to decide. And no matter which one I think is better, someone will smack me in the face with something they read some where. So, anyway, I hope HtTYD wins, but not likely. I’ll take what I can get.
I got the DVD a day after it came out. I got TS3 as my primary Christmas present from my mom. They’re both great. I mean, asking me if I connected more with Hiccup or Woody is asking me to choose between pizza and chocolate milk. I can’t do it!! I’d go nuts without either.
Not quite sure if that’s the reason, because it’s a sequel and people are unfair. I think they voted for which one they liked best, and in general TS3 is liked more. It’s not that they’re unfair and out to ruin HTTYD. They just have different opinions then you.
agree, but the most important statement is not that TS3 is a sequel, is that TS3 has delivered a LEGACY in the film industry, and it has concluded in the best possible way, I hope other live action and animated films could conclude as good as the toy story franquise did
I completely agree. Besides, it’s not cool to say the film you prefer is better just because it’s your favorite. I don’t care what the Oscars say, there’s always a debate.
