Japanese Wall-E Page

Though Wall-E won’t be out in Japan until December, Disney Japan already has a page up for it, with two initial trailers:
disney.co.jp/movies/wall-e/index.html

The trailers are the same ones that have been in English. The first one (#1, talking about how the story was first thought up) is in the original English and subtitled in Japanese. The 2nd trailer (labelled “NEW”) is the longer, international trailer, with the narration now dubbed in Japanese (it’s pretty much just a translation of what’s said in the English original). At the end, it shows it’s coming out this winter (December). The “voices” for Wall-E and Eve sound the same.

This brings up an interesting point to ponder, not just for the Japanese release, but for the other non-English releases as well. In Japan anyway, there are always two ways to see the Pixar movies in theatres, either with the orginal soundtrack (with Japanese subtitles), or for the kids, dubbed into Japanese. Well, for the parts that are just the sounds of the robots, one would think since they’re just “sounds” it wouldn’t need to be translated – but a lot of times certain sounds might not make sense or have meaning to viewers with different cultures or languages. Thus it’ll be interesting to see if the dubbed verisons of the film “dub” the robot “dialogue” or not…

You can see a non-English version of the international trailer on YouTube.

There was this segment where WALL-E is watching up to the sky, a spaceship is approaching and he says “EVA”, right? Now, in this version he doesn’t say “EVA”, instead he says something like “EVÖ” or “EVOE” which sounds terrible.

I’m very afraid that they might change too much of the voices for my liking. TV-Spot 2 with the little robot making the “gogogo”-sound: how do you think that is translated?

I bet most of the international versions will suck. Those “dubbing companies” can’t do the same quality sound effects like Ben Burtt. :-/

Ooh, I hadn’t seen the international trailer before! The part when [spoil]WALL-E is stretching out to the deactivated EVE (or is it really?)[/spoil] just totally pulled at my little heart.

Japan is gonna love this one. Robots dude. Robot. Japan loves robots.
