I got asked for proof of age when buying the 10th anniversary edition of Toy Story yesterday at sainsburys…, thats a supermarket in the UK, i’m not sure if they have them anywhere else in the world
The conversation went a little like this:
Shopworker: do you have any proof of age?
Me: Its a PG
Shopworker: We run an over 25 policy in this store, you look under 25 so i need to see some ID
Me: You don’t have to be a certain age to buy a PG so the fact that i am alive should be proof enough that I am old enough
Shopworker:… Just let me see the ID
Has anyone else experienced anything this rediculous, I’m 20 and i have a beard so i don’t exactly look young, i don’t normally get asked for ID when i’m buying alcohol so for a pg film i couldn’t believe it
Oh my goodness?! That is so silly! Sainsbury’s, what was up with you that day! Heh, which makes me very more happy that I purchase most of my DVDs through online shopping (not me personally, but my mother does anyway). I have a fear of going up to some shopping tills sometimes although, I remember at one time, somebody thought I was 18.
I saw that little advert in the window of Sainsbury’s yesterday when I went there! I had no idea that they were quite so petty. But you know toy story, it’s very capable of corrupting young minds
I thought it was quite ridiculous though, yet again the UK continues to get small liberties taken away day by day. Now we can’t even buy Pixar movies without some form of identification!
I’m 21, myself. If i would have received that back and forth in the supermarket when trying to buy the DVD, they would never see me return again. Although to me this just sounds like another employee on whatever small power trip they can get.
yeah i think the employee must of been having a bad day, normally i would be stubborn enough to walk out and never return but Toy Story for £5 was too good to pass up
Actually BBFC guidelines for a PG movie is a child under the age of 7 is not be be admitted to the showing for the movie/purchase the material without the attendance of an adult.
And before someone says… U in the UK… does not mean Universal… It means Available to all above the Age of 5: FACT!
These Challenges are for the security of the staff… I used to work for a games retailer… and in a bar… Staff don’t know who or what is out there and surrounding you at the time of purchase and with a Criminal Record and a hefty fine.
I dare say you would do the exact same thing if you were in their position.
The member of staff is doing right by the store, and for their protection… You May be 20 and look over 20… but you are not 25. Hence the request for ID. Its for their security. Trust me… I’ve had worse conversations over 15 rated titles and 18s when 26 year olds have requested for them. Staff are trained “Its a PG get ID.”
Can retailers be fined for selling a game/movie to someone “underage”? That’s absurdly insane. Especially PG. P Friggin G! Toy Story! TO A GUY WITH A BEARD! C’MON!
Utah tried passing a similar law but it was pretty quickly struck down as unconstitutional. The USA may torture people, but at least we haven’t gotten that far gone yet. The only way a retailer could be fined is if they were to sell a minor pornography.
its not the retailer who get punished… its you… if you sell a restricted game to a person whom the game/movie is Classified as not suitable you can say hello to Fines, Criminal Convictions and in most cases your job.
The job of the retailer is to advertise produce and train staff… its up to the staff to apply training. I don’t know how many times I had to both Watch and Sign Video Recording Act 1984 documentation saying I have received the training, and the refresher… but I was becoming quite able to act out the footage on the DVD.
Haha, that is pretty funny. It happens a surprising amount around here, and I’m sure some of the people that work in places like Sainsbury’s or Tesco are just having a laugh. A friend of mine got ID’d when she was buying a Mars Bar in Tesco. Apparently chocolate bars now have age restrictions.
I worked in a supermarket for 3 years and got given all the training, i am aware of the fines that can be given but there is a time when common sense is needed and this was one of them. If it had been for a film with an 18 certificate i would of understood, but pg? No matter what fines can be given if you sell a PG to someone under the age of 7, i do not look 7 and unless i suddenly do a benjamin button i never will look 7
Toy Story is rated pg in the UK? Lol what, Toy Story needs parental guidance now?
(Unless PG stands for something else in the UK. reads a few posts up o0o0o I see…)
Anyway that’s weird. I would have been like “Uhhh… why do I need an ID to buy a “kids” movie?”. Something similar (sort of), happened to me the other week. My boyfriend and I went out to see final destination… I was expecting them to ask us for ID because we get asked for it everywhere else. So I was waiting for the ticket person to say “ID please?”, but he never did. Maybe it’s finally sinking into their heads that we’re not teenagers.
Sumthing like that happend to me. But it was with a music CD, and the clerk was an older gentleman. My story is a bit more reasonable because its a music CD. But they carded you for a Toy Story movie? dang. makes for a pretty funny story tho’
