How to Train Your Dragon

From the HTTYD Facebook page! Congratulations on the Golden Globes Nom, and all the best, Hiccup and Toothless!

Aw, that’s just precious. <3

I love it! They deserve the nomination, but there’s a different movie I’m hoping will win…

That picture makes me so happy. <3 Do you think they would allow me to wear it as a signature here after this one?

You know, this talk made me think that HTTYD had been nominated in a real category. Did anyone honestly expect it to not get a nomination for Best Animated Film? Of course, the award is as good as in the bag for TS3. Chris Sanders and Dean Deblois must currently be wishing that Dreamworks had waited another year to release their film. I doubt that Cars 2 will compare favourably to HTTYD, but TS3 is just beyond even the mighty dragon.

I’m sure they would! They wouldn’t mind you advertising their achievements!

I personally and respectfully disagree nfg. While both films were one of the few that year which made me care for the characters (not to mention made me forget for a time that as a family film, the main characters should make it out okay), Dragons is actually superior to TS3 to me. A part of this comes from the fact that as a sequel it actually brought things to a level playing field in my view (while we knew the characters more by this stage, it was the weaker film of the TS trilogy for me), in fact TS3 simply was showing what actually happened regarding a subject already dealt with emotionally in the 2nd (the fact Andy would eventually grow out of his toys).

TS3 is far from a terrible film and overall I liked it, but for me, Dragons brought us a whole new world with great characters in Hiccup, Toothless and Stoic and in more relateable situations despite involving Vikings and dragons and had a great message to boot. TS3 was more wacky fun times dealing with a subject they’d actually already discussed in their 2nd movie. It was nice to see but… yeah.

Plus, KFP beat WALL-E did it not? I’ll admit I disagreed with THAT decision, but if Dragons beats TS3, I think they will be correct in making such a decision.

(But, this is my personal opinion… maybe TS3 will win. But it would be like the KFP victory in KFP vs WALL-E to me- hardly a bad film winning it, I liked it, but I’d think their competitor was far more deserving of it.)

MG, you’re absolutely right. Besides, even apart from the part that HtTYD deserves it more than TS3, PIXAR has a 3-year winning streak. Doesn’t DW deserve a decent one year win? Please? :frowning:

I don’t think Dreamworks should get an Oscar just because Pixar has had a winning streak. Dreamworks should get an Oscar if it’s movie was better than Pixar. The problem with that is it’s based on opinion. This isn’t a Socialist Award where we spread the wealth of the Oscar.

The Oscar should go to whoever has the better movie (and in this case, Academy Members decide on that)

I believe, as an animated feature in general, How To Train Your Dragon performed better than TS3.

Exactly. I’m really disappointed and depressed with the prospect of PIXAR getting #4 in with TS3.

A comparison of TS3 and HTTYD would probably be better placed in a separate topic in the Toy Story forum, which I imagine gets more traffic, and thus, we can get more opinions. Suffice to say, I think TS3 is the superior film, primarily because it ripped out my heart, stomped on it, healed it, placed it back in, ripped it out again, stomped it again, and then managed to heal it and place it back in just in time for the end (there may be another cycle in there), which HTTYD didn’t do (it only ripped out my heart and kicked it around a bit, which is still enough for me to love the movie).

My main argument, however, is that TS3 will win the Best Animated Feature Oscar, which is by no means indicative of actual quality. I see a few main reasons for this:

  1. It’s Pixar. The Academy likes Pixar. A lot. The only two films to beat Pixar films for Best Animated Picture are Shrek (which was simply a phenomenon that changed the entire landscape of animated films… in a rather unfortunate way) and Happy Feet (which was up against Cars, which is widely regarded as Pixar’s worst film - it’s the only one to have less than 90% on Rotten Tomatoes).

  2. The Return of the King factor. Basically, TS3 is, like RotK, the last film in an excellent trilogy that has been passed over for real Oscars. That’s more than enough clout to get the Best Animated Feature Oscar, probably enough to get a Best Picture nomination, and I have a smidgen of hope that it just might be enough to get it a Best Picture win.

  3. It’s a much darker and more serious film (in spite of the wacky characters - it’s the contrast that provides much of the appeal for me) than HTTYD, and dark seems to suit the Aacademy’s preferences.

  4. If it is the only animated film to get nominated for Best Picture (a legitimate possibility), then it will get the Best Animated Feature Oscar. The Academy will rig the latter if necessary, because any other result would reveal that category to be the farce that many of us already see it as.

I agree that what Shrek did to modern animation is terrible. It worked for the first Shrek, but why did everyone else follow?

nintendofreakgcn, as much a fan I am of Dragons over TS3, you have made very valid points, and I totally agree with you that your prediction of the Academy may be accurate. If there’s one thing I’ve learnt from these old codgers, it’s that they are very predictable.

That statement is pure gold. When will the Academy pull their head out of the sand? :stuck_out_tongue:

I would be happy for Pixar and TS3 sure would deserve such an award, if it weren’t for HTTYD.

But I guess that’s a matter of taste. I love animals and funny creatures (especiallty dragons) and I have a thing for Fantasy/Medieval scenarios… Needless to say that I absolutely adored HTTYD to bits! :stuck_out_tongue:

Same here Czarine. It’s partially the reason I decided to look into Norse mythology first out of all the others I could have picked to look into more recently- even though it didn’t go into it in too much depth in the movie.

Apparently Vikings were people who expected hardship to happen- and to bear it with a smile. It wasn’t something to ‘angst’ over but instead to overcome and to laugh in the face of death. However the movie did show how important reputation was to them- Vikings while they believed in an afterlife didn’t believe in an eternal one at all- the only thing which could maybe last forever was the reputation or name for yourself you left here. Also Vikings weren’t completely blood thirsty- they also cared for their people as well such as the infirm etc. While they were indeed ruthless in certain cases they were more than just the ‘bloodthirsty heathens’ they have usually been painted as by some.

It’s partly why in my own stories, I kind of want to borrow their god Loki . One of my characters, well she does tend to try to bear such things with a smile and he makes an offhand comment about that (despite her other friends LOOKING more like they have Viking blood compared to her), half mocking it though really as well himself however.

Being an Internet addict I come across things a lot quicker than most. But for those who don’t live on the Internet (you lucky souls) I’m here to hook you up.

Dreamworks Animation has cut together a music video for Sticks & Stones featuring memorable scenes from the film. Enjoy.

That’s very cute aerostarmonk! Thanks for posting it.

This year I made a list of my top 5 animated films of 2010. How to Train Your Dragon falls at the number 3 spot. I really enjoyed it, I love Toothless! The movie is very quoteable and is overall beautiful.

I have yet to see Tangled or MegaMind, but I’m very ipressed with this year’s animation. This movie, Despicable Me, and TS3 all made me cry, and are all 3 awesome. I really hope this one gets Best Animated feature, though knowing how things go, that’s highly unlikely. :unamused:

At last, Dreamworks has made the official version of what fans have been doing all along - a FMV! :stuck_out_tongue: Pity it isn’t cut with the footage of the singers like what they did for Cars, LOTG, and any Disney movie for the 90s.

Still, great editing. I would be so glad if they played something like this at the Globes or Oscars.

Thanks for the update, aerostarmonk!
