Just thought I would let guys know....

A guy with a black eye…

I mean films in general mate. And Lee Unkrich is coming to my town’s film festival to show off TS3 and I’ve got tickets!

Well, they deny the artists who make the work money for it. I admit to using YouTube to watch a movie, but most YouTube movies have been out for years so they’ve had a chance to make their money. Plus, if a company wants to take it down, they easily can. And they do.

Still, it annoys ME when people act like its their God given right to watch movies illegally, usually with arguments like “Those movie companies make too much money already!” (Maybe that’s because they get off their butts and make products that people want to buy. That’s the way capitalism works, my friend) “Its sharing!” (I believe the word it “stealing.”) and “I can’t afford it otherwise!” (Then don’t buy it. If it was food, then that’s one thing. But this is a luxury item you don’t need, and when you can’t afford a luxury item, you don’t get it. Can’t afford an Ipod? That doesn’t give you the right to steal one.) Sorry dude, but buying bootlegs without the intention of buying the real thing IS stealing. Good for you to buy the real thing.

And the reason those TV shows have those messages? When people steal their companies material, whose losing the money?

Ever record a tv show/movie on VHS for a friend? Technically your breaking the law.
sometimes its not so clear cut morally is all I’m saying.

I agree with Kyle. Copyright laws are so sketchy nowadays that pretty much any kind of viewing or sharing is “illegal” by their standards.

I think xkcd puts it best:

Besides, as long as you see Toy Story 3 in theaters or buy the dvd/blu-ray it won’t make a difference whether you download or watch a horrible bootlegged version.

agreed

I think you guys are completely missing my point. I’m not saying that everyone who “pirates” is automatically a criminal. What I’m saying is that knowingly buying ONLY bootleg copies of movies without paying the makers anything for their trouble is, in fact, STEALING media, no matter which way you slice it. No money is ever given to the creator for the material they made. That’s not fair or right, is it? Not everything is about the consumer and their needs. If it was, then heck, free whatever-y’all-want!

And for that little cartoon there, you CAN, in fact, BUY easy to convert music files. Buy songs off Amazon. MP3, go to a conversion site. You’ve paid the maker, you get the files. No harm done. It may be technically illegal, but that’s not what I’m talking about. And all my songs on ITunes can be converted to MP3, by the way. I’ve never had trouble.

If you post a song that you bought on ITunes on YouTube, that is one thing. You may be “sharing,” and I’m fine with that, since you did pay the makers. Plus, its practically free advertising, since I can say myself that 90% of the songs I buy I first heard on YouTube. HOWEVER, if you go to music sharing sites, never actually BUY any music, and download everything, that is pretty darn morally gray.

And for your point, Kyle, that has nothing to do with what I’m talking about. Taping a video off TV for a friend is different because the distributor has actually chosen to allow people to see that material for free. Now, if your copying from a DVD or tape, then yes, that is stealing, and no, I don’t do that.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that as long as money gets to the creator and distributor for their goods, then there is nothing wrong. But if there is no compensation going to them, that is indeed wrong, stealing, and they have the right to complain or take legal action.

Isn’t that exactly what I said?

I download craploads of stuff, but certain things i will not, Example; Toy Story 3 isn’t out in the UK yet, but i’m not going to download it because I love the franchise and want to view it on the big screen.

Please watch your language and link images that contain swear words. TDIT

sigh You are still missing my point.

(Excuse my horrible spelling)

Here’s how capitalist economy is SUPPOSED to work.

But when people copy files, it works like this:

More people get to use it, but the creator still gets the same amount of money.

Call it whatever you want, file sharing is still taking money from someone. That song may not be a physical item, but it is still a good. The people who wrote, sang, and distributed that song are counting on people buying the song in order to get the paycheck they deserve. When you don’t buy it, they don’t, yet YOU still get the benefits. Its not all about you.

What I’m saying is that I HATE it when people get all huffy when they can’t get a torrent of a buyable game, or a scanlation of a manga, or whatever, like they have the right to not pay for media they get!

I better stop now or I’m really gonna get something that rhymes with witchy…darn my bad debate habits. DX

Here’s my personal take on copyright infringement…

If you’ve watched the movie at least once in theatres, it is fine to watch a bootleg copy until the DVD comes out. Then when it does, you go and buy it, to support the home-entertainment industry (and the studio twice).

Sometimes, you have to use bootleg copies, like when you’re making a fan video or trailer for parody or informational purposes, and the stupid DVD you have has ‘nanny locks’ like DRM on it. As for the Digital Copies that comes with newer DVDs, I have not purchased those before, but from what I’ve read, you are not able to copy it to multiple computers or more than once (obviously to discourage piracy again).

If your local retailers refuse to stock the films you want, or if the title is too obscure or its copyright has expired, or if a corporation (like Disney/Pixar) makes the dumb decision to have soundtracks on iTunes and not sell them as physical copies, you have the right to download it if it is available illegally. You should not deprive yourself if distribution channels refuse to cooperate and make the media you want available for you to support the original owners.

BUT if the movie/soundtrack/etc. is in stores, or you have access to a retail outlet within considerable means (like say, within fifty kilometres of your home, or if you have credit card to purchase things online), you should support the creators of your content on the principle of rewarding them for the hard work they’ve done producing your media.

This is my ‘internal compass’ opinion on this controversial issue. Feel free to debate or chastise me if you disagree.

I won’t argue if piracy is morally wrong or right. But what’s beyond me is how any Toy Story fan would like to see the movie in ANY quality that’s not the one it was meant to be seen.

At LEAST wait until the pirate copies are almost as good as the original, with the menu, and everything.

I agree Spirit. My approach is I always watch movies, any movie really, in cinemas for the first time… if possible. If not, on rental DVD.

This ‘theatres-first’ policy is an iron-clad rule for me with regards to Pixar movies, since Cars. No matter how unbearably long the Australian release date. Giving in to bootlegs before the theatrical release is unthinkable for me.

Pretty much exactly how I feel. But its beyond me why anyone would rather a physical copy of music over a much easier to use computer file that you can make your own CD off of. Still, you don’t have to use ITunes. You can get the exact same thing (Cheaper, too!) off Amazon.com. No, better, 'cause its MP3! ^^

Some folks are just traditionalists… like vinyl record owners. I personally prefer Vinyls > MP3 > CD

And I don’t have a credit card, and I don’t feel comfortable using my old folks’ cos’ it ain’t my money. But anyway, I don’t like how Apple likes to lock you into using a specific software of format… I’m an open-source advocate.

Well, I just got the DVD yesterday… All the signs and stuff are in russian, at some parts some of the characters heads are cut off, you can hear the audience laughing, and from the part [spoil]where Woody gets the glider and flies off the roof[/spoil] to the part where [spoil]Bonnie finds him and takes him home,[/spoil] it freezes contiously. I think there’s more flaws but I fell asleep watching it in the car yesterday, so I’ll have to check again later. But, the sound is really clear (loud).

Isn’t the Russian copy on Youtube? The signs amd other words were diffrent but they talked in english. Some parts were taken away from Youtube for copyright. I wanted to see the part when Woody ia taken about toys getting sold, but it was gone.

I could never see a movie I’m fan of in that quality. I prefer the long wait until the actual DVD gets out (and go to the cinema over and over while it’s still there).
