I thought it’d be a nice idea to make this a thread for people to write about Wall-E being shown outside North America. Markjochems had a nice post about the Dutch premiere… but the movie is now starting to appear in more and more countries.
So how about making this the “International Wall-E” thread?
If you live outside the US/Canada, please feel free to write about how the movie was shown in your country. Such things as: was a dub available for children (if your native language is not English) or just subtitled? Did you notice any on-screen signs changed to your local language or customs (or were all still in English?) When the robots “speak” is it dubbed or translated as well? What is the marketing like? How were the crowds? The local reviews? Thoughts of you and your friends who saw it? These are just ideas… feel free to write on what you like. How was the movie treated where you live…
Marketing was slow to begin, but has finally really kicked in over the past week. The cinema wasn’t busy when I went, but that’s probably because of the time of day of the showing. Local reviews have been pretty good- the general consensus is that it’s a very, VERY good film in the first half an hour, but deteriorates a little in the second half. It’s got 4 stars in the two newspapers I read, the Daily Mail and the Independent, and everyone generally seems pretty keen on it.
Nice idea! I will post here once the marketing machine starts up here, and when I’ve seen the movie. There won’t be that much of a difference, I bet.
The international trailer (the one with the words in my signature), at the end of it, it says “COMING TO CINEMAS” or something like that, instead of “JUNE 27.” I guess they make two versions of that trailer: a local version, and an English international version for Australia/UK/New Zealand etc so they didn’t have to change the release date for each market. Probably a good idea since the Australian date was changed very last minute, same as last year.
my parents went to france recently on honeymoon and saw a wall-e advertisement and took a picture for me
if i find the camera, ill show the picture…i believe it comes out on july 30th for them if i remember correctly
My local Woolworths hardly has anything on Wall-e, which is sad
Except from one or two modles and a few soft toys, which you can only get if you pre-order the film…already
Tescos is quite good too and i got a lot of things from there
I saw the movie for the third time today and paid extra attention to this. In the Dutch speaking region of Belgium the original version contains no translations whatsoever, the temperature inside the Axiom is still 72° Fahrenheit even though in Europe we use the Celsius temperature scale. I now also believe that the other showings of the original version I saw in the French speaking region of Belgium and in Amsterdam (The Netherlands) we’re exactly the same. This was not the case with Ratatouille where Gusteau’s will was written in french in Belgium and in english in The Netherlands.
I can’t comment on the synchronized versions that are playing since I didn’t see any of those.
its brilliant that we have wall.e here in the uk now i love the film and so do my friends who have seen it.its growing more popularity day by day both with us adults and also the kids.I hear it being talked about on a daily basis here now and all very positive about the film.
merchandise wise our local tesco has been brilliant and has had lots of merchandise from collectable figures to bedding and a remote controled u command walle,toymaster local toy store has had one or two bits in and so has argos it was disapointing these did not have more merchandise,
going to check out what our local disney store has in next
i think wall.e is a massive hit over here in the uk and hope it wins lots of awards its brilliant

Interesting, thanks for checking it out when you saw it again. Yes, for Ratatouille the signage was sometimes changed. I guess there’s not enough on-screen sinage to bother with Wall-E…
72f here, too. I’m not surprised, though, since we end up getting the used-up US reels, another reason why our release date is delayed, probably. It also means we get black splotches from time to time. I guess that adults would understand that it was the US system, since we are used to dealing with both formats, generally. Either that or the heat was turned up aboard the Axiom. Heheh.

As for the 72F Degrees thing, it’s a really minor point I know, but I always like to see if things like that are changed. I guess for Ratatouille there was so much on-screen information (in the form of newspapers, letters, etc) that things got changed depending on where you live, but for Wall-E, on-screen text didn’t play so big a part so they just left it as is…
Here in Germany the 72°F was kept as well (though it was changed in the dialogue), as were the “caution” displays, but many of the other displays and billboards were translated.
Most of the marketing trailers for the film were probably similar to those in the US; I’m not really observant when it comes to these things.
Nevertheless, there was the usual WALL-E marketing bench with the heart-shaped icon in the center and the cut-out, life-sized figurine. The TV spots seemed similar to those I viewed on the web and naturally, the same goes for the promotional trailer played throughout the advertisement sections shown before the playing of each film.
I didn’t really manage to catch the black and white version teaser, though - the one where Stanton described their first discussion of WALL-E - not in the theaters anyway, less could be said for the TV.
Many Singaporeans were and still are big fans of Pixar productions, so it’s not uncommon to even find a teenager or two talking about one of the Pixar movies by the popcorn stand, especially the latest one.
Since English is our national language, I would expect WALL-E to, naturally, be kept in the original format. I’m not sure about the temperature difference, but I’m sure they would have no reason to alter that with the lack of requirements in changing the language. As I stated, not a very sharp observer.
Nevertheless, despite what little differences it has with that shown in the US, I know that the film was equally entertaining.
