Even Though I do like Monsters Inc more, Shrek one. Let’s be fair here guy’s, Pixar has won 6 awards for The Academy for Best Pictures, Dreamworks has 2. The other 2 are Spirited Away from Studio Ghibli and Happy Feet from Warner Bros, that movie that beat Cars. Becides, Pixar has got 2 nomination for Best Picture, Dreamworks has none, Let Dreamworks have some bragging rights too. As for Cars 2 vs Kung Fu Panda 2 vs Happy Feet 2, Im going for Cars 2, But King Fu Panda 2 has a chance as well as Happy Feet 2.
^But it’s about who deserves the award, not even distribution. I seriously do not believe Shrek got best score in 2001. I could list 10 2001 movies that deserved it more.
I agree with this statement, the awards aren’t socialist. It’s not like we’re suppose to be spreading the wealth of the awards. I personally think that Monsters, Inc was better than Shrek. But I guess the Academy voters felt differently.
I guess the score itself was okay, but (most) of the songs were very annoying.
I’m pretty sure the plan is to release Cars 2 and have it win the Oscar to make up for the original Cars.
And then to release Monsters U and have it win the Oscar to make up for Monsters, Inc.
And then to release Brave 2 and have it win the Oscar to make up for Brave (which will have lost to Monsters U).
And then to release Bug’s Life 2 and have it win the Oscar to make up for the original Bug’s Life.
Pixar sequels will rule the Oscar for years to come. No scrap that, Pixar sequels will rule the world for years to come. Sequels FTW!!!

I don’t wanna see that. That would mean Pixar cares more about awards and money then there fans. We don’t even know if Brave will do well. I would lose respect for Pixar if they kept making sequals like Dreamworks and Disney. They do well cause they always have diffirent movies.

Shrek was a somewhat good film that set a very low bar for future animated comedies, and little more than that.
Monsters, Inc. was a funny, sweet and very creative movie, that also was amazing on the technical level. Still one of my Pixar’s favorites.
I agree–Shrek set the low bar for animated comedies: shallow parody and franchise movies.
Wow, heh, I can see I’m going to be really really in the minority in this one, as I actually voted for Shrek. Don’t get me wrong, Monsters Inc is a truly amazing film, definitely one of if not the most hilarious PIXAR film ever made, and I absolutely agree that being within it’s own self contained film (rather than evolving into a cash cow franchise like Shrek) definitely made the film age better. But I do admit that I actually enjoyed Shrek more than MI when it came out. Keep in mind that this was during the 2000s, where really the only animated films kids my age were aware of were Disney and PIXAR, and for me personally Monsters Inc was sort of a let down when I first saw it (Yes, I know “Boo, Hiss!”). It’s just that watching the trailers, and seeing that both Billy Crystal AND John Goodman were going to be in it, I was really expecting a straight up comedy film and I remember being slightly disappointed a large portion was spent on the child and not the monsters themselves. For me, I remember I would’ve just been content with simply seeing the monsters at work and having the whole film focus on that, rather than the standard “Rescue and Return” plotline. Plus, at the time, like Sulley I too gagged at Mike and Celia’s relationship.
For me, the first and second Shrek films, for me, were actually a very refreshing feel at the time. I enjoyed Shrek because of the complete non conformity it presented in contrast to the “feel good” nature of Disney and PIXAR and especially how completely contemporary the film was at the time. In a sense, the first Shrek for me really represented the dramatic turn in animated features. Shrek 2 was better too, with a much less emphasis on those annoying fart jokes and more character depth and inventive characters and plotline. But I do agree that by the time the third and the fourth films came out, this formula had become as contrived as the standard “Dreamworks Smile” and they had lost whatever charm or appeal the first two films had.
Keep in mind, I saw both movies when they came out when I was like 10. Looking back now, especially factoring in how dry and stale the Shrek Series has become, Monsters definitely aged much much better and the characters are still much more endearing. Monsters Inc has definitely grown on me more than Shrek has, but at the time of the 2001 Academy Awards, I probably would’ve said Shrek was the superior film.

This completely sums up my feelings–especially after seeing MI with subtitles yesterday and finding it more hilarious than Shrek, especially in light of the franchise milking of it. My tiny brain at the time would have picked Shrek too for much of the same reasons everyone has here: it was good, solid, funny entertainment that had a donkey voiced by Earl Murray–I mean, Eddie Murphy. My grown up brain would have seen the future and told it to beg my tiny brain to see MI instead.
I honestly thought that Shrek was overrated. The story was a typical guy rescues princess with strange music video parodies in between. The soundtrack on Monster Inc was way better not to mention the story.
That does make it sound like they were tired of giving it to Disney and thought they would give it to someone else if someone else happened to come out with a good animated movie and Shrek was a good movie, not going to deny…but of course I liked Monsters Inc. better. Some of the Shrek sequels that came out later on though were really not very good at all. x_x
Since watching Shrek 4, I can definitely say that Monsters Inc has aged far better than it’s counterpart. I guess only time will tell if Monsters University, though, can uphold itself against the amazingness that is Shrek 2 [*]
Also, in this discussion I’m surprised no one else mentioned the other contender Jimmy Neutron Boy Genius. I mean, I guess I’m not surprised it lost to Shrek either, but at the time I thought it was a way more creative film.
I never saw Shrek 4 but I didn’t like the 3rd one very much and only heard bad things about the 4th one so I never saw it. I just felt like it started to go downhill to the point that I didn’t really want to watch it anymore.
I bet the new Monsters Inc. movie that’s due to come out in 2013 will be better.
