Here’s a silly observation I’ve
made about the characters in The Incredibles that doesn’t make sense to me.
How come the ears on everyone
in The Incredibles don’t actually have openings? Look at Jack-Jack’s
ears:

They only show a hint of the inside of his ears, but for the most part, they’re very
solid.
Could this be a detail that was overlooked during production or just part of the unique design of
TI?

I think it was just a part of the stylization of The
Incredibles. On the DVD it’s mentioned that Brad Bird didn’t want super-realism on the characters, just enough
to make them believable. Besides, considering all the work that goes into the design process, I doubt something
like that could be overlooked.
By the way, I just noticed he doesn’t appear to have nostrils either!

Yeah, I think that goes past the amount
of realism he wanted. I know artists often don’t draw those details because it stands out if your drawing is
mostly simplistic. I think it would be freaky if they had serious detail for their ears… Plus it’s a hard area
to shade… sooo… that may be another reason.
Yeah. I’m sure Brad knew
what he was doing, and Pixar is not one to overlook details.
Nevertheless, it bothers me, along with the
missing nostrils. Thanks for pointing that out, SB.
You have to admit though…It would be hard to
animate anyone picking their nose or using a Q-tip!

Nor would
anyone really want to see it, I don’t think.
I agree. If anyone wants to see people being hygenic and stuff, go watch those Survivor-like
Reality shows. Q-Tips & Bathrooms aren’t the stuff of dramas!
What’s
funny is, on Big Brother (in the US; I don’t know what it’s like in the UK), for $40 you can have the ability
to watch the live feeds 24/7, including all the stuff that won’t (or can’t) be shown on tv… meaning that
people pay good money to see other people “being hygenic and stuff.”
Wow. This topic is going in a direction that I never foresaw it
going in. LOL

Yeah, like everyone has been saying, it’s
just part of the whole ‘look’. I kind of like it, myself.
I just looked at the DVD cover, and J-J is
the only one to be nostril-less. Maybe it could just be that his nose was too small to make it look good…
although that’s just a stab in the dark.
If any of us ever get to meet Brad, oh, the questions we could
ask him! (He’d probably think the lot of us were rabid psycho fans, but whatever.
)
The human characters weren’t animated to the extreme detail. I think they did that on
purpse.

As Brad has said in the DvD extra’s The Chracters on TI
had a hint of ‘clay puppet’ feeling on them, to give the movie its own looks and own feeling. The ears are
perhaps one of the things they decided to go easy on for many reasons.
Maing a good looking 3d ear is
difficult, there are a lot of bumps and holes and such where a lot of work has to go into animating the light ad
shadows, so I guess they decided to do it their own way to make it easier and to give a own touch to the whole
movie.
I swear I read in an interview from one of the people at
Pixar that the design of the Incredibles’ ears is deliberately not realistic because they’re not making human
characters look realistic but behave realistic.
I think it’s amazing that the folks at Pixar can make
such a simple ear-design and still look and feel incredibly awesome.
Yeah, we have that here too, but it’s on a different channel and it’s
free. Most boring rubbish to be shown on TV ever, if you ask me.
Yeah, the whole ear/nostril thing is
just part of the style. I guess it’s noticeable at first, but when you get into the film, it just fits.
